Here is gathered, for the delight of all good listeners, the library of Miguel de Cervantes, wherein knights mistake basins for helmets, shepherds sing of love, captives dream of liberty, rogues practice their arts, and wisdom often rides in company with folly. Enter, therefore, and lend an ear: for in these books the world is turned like a wheel, and every adventure reveals both the madness and nobility of mankind.

  1. Episode 1

Don Quixote Volume I Commendatory Verses

In which the author, weighed down by doubts and the shadow of learned critics, presents a humble yet earnest preface to the adventures of the noble Don Quixote of La Mancha, accompanied by a series of playful and pensive commendatory verses reflecting on chivalry, love, and his faithful squire Sancho Panza. With a lively conversation between the author and his friend offering witty counsel on literary embellishments, this introduction gently prepares the reader for a tale that aims to both entertain and question the grandiose pretensions of knightly romances.

  2. Episode 2

Don Quixote Volume I Preface & Dedication

In which the author, with a modest and respectful tone, dedicates his forthcoming work to a noble patron, expressing hope for protection and favour amidst the critical eyes of the world. Thus, with humble sincerity, he seeks to present his tale under the gracious shadow of a distinguished name.

  3. Episode 3

Don Quixote Volume I Part 1 Chapter 1

In which a gentleman of La Mancha, given to the study of tales of chivalry, becomes so enamoured with the virtues and exploits of knights-errant that he resolves to assume the gallant guise himself, polishing armour and bestowing noble names upon his steed and fair lady. Thus prepared for the fanciful adventures awaiting him, he sets about shaping his new identity with a solemnity versed in the romantic traditions of old.

  4. Episode 4

Don Quixote Volume I Part 1 Chapter 2

In which a gentleman of La Mancha, inspired beyond reason by the chivalric tales of old, embarks upon his first quest in armour most ill-fitting and on his noble steed Rocinante, fraught with lofty hopes yet beset by doubts of his unknighted state. He encounters common folk and a humble inn, which in his dreaming eyes transform into a castle, and so begins to weave for himself the gaudy fabric of knighthood with all the pomp and circumstance that his wild imagination affords.

  5. Episode 5

Don Quixote Volume I Part 1 Chapter 3

In which a madly valiant gentleman, resolved to become a knight-errant, persuades a jocular innkeeper to dub him with solemn ceremony and undertake the traditional vigil over his armour, much to the amusement and bewilderment of all present. As he faces rude interruptions and defends his honour with spirited bravado, the noble stranger is finally knighted in a fashion most novel and sets forth on his imagined chivalrous quest.

  6. Episode 6

Don Quixote Volume I Part 1 Chapter 4

In which the newly knighted Don Quixote sets forth with a gallant heart, seeking to amend wrongs and find a worthy squire, and swiftly intervenes to demand justice for a chastised servant with undaunted fervour. Following this first exploit, he encounters a company of traders and, mistaking them for noble adversaries, boldly challenges their loyalty to his beloved Dulcinea, only to suffer a bruising fall that he endures as a true knight might.

  7. Episode 7

Don Quixote Volume I Part 1 Chapter 5

In which a beleaguered knight, bruised and dust-covered, enacts grand tales from his cherished books to a bewildered peasant who recognises him as a fellow villager rather than the heroes he claims to be; homeward bound and the subject of concern, his family and friends lament the strange influence of these chivalric volumes on their once-sensible neighbour. Meanwhile, plans are afoot to confront this curious folly of knight-errantry by condemning the books that have so beguiled his reason.

  8. Episode 8

Don Quixote Volume I Part 1 Chapter 6

In which a small company, armed with holy water and good judgment, undertakes the solemn task of sorting through a vast collection of knightly romances and courtly poems to decide which shall be condemned to the flames and which spared for their merit or friendship’s sake. Amid much jest and earnestness, they weigh the worthiness of each tome, allowing rare delights amidst the carnage of many foolish and overwrought narratives.
