    Devo 128: A Sad Verse

The sermon centers on the profound responsibility of dedicating children to God from conception, emphasizing that each life is purposefully designed by God before birth, as illustrated by Samson's divine calling as a Nazirite. It highlights the tragic consequence of Samson's failure to maintain his spiritual dedication, resulting in the loss of God's presence, physical blindness, and spiritual darkness—serving as a sobering reminder that divine power is forfeited through unrepentant sin. The message calls believers to genuine repentance, not merely regret, but a transformative change of mind and behavior rooted in Scripture and the Holy Spirit's guidance. It warns that small, seemingly insignificant choices can erode one's spiritual vitality, likening them to 'little foxes' that destroy the vine. Ultimately, the sermon offers hope: God promises restoration, renewal, and the replacement of spiritual loss with beauty, provided one surrenders all to Him.

Working through Acts 5:29, Proverbs 29:25, and other passages, Dave considers the fear of man, the pressure to compromise, and the difference between conviction and stubbornness. He explains why Christian courage includes humility, gentleness, repentance, and wisdom about which disagreements require a firm response. Listeners are encouraged to practice faithfulness in everyday life and to look to Jesus Christ, whose finished work and resurrection give His people confidence when obedience becomes costly. The First Christian Martyr

The sermon examines the early opposition to Stephen, highlighting how his ministry of grace and power provoked a response rooted in the historical sins of Israel. By drawing parallels between the false witnesses against Stephen and the narrative of Ahab and Naboth in 1 Kings, the text illustrates the recurring pattern of religious leaders silencing God's prophets through deceit and violence. The charges of blasphemy against the temple and the law are contextualized through Old Testament prophecies, demonstrating that Stephen's teachings on the fulfillment of the Mosaic covenant in Christ were consistent with the Scriptures. The passage concludes with the supernatural composure of Stephen, whose angelic countenance testified to the presence of God amidst the hostile council, setting the stage for his defense.
