Michigan at Rutgers Preview, Lions vs Vikings, NFL Week 8 Picks | Halloween Eve w/ HoM

It’s the day before Halloween, and Tom Mazawey joins Kevin and Jeff for the Friday show. Costume plans first, then Michigan’s offensive struggles, the Lions’ win over Green Bay and a big NFC North game against Minnesota, and a full slate of NFL Week 8 picks against the spread. Inside this episode: the brothers and Tom ask what’s wrong with Michigan’s offense, including a stat about yards per carry between the tackles versus outside, the quarterback situation with Tommy Carr named the starter, and what the Wolverines need to see at Rutgers. They also look at the offseason picture and what a roster turnover could mean. Then it’s the Lions. Kevin, Jeff, and Tom talk about what went right and wrong against the Packers, the offense leaving points on the board, Brian Branch’s strong game, Kerby Joseph’s possible return, and the offensive line adjusting with Cade Mays back. They break down Lions-Vikings, a division game with a tough road stretch ahead. Plus: a full round of Week 8 picks against the spread, including Ravens at Bills, Vikings at Lions, Chiefs at Broncos, and Bears at Seahawks on Monday night, and a few Halloween candy debates along the way. 11 Times the Lions Got Screwed by Refs | Lions Beat Packers 20-17 Reaction

The Detroit Lions beat the Green Bay Packers 20-17, and Packers fans are online claiming they got robbed. Kevin and Jeff Hall have a response: 11 times the Lions got hurt by officials or by a bad rule, three of them against Green Bay. Inside this episode: the brothers go through the list one at a time, including the Calvin Johnson non-catch against the Bears, the missed pass interference call in the Cowboys playoff game, the Taylor Decker eligible-receiver touchdown that wasn’t, the late pick call against Pittsburgh, the Seattle batted-ball no-call, and the Justin Tucker 66-yarder after the play clock hit zero. They also cover the Jim Schwartz Thanksgiving challenge flag, the Golden Tate ten-second runoff, and three Packers games, including the Trey Flowers hands-to-the-face calls, the Miracle in Motown, and a 2005 Monday night grounding no-call. They also own the other side: Kevin and Jeff say the Lions got some calls on Sunday, break down why the game was decided on the field (stats, turnovers, and the Packers’ kicker), and talk about what the NFC North looks like with the Bears still winning. Rock and Roll Buck Zumhofe: The Dark Side of the AWA I HoM Episode 16

Content warning: This episode discusses an individual convicted of crimes against children. Listener and viewer discretion is advised. He was a two-time AWA World Light Heavyweight Champion who came to the ring with a boom box on his shoulder. Behind the gimmick was a man with multiple convictions, and a wrestling business that kept hiring him anyway. Kevin and Jeff Hall tell the story of "Rock and Roll" Buck Zumhofe. Inside this episode: how a Minnesota native with limited athletic ability found his way into Verne Gagne's famously brutal training camp, and how a hip-shaking rock and roll gimmick took him through Hawaii, the West Coast, Dallas, and the AWA. Kevin and Jeff cover his title reigns, his feud with Bobby Heenan, his WWF run as a jobber, and the vacated title in 1986 that fans were never told the real reason for. Then the legal record: Zumhofe's convictions in the 1980s, the 2013 arrest, the 2014 trial, and the sentence that followed. Kevin and Jeff keep the focus on the court record, and on the question that runs through the whole story: why promoters, a national cable network, and the wrestling business as a whole kept bringing him back. This is one of the hardest episodes the brothers have recorded. If you or someone you know has been affected by sexual abuse, support is available through RAINN at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673) or rainn.org. Top 20 Pro Athletes Born in Michigan: The Halls of Mediocrity Quiz

Fresh off recording their Steve Howe episode, Jeff challenges Kevin to name the top 20 professional athletes born in the state of Michigan, from a list pulled from an AI search. The list is not exactly beyond debate, and the brothers argue about who's missing. Inside this episode: Kevin works through names like Magic Johnson, Serena Williams, George Gervin, Chris Webber, Jerome Bettis, Joe Louis, Floyd Mayweather, John Smoltz, and Charlie Gehringer. They debate why Tommy Hearns is ranked so low and why Derek Jeter and Jim Abbott aren't on it, and they settle where Jeter was actually born. Then Kevin flips the quiz with a second round: the top five players in University of Michigan baseball history, including Barry Larkin, Bill Freehan, and Jim Abbott. That leads to a Hall of Fame debate over Bill Freehan, Lou Whitaker, Lance Parrish, and Darrell Evans. Want to stump the brothers? Send in your own quiz through YouTube comments, email, or social media. They say they'll run it, and might even put you in the studio to host. Titus Young: The Lions Receiver Whose Career Unraveled on Live TV I HoM Episode 15

In 2011, the Detroit Lions used a second-round pick on Boise State receiver Titus Young to give Matthew Stafford a big-play partner for Calvin Johnson. Less than two seasons later, he was out of the NFL. Kevin and Jeff Hall trace one of the most talented and most troubled careers in Lions history. Inside this episode: Young's 2008 suspension at Boise State and the early red flags that came with him to Detroit. His promising rookie season (48 catches, 607 yards, six touchdowns) and the training camp punch that got him barred from the facility. And the infamous 2012 game against the Green Bay Packers, when he deliberately lined up in the wrong spot on national television. Then Kevin and Jeff cover what came after: his release, a string of arrests in 2013, a prison sentence, and his own account of how head trauma and mental health struggles shaped his life. They also talk about his father Richard's advocacy and the debate over personal accountability versus the support athletes need from teams and players' unions. The story ends on a hopeful note, with Young keeping a low profile and staying out of trouble in recent years. Plus: a preview of next week's profile of one of the most hated figures in pro wrestling history. Subscribe for a new athlete profile every week. Part of the Archive Podcast Network. Top 20 Wrestlers Trained by Verne Gagne: AWA Quiz | Ric Flair, Iron Sheik & More HoM Quiz

Verne Gagne's training camp in the Minnesota farmland turned out some of the biggest names in pro wrestling history. In this bonus quiz episode, Jeff challenges Kevin to name the top 20 wrestlers trained by Gagne for the AWA, ranked from first to last. Inside this episode: Kevin works through a list that includes Ric Flair, Curt Hennig, Ricky Steamboat, the Iron Sheik, Ken Patera, Scott Hall, Sgt. Slaughter, and Bob Backlund. Along the way they share stories from the camp, including how Gagne talked Ric Flair out of quitting, the legendary "shoot" training under Billy Robinson, and the 10 percent cut Gagne took from his students' earnings. Then the conversation widens into a wrestling history debate: how the AWA stacked up against the NWA, the WWF, and World Class in the 1980s, why Nick Bockwinkel may have been the best worker of his era, what went wrong when Verne Gagne held on to the territory days, and why Rick Martel's title loss to Stan Hansen still baffles fans. "Champagne" Tony Lema: Golf's Forgotten Great and Its Saddest What-If Episode 14

In the 1960s, only Arnold Palmer may have been more popular than Tony Lema. He won 12 tournaments in four years, including the 1964 Open Championship at St. Andrews after just 36 hours in Scotland and nine practice holes. Then, at 32 years old and entering the prime of his career, he was gone. Kevin and Jeff Hall tell the story of "Champagne" Tony Lema — golf's greatest unrealized what-if. Inside this episode: how a kid from a working-class Oakland family who caddied and worked in a food factory to help support his mother after his father's death became one of the best golfers in the world. Kevin and Jeff cover the origin of his famous nickname, his stunning win at St. Andrews using a caddy's shot-by-shot instructions on a golf style he'd never played, his 9-1-1 Ryder Cup record, and glowing praise from contemporaries like Byron Nelson and Jack Nicklaus. Then comes the tragedy. On August 24, 1966, Tony and his pregnant wife Betty died in a plane crash on approach to a Chicago-area exhibition, along with their pilot and co-pilot. Kevin and Jeff discuss the circumstances of the crash, the heroism of pilot Doris Mullen in steering away from bystanders, and why fans still believe Tony Lema belongs in the World Golf Hall of Fame.
