Welcome to Space & Sexuality, a new podcast series that brings together leading and emerging scholars in the field of queer geographies to explore cutting-edge research at the intersections of spatiality, sexuality, and subjectivity. Grounded in the fields of geographies of sex and sexualities and trans geographies, in each episode Dr Joe Jukes pursues critical inquiry, reflection, and intellectual exchange with scholars from around the world. Series 1 features conversations with the editors and contributing authors of Queer Geographies: Key Debates and Contending Perspectives (Bain, Podmore, and Arun-Pina, 2025). While discussions engage with academic ideas, they are also shaped by a warm, conversational tone that reflects the collaborative and socially-networked aspects of critical and interdisciplinary academic work. By combining rigorous scholarship with accessible conversation, Space & Sexuality aims to foster global connections among researchers while opening up vital debates to wider audiences.

    Queer suburban place-making, unmaking and remaking with Alison Bain and Julie Podmore

    What is LGBTQ+ life like in the suburbs? Some would argue it isn't very vibrant, if it is there at all. Alison Bain and Julie Podmore join the podcast this week to share how that argument doesn't hold for Canadian metropolitan suburbs. Their book "Queerburbia" presents research findings from 10 municipalities across Canada and in this episode they outline some of its key contributions. Speaking about the "queerburban", Alison and Julie reflect on the enabling power of neologisms in making the unnamed and overlooked aspects of (urban) life concrete. As it relates to the queerburban, place is made, unmade and remade by a variety of institutional, governmental, civic and subcultural actors that are very much a part of city life writ large.     Queer domicidal blueprints with Chan Arun-Pina

    Student housing is a space that many people live 'through', but what structures this living, its gender and sexual possibility? In our discussion, Dr. Chan Arun-Pina problematises how student housing is conceptualised, as it figures a temporary and transitory form of accommodation that constrains experimentation, transformation and senses of permanence. Chan's chapter discusses the cisheteronormativity of housing and its norms and draws from their research into queer senses of home and 'domicide' in India. This research analyses the violence and trauma that can be associated with queer and trans relations to home and the security it (is supposed to) afford dwellers. Chan also shares their unique visual approach to 'blueprinting' socio-spatial research through their multiple roles as an artist, architect and academic.     Queer-trans ecologies in fieldwork with Cleo Wölfle Hazard

    How do you notice the world around you? And how reciprocally can you live with it? In this episode, CWH discusses "queer and trans ecologies", which describe ways of being with non-human species and environmental processes that relate to non-normative embodiment and critical, reparative politics. Cleo reflects on being in dialogue with species and elements that do not use language, as well as what queer and trans geographic practice can look like in and beyond academia.     Creating spaces of and for difference in Amsterdam with Avery Franken

    Amsterdam is one of the world's "gay capitals", but how does queer life take place there? Like other large cities, Amsterdam features a variety of spaces for LGBTQ+ people, each with its own set of norms, socio-economic priorities, imagined client groups and distinct feels. In this episode, Avery Franken shares her Masters' research project which considers the variety of place-making work undertaken across the city, and the inclusions and exclusions this produces. Avery shares ethnographic detail about Amsterdam's queer scene and its POC-led spaces, which may sometimes be overlooked by thinkers and visitors from abroad. Listen to find out more.     Queer geographies in French translation with Karine Duplan

    Academia has a language problem, and the geographies of sexualities are no exception. Whilst the field, at least from my vantage point, is dominated by English scholarship, many worthwhile ideas, concepts and approaches are written and shared through other languages. In this episode Dr. Karin Duplan from the University of Geneva reflects on how she has worked to bridge Francophone geographies of sexualities literatures with other global scholarship. We also discuss her work on inclusive cities, where she considers what makes a city a queer city.     Queer geographies beyond the closet with Ale Boussalem

    The metaphor of the closet is perhaps one of the strongest narrations of queer life. The Gay Liberation Front famously commanded queers to come "out of the closets and into the streets". But what are the limitations of closet-thinking? Who does it include and exclude in its imaginaries? And what is the geography of the closet? In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Ale Boussalem from the University of St. Andrews, who shares his research on the racialisations and spatialiations of the closet.
