    Isolated Christianity is Impossible

12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.--13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one bodyJews or Greeks, slaves or freeand all were made to drink of one Spirit.--14 For the body does not consist of one member but of many.--15 If the foot should say, Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body, that would not make it any less a part of the body.--16 And if the ear should say, Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body, that would not make it any less a part of the body.--17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell?--18 But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose.--19 If all were a single member, where would the body be?--20 As it is, there are many parts, yet one body.--21 The eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of you, nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.--22 On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable,--23 and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty,--24 which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it,--25 that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another.--26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.--27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.--28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues.--29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles?--30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?--31 But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way. The Structure of the Body (vv 12-14) The Diseases of the Body (vv 15-26) The Diversity of the Body (vv 27-31)

    Gospel Through Culture

22 So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious.--23 For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: To the unknown god. What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you.--24 The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man,--25 nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.--26 And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place,--27 that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us,--28 for In him we live and move and have our being; as even some of your own poets have said, For we are indeed his offspring.--29 Being then Gods offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man.--30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,--31 because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.--32 Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked. But others said, We will hear you again about this.--33 So Paul went out from their midst.--34 But some men joined him and believed, among whom also were Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris and others with them.

    The Resurrection Reshapes Our Future

1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.--2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.--3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.--4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.--5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.--6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming.--7 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them.--8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.--9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices--10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.--11 Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all.--12 Put on then, as Gods chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,--13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.--14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.--15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.--16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.--17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. We forgive because grace is greater than any wound

21 Then Peter came up and said to him, Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?--22 Jesus said to him, I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.--23 Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants.--24 When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.--25 And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made.--26 So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.--27 And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt.--28 But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, Pay what you owe.--29 So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, Have patience with me, and I will pay you.--30 He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt.--31 When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place.--32 Then his master summoned him and said to him, You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me.--33 And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?--34 And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt.--35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.
