    280 - A Farewell Film Potluck!

    All good things must come to an end, including podcasts that have been bringing you cinematic joy for 15 years!! It’s been a fun run, but we’ve decided to close the doors on I Like to Movie Movie so we can apply our creative energies in exciting new ways. So while this may sound like “goodbye” it’s more accurate to call it a “see ya later.” As a farewell treat, Dan, Megan, and Stephen have come together for a movie potluck, with each host bringing one of their favorite films to the table for discussion. So today we discuss three excellent films, and you can guess who chose each one (it’s not hard). We’ve got Habit, Ocean’s Twelve, and Miss Congeniality on deck to close it all out. Thank you to everyone who listened, commented, or joined the show over the years. It’s been a pure joy to bond over our collective love of cinema. A big, wet kiss on the cheek from Dan, Stephen, Megan, BB, and Garrett to you, dear listener. As previously noted, this may be an end, but it’s not the end.     It’s crazy to think that Scream has been around for thirty years! To celebrate the anniversary, we dig deep into the entire franchise, leading to an epic discussion about the latest film, Scream 7. Is the meta angle worth keeping? Does Gale make the right hair choices? Is it even possible to see out of a Ghostface make well enough to kill? Was it complete and utter BS what the production did to Melissa Barrera? (Yes, it was). Spoilers abound, so make sure you see these movies before you indulge. Or don’t. It’s fine. You do you. Joining us is Mo, who has proudly declared that this is her favorite film, and who brought a wealth of knowledge and behind-the-scenes trivia to the table (as well as a David Bowie action figure).     276 - The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

    Now that Severance is blowing minds and winning Emmys, we look back at the film where reliable comedy director Ben Stiller first shifted into auteur mode. His ambitious adaptation of the classic James Thurber short story is a mashup of big ideas, clever direction, and appearances from people who you forgot were even in this movie (which you probably forgot existed). It was Stephen’s turn to pick a film, and his surprising selection proves quite discussion-worthy, both in a thematic sense and a technical one. It’s likely you haven’t seen this film in ages — you’re due for a rewatch! GRAB LIFE BY THE HORNS.     We did it!!! The Final Reckoning is here! What started as a silly project to expose Megan to the ultimate action espionage franchise turned into a rebirth for I Like to Movie Movie, and we could not be happier for the results. We also could not be happier to finally be out from under this franchise. We are now free. Free to wear whatever masks we choose. In this episode we look back on the history of the franchise and assess Final Reckoning’s role as not just the end of the story, but the end of a filmmaking era. What’s next for Tom Cruise? What’s next for Christopher McQuarrie? Why did the navy put its hottest soldiers on the same submarine? When did Luther fall ill? Is that Ilsa Faust we see?     273 - Mulholland Drive

    Earlier this year we lost one of the greatest filmmakers to ever do it, David Lynch. From the surrealism of Lost Highway to the melancholic charm of The Straight Story, Lynch embraced a wide range of artistic sensibilities across multiple mediums. His work can charm, terrorize, tittilate, and provoke, often times through a single image. This is especially true for Mulholland Drive, perhaps the most accessible of his notoriously cryptic original works. Largely considered one of the best films ever made, Mulholland Drive is a magnum opus by every metric. Today we honor Lynch’s artistic legacy by doing our darndest to crack this deeply moving neo-noir thriller as wide open as can be (spoiler alert: it’s more about us than the film itself, as is fitting to Lynch’s modus operandi).
