    Album of the week: Smile from Skeletons on Impossible Ark Records.Welcome to another round the world music adventure with a number of album launches, local gigs a plenty, a listener request, sacred music and an album of the week that comes from Skeletons, a made up band, an invention from the creative genius of Benedic Lamdin. On the subject of the band he says, "I kid you not, it doesn't exist, these musicians never stood in the studio together, they just passed through my house or left some scraps of sound behind after sessions...like a guy, pieced together and ready for the bonfire."     Album of the week: Ali and Toumani from Ali Farka Toure and Toumani Diabate on World Circuit.Welcome to your next round the world music adventure. For those of you who like your African Music with a deep and heavy funk groove and a touch of fuzz guitar you'll jump with joy at Strut's re-release of Afro-Rock Volume One - out of print since 2002 and credited with started the "craze" for record digging and retro releases from the motherland. Hear a track on this week's broadcast along with a cut from Ofege's album Try and Love and some seriously heavy rocked out fuzz guitars from Zambia in the 70's courtesy of Amanaz, who's re-release on the Shadoks label is "a hallucinogenic £32" from Honest Jons. We play a track from Amanaz today - see what you reckon.Our album of the week, in complete contrast is some of the most beautiful music I've heard so far this year, Ali and Toumani with three cuts from the album you'll hear anon the spot improvisation from Toumani, Ali with some deep Peul grooves and the extraordinary love and empathy these two musicians have for each other's music.A contender for album of the year.Starting with some Brit folk and tracks from the Imagined Village with a little known Ewan McColl composition and the marvellous Chumbawamba mocking the BNP's attempts to infiltrate the British Folk scene.     As the African Soul Rebels 2010 tour kicks off in the UK we join the rebellious spirit starting the broadcast with Gil Scot-Heron's The Revolution will not be televised from 1974 followed by the people's poet and veteran of the Soweto Uprising, Mzwakhe Mbule's Change is Pain from 1986. Two artists linked by their social commentary rooted in black freedom. Gil Scot Heron with the civil rights movement in the US and Mzwakhe Mbule with the struggle against apartheid in South Africa, two artists who would surely have influenced the first African Soul Rebels - Lesego Rampolokeng with the Kalahari Surfers Celebrating another rebel, Grammy Award winning Oumou Sangare calls for women to rise up and challenge the "big shot" men, her new approach to music and powerful lyrics Oumou joins TP Orchestre Polyrythmo to complete the line up for the African Soul Rebels tour.To fit in with mood of rebellion, our album of the week comes form Tamikrest a young Touareg band, hailed by Andy Morgan, ex manager of Tinariwen, "as the future of Touareg music".Finally we are pleased to broadcast the special feature package courtesy of Philip Jackson and Music Beyond Mainstream giving you background detail and more of a taster of this years African Soul Rebels Tour.     Welcome to your latest round the world music adventure. Please donate to the Disasters Emergency Committee there's a link on the front page of the website and to concentrate our thoughts we open the broadcast with two Haitian tracks. One from Les Shleu Shleu a sixties dance band from Haiti, the precursor to all the retro tropical funk that's being dug up and reissued right now. We follow that with a stunning track from one of the best albums from last year Ti Coco and Wanga Neges' Haiti Colibri.Our album of the week comes from The Hut People and extraordinary combo of Percussion and Piano Accordian. Ever since we saw them at Musicport two years ago we've been waiting in anticipation for their debut album and we haven't been disappointed. Hope you enjoy the three tracks that we've picked out for you.With two new releases from Toureg artists,Nabil Othmani and newcomers and young pretenders for the Tinirawen crown, Tamikrest both with their own approach to Tamasheq music and beyond.     GondwanaSound meets Los Desterrados

    Having recently been nominated in the 2009 Songlines Music Awards, Best Group category We headed down to their gig at Camden's Dingwalls to catch up with the London based group who are reworking the Sephardic songbook, drawing upon music from across North Africa, the Southern Mediterranean and into the Balkans and Turkey.     GondwanaSound with Ian McMillan and Luke Goss

    Joining me in the studio in January were two of the Ian McMillan Orchestra. Ian McMillan is well known as poet in residence for Barnsley FC and beat poet for Humberside police and a Radio 3 broadcaster. Luke Carver Goss plays accordian amongst other instruments, writes commissioned peices and plays in a number of bands including the much praised Tea Hodzic Trio. The idea was to talk about their tour and new album Sharp Stories but somehow it didn't quite work out like that. I blame the coffee! The duo are masters of improvisation and it turned out to be a session full of mischief including the special improvisation for GondwanaSound.Enjoy.Copyright GondwanaSound all rights reserved.     GondwanaSound tribute to Andy Palacio January 2008

    The "world" music community were shocked to hear that Andy Palacio had lost his fight for life and had died in his homeland of Belize on 19th January.Andy Palacio had the most extraordinary year in 2007 receiving nominations, awards and accolades for his music and for his ceaseless promotion of Garifuna culture and language. It made the news even more difficult to comprehend.This tribute was first broadcast on GondwanaSound / Sheffield Live! 93.2FM on 22nd January and whilst on air Jill received a bulletin from his record company to say that in an unprecedented move the BBC had bought forward the announcement that Andy Palacio had indeed won the best artist of the Americas category in the BBc Awards for World Music for 2008.This tribute is mixed with some of his music.Copyright - GondwanaSound, all rights reserved, please do not rebroadcast or make copies without prior consent.     GondwanaSound meets Cimai and Radulescu from Fanfare Ciocarlia January 2008

    I was delighted to meet with Cistica "Cimai" Trifan and Radulescu Lazar of the mighty Fanfare Ciocarlia, from Zece Prajini.
