    Acts 5:1-16 || Life In Temple: AND Not OR

    You don’t love me” cried the child in the grocery cart. Mom had said “no” to candies the little one had grabbed from shelves. The interaction revealed a common belief in the parent-child relationship. And in our relationship to God. Either we get what we want OR moms don’t love us, OR God is judging us with an angry scowl.  Wise parents see through the faulty logic, and teach children the importance of the AND. We love you AND we discipline you for your good. Healthy Christians see through the faulty logic, too. "God is love” writes the Apostle John (I John 4:8) AND “he disciplines us for our good, so that we may share his holiness.” (Heb 12:10) Yet it’s easy to forget that being the temple of the Spirit has consequences. AND that God love us.

    Acts 4:1-22 | The Troubling Doctrine of the Resurrection

    When Pollsters ask non-Christian people what Christians believe, they get a wide variety of answers. They can be encouraging, or uncomfortable, for us to read. Christians are self-righteous. Christians are kind and loving. Christians believe that Jesus saves them from hell and is their ticket to heaven. Christians think they’re right and everyone else is wrong. When Pollsters ask Christian people what Christians believe, the predominant answer centers on the cross of Jesus. The cross is how we are saved from sin and obtain eternal life. Hard to argue with that, yet remarkably, of those surveyed—Christians and non-Christians alike—the resurrection of Jesus Messiah was seldom listed as central to our faith and life. It sure was in Jerusalem that day in Acts 4. In fact, talk about resurrection got Peter and John arrested. Let’s find out why.

    Acts 3 || Great Expectations

    Greetings, Eternal Church! It's my joyful opportunity to serve the gathering at 1650 O’Henry Lane this Sunday by bringing the Word of God to the people of God, so that we, by the Spirit of God, might look more like the Son of God for the Glory of God! This week, we will continue the journey through the book of Acts by considering Acts 3. With that, I’d like to ask you to prepare your hearts by reading through the chapter, and then consider the following questions before Sunday morning: What are my expectations for this Sunday’s worship service? What am I looking for?  What do I desperately need? Who am I hoping to see? There is much in this careful historical account of Luke that we could feast on, but in our survey this week, we will see this overarching purpose: We are without the power and piety to walk, but in Christ we find both, and are restored by His presence to a priesthood of praise in the already as we await the not yet! I couldn’t be more excited to unfold the truths of Acts 3 with each of you, and then see how our Lord uses them to transform us by one degree of His beauty to the next that we might fill the earth all the way to the ends with His glory!

    Acts 2:42-47 ||The Real Deal of the New Creation

    His name is Fang Si.,an orphan of the Hmong mountain people of Vietnam who had been adopted by Vietnamese refugees and members of our congregation. His family had been slaughtered before his eyes, and he had escaped into the jungle. He had lived for a decade in an overcrowded orphanage. No family at all. No Mother’s Day. In fact, the idea of a loving mother a pipe dream.  When he arrived, we were ready to offer him all those things. But he was resistant, fearful, angry. His attitude confused many of our church family, but his adoptive parents had been through this before with other children. They knew that after all he had seen and experienced, he could not really imagine what it was like to be loved genuinely by people he didn’t know. He would need proof. Proof of good intentions. Proof of sacrificial love. He needed to see people living in a way and with hearts completely different from those he had lived with.  Our neighbors need such proof, too. And so we are told how to live as a community of faith, a living display of the glory of the God who lives in us.

    Acts 2:14-41 || This is That!

    Have you ever waited and hoped for something for a long time and then, when it finally comes, it is … different than expected? Setting eyes on the Rockies for the first time. The arrival of a baby and the changes she would bring. In everything! A new marriage filled with joys … and challenges. Who knew? The people at the temple on that Pentecost had waited for centuries, waited so long that they forgot what it was they were waiting for. So on this day, they couldn’t make sense of what they saw and heard. Best guess? These guys are drunk.  But this was something else. Something totally unexpected. (It’s bigger than even we imagine!)

    Acts 2:1-13 || The Keys To The Kingdom

    Language is the key to any culture. But without understanding a foreign language, you can’t understand a foreign people. Stare at the sights, eat the food, listen to the music, buy the souvenirs—but at the end of the day, you’re an outsider looking in. The recent explosion of language learning systems like Rosetta Stone and Babel have attempted to bridge the gap between ignorance and fluency. We now have incredible translation technology right in our pockets, with smartphones capable of on-the-fly translation of foreign languages, on-device, instantly. Something far greater than instantaneous translation has already happened. In Acts 2, the language barrier is leveled, and the culture of the new Kingdom is unveiled. This isn’t just the next big thing; it’s fulfilling an ancient promise made centuries earlier. Read Acts 2:1-13 and get ready for a wild ride on Sunday!

    Acts 1 || Phase Two Commences

    “Skip Recap?” The little button appears in the bottom left corner of the TV screen when the next episode begins. If you’re binge watching, you won’t need the recap. But if it’s been a while, you probably do.  After 65 sermons through Luke (!) you probably don’t think you need a recap. But Doctor Luke does. The one he offers here is quite explicit. Jesus came as King. He suffered. Jesus was raised physically. He appeared to his disciples and spoke even more about “the kingdom of God.” Apparently this last bit—the kingdom of God—needed more explaining; it still does. Christians the world over are still confused about it. Does God's kingdom come by military might? Is it merely a “spiritual kingdom” while "this world" is ruled by political leaders? “Thy Kingdom come…on earth as it is in heaven” ? In Acts, we get answers. Don’t skip the recap this week, and don’t miss the next episodes: Phase Two begins here!
