Miles Hull - Dark Horse Hospitality Group

Miles Hull - Dark Horse Hospitality Group

This week we speak with Miles Hull, who can be fairly regarded as an industry veteran in the hospitality space.

Formally trained in hotel management in Switzerland, Miles held a range of positions in hotels and a Canadian brewpub in the last 1990s before returning to Australia, where he we worked as Food & Beverage Manager for the Sydney Olympic Games Organising Committee.

His next role was as Head of Creative Development & Marketing : Founding General Manager - Hospitality for a little brewing start-up called Little Creatures, which I still regard as one of the most influential hospitality venues in the beer industry, and a venue that most brewpubs open today can trace their DNA back to.

He is currently General Manager of his own hospitality group in Perth, with three venues and a fourth - a brewpub - to open later this year.

As the brewing industry matures and changes, the quality and thoughtfulness of the hospitality that breweries offer is increasingly as important as the beer. That makes this very thoughtful and thought provoking chat with Miles a must listen for anyone running or thinking of opening a brewpub.

Grant Smith and Andrew Newton - Two Mates Brewing

Grant Smith and Andrew Newton - Two Mates Brewing

This week we meet Grant Smith and Andrew Newton, the founders of Two Mates Brewing in Lismore.

The brewery - built on the ambition of becoming the hub and meeting place for its local community, opened late last year after a fairly fraught and extended development process, not too dissimilar from many breweries in planning, and conversations about building a brewery are often a great insight for others planning their own and so could have been a good conversation all of its own.

This conversation has an added dimension though. Immediately welcomed by the locals, the brewery had barely found its rhythm when it was devastated by this year's floods.

So bad was the damage that it looked like the brewery may not reopen. But it has.

This is a conversation about hockey, mates, family, beer, community and also resilience...all the best things that we love about this industry.

I hope you enjoy it - and are as inspired by it - as I was.

Still Raising the Bar

The conversation and news coverage demonstrates quality journalism applied to a specific niche. This podcast explores the nature of the craft beer industry, without indulging in tasting notes on individual beers. An entertaining, deep (well sometimes) conversation, which I look forward to each week.

Just stumbled over this great podcast. As a resident of the Marrickville mile I really appreciate a bit of in-depth beer talk. Listening to you guys on loop as I brew my own porter this afternoon
