[49] Developing Judgment: How Experts Think and Make Decisions in Complex Environments

In this episode of KeyLIME+, Adam speaks with Dr. Gary Klein about how people make decisions in complex, high‑pressure environments. Drawing on decades of research, Gary describes how expert decision making often looks very different from the step‑by‑step models many of us were taught.  The conversation explores what intuition really means in expert performance and how judgment develops over time. Gary emphasizes that experience alone is not enough, and that learning depends on how people reflect on their decisions, notice what they missed, and adapt their thinking. He also discusses the ShadowBox method as a practical way to make expert thinking visible and to support learning through comparison and self‑reflection, offering a clear window into how decisions are actually made in practice and what that might mean for how we prepare clinicians to think and act in real clinical settings.     Episode Length: 34:26     Resources to check-out     [42] La Concordance de Script et la Formation par Concordance : Des origines aux nouvelles applications    Books  Seeing what others don't  Sources of Power: How people make decisions    Kahneman D, Klein G. [48] Live from the Sim Tank: What's Next for Simulation-Based Education

On this special live edition of KeyLIME+, recorded at the Sim Tank innovation event held at Queen's University, Adam brings together a panel of simulation and education leaders to explore how artificial intelligence is transforming medical simulation training. From personalized learning and adaptive assessment to concerns about de-skilling, data ownership, and the evolving role of educators, the conversation examines both the promise and the pitfalls of tech-enhanced simulation. Together, the panel reflects on how emerging technologies may reshape not just how we teach medicine using sim, but how clinicians learn, think, and perform in an increasingly complex healthcare system.     Episode Length:  43:02     Resources to check-out     Dizon JI, Mendoza NB, Gasevic D, Ganotice Jr FA. [28] Cookies, Charisma & Bias: Exploring the Hidden Consequences and Impact of Teaching Evaluations This episode was first released on November 11, 2025 Description In this episode, Adam (and resident guest co-host Mario Corrado) speak with Dr. Lynfa Stroud about the complexities of teaching evaluations in medical education. They discuss some of the biases that influence evaluations, the unintended consequences that can arise, and the delicate power dynamics between learners and educators. Their conversation underscores the need for a more nuanced, supportive approach to assessing teaching quality - one that moves beyond student ratings to foster genuine growth and development in medical education.  Length of episode: 48:34  Resources to check out   How Teacher Evaluations Broke the University "We give them all A's, and they give us all fives." By Rose Horowitch  https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2025/09/teacher-evaluations-grade-inflation/684185/    The Doctor Fox Lecture: A Paradigm of Educational Seduction Donald H. Naftulin, M.D., John E.
