    Splitting Fairways Episode 8: Golf’s Unwritten Rules

    Golf has plenty of official rules, but somehow, golfers have invented an entirely separate rulebook of things you’re just supposed to know. In Episode 08 of Splitting Fairways, Hawk and Tox take on Golf’s Dumbest Unwritten Rules and try to figure out where legitimate etiquette ends and pointless golf judgment begins. Hats indoors. Untucked shirts. Denim. Changing your shoes in the parking lot. Too many headcovers. 14-way bags. And, of course, the undisputed heavyweight champion of unnecessary golf arguments: iron covers. If none of these things affect another golfer’s round, why does anyone care? Ryan (Hawk) and Jeremy (Lord Tox) debate which traditions still have a place in the game, and which ones golfers need to stop taking so seriously. Then they head to the course to tackle the unwritten rules that might actually matter. Should honors on the tee give way to ready golf? Is talking to someone else’s ball harmless encouragement or an unforgivable offense? Can you call a putt before it drops? And do you really need to gently place the flagstick on the green? Not every unwritten rule deserves to disappear. Repairing pitch marks, raking bunkers, keeping pace, respecting another player’s concentration, and taking care of the course all make golf better for everyone.     Splitting Fairways Episode 7: Has Golf Equipment Peaked? 

    Golfers often say modern equipment is maxed out. New drivers aren’t really longer, annual releases are mostly marketing, and the gains are too small to matter.  Then many of those same golfers argue that equipment has become too powerful at the professional level. That contradiction drives the newest episode of Splitting Fairways.  Episode 7 asks whether golf equipment has actually peaked, or whether improvement has simply moved into areas that aren’t obvious on one perfect strike. Both Ryan and Jeremy agree that modern equipment is still improving. The disagreement is more about how golfers define “better.”  Maximum distance is only part of the picture. Modern drivers are increasingly designed to preserve ball speed, launch, spin and direction when impact moves away from center. Two drivers may perform similarly on a perfect strike and very differently across the golfer’s normal pattern.  The episode also looks at fitting. Today’s driver families offer multiple heads, adjustable hosels, movable weights and different center-of-gravity locations.     Splitting Fairways Episode 6: Golf’s Biggest Lie, “That’s Good.”

    Every golfer has heard the phrase, “That’s good.” It usually comes after a short putt stops just shy of the hole, and before anyone has a chance to tap it in. For most recreational golfers, it’s simply part of the game. But should it be? That question is at the heart of Episode 6 of Splitting Fairways, the THP podcast where Ryan “Hawk” and Jeremy “Lord Tox” tackle the conversations golfers have every day. This week, the discussion centers on one of golf’s oldest unwritten rules: the gimme. Ryan argues that conceded putts are a practical necessity, helping keep rounds moving and making recreational golf more enjoyable. Jeremy counters that golf has only one finish line, the bottom of the cup, and every conceded putt turns an actual score into an educated guess. Along the way, the conversation explores where gimmes came from, why every group seems to have its own definition of “inside the leather,” and whether routinely accepting short putts quietly inflates handicaps over time. We also examine why golfers who never seem to miss a two-footer during a casual round suddenly insist on putting everything out when money, trophies, or bragging rights are on the line.
