Big Spring, Uncertain Summer : Feed, Water and Knowing When to Make the Call

The hay trap. The shed looks great full of hay. But is it full of feed, or full of stem? Leave lambs on drying feed a few weeks too long and they drop five kilos, then you pay to put it back on. You can’t eat a calendar date, so when do you make the call? In this episode Alice talks with livestock consultant Deb Scammell and agronomist Felicity Turner about feed quality, feed testing, protecting ground cover, setting trigger points for selling or finishing stock, and why water should be part of every feed budget. Guests Deb Scammell is a livestock consultant and founder of Talking Livestock, based in the Mid North. She has worked on the SA Drought Hub’s containment feeding project, and presents regularly for Livestock SA, MLA and Sheep Connect SA on nutrition, feed testing and lamb survival.Felicity Turner is a crop and pasture agronomist and sheep producer from the Upper South East. She has led research and extension projects for groups including MacKillop Farm Management Group, Southern Farming Systems and Ag Excellence Alliance. Water Security : What's working on KI - Be Summer ready

What would you do if there was no water to buy, no mains, no bore to fall back on, and destocking wasn't an option? On Kangaroo Island, that's not a hypothetical. Hear how one farming family drought-proofed their property, and what every Hills and Fleurieu farmer can learn before summer arrives. Alice heads across to Kangaroo Island to talk with Jo Sullivan from the KI Landscape Board and Christine Berry from Deep Dene farm about water security and what's actually working on-farm: bigger and deeper dams, solar-pumped reticulation, troughs in every paddock, telemetry that flags leaks, and how salinity and evaporation creep up when the dams run low. We also cover what Hills and Fleurieu farmers can borrow from KI, and why the best time to plan for the next drought is right now, while the dams are full. This is a strong foundation for our upcoming episodes and workshops around farm innovation, feed and water budgetting, containment feeding - all of which depend on reliable, good-quality water. It is also a great lead-in for our Barossa Pasture and Water Innovation Bus Tour on Thurs 15th Oct, see the EventBrite link for more details. Simon shares his experience converting a 65 ha ex‑vineyard into productive grazing country using multi-species cover crops and virtual fencing, while Megan brings 20 years of research insights into welfare, behaviour and technology adoption. A grounded, honest conversation about what works, what doesn’t, and what farmers should consider before dipping a toe into AgTech.
