Waterfowl Management Academy is an online educational community dedicated to helping waterfowl enthusiasts and landowners build better habitat. Through courses, conversations, and expert-led instruction, WMA provides practical, science-based strategies for managing wetlands, growing waterfowl food resources, improving hunting properties, and supporting waterfowl conservation. At WMA, we believe stewardship is a privilege. When ducks have the food, water, and security they need to thrive, everyone benefits. From healthier waterfowl populations to more successful seasons in the field. Better habitat means happier ducks, and when ducks are happy, everybody wins. Ep 5 - Talking "Pressure" with Ira McCauley

In this episode, we take you inside the management strategy of Ira McCauley, veterinarian, outdoor entrepreneur, conservationist, and co-founder of Habitat Flats, to explore how intentional refuge and hunting strategies can shape waterfowl behavior. Ira joins Kale Flaspohler, Dan Crigler, and Mike Flaspohler to discuss the lessons he has learned managing Locust Grove and other properties over nearly two decades. From establishing inviolate refuge to carefully controlling when, where, and how often a property is hunted, Ira shares the management decisions that have evolved through years of observation, record keeping, and hands-on experience. The conversation goes well beyond simply “hunting less.” You’ll learn why refuge should be managed differently than hunting areas, why security cover can be more important than food in a refuge, how early drawdowns can influence moist soil plant communities, and why visual barriers and strategic mowing can make a refuge more attractive to waterfowl. Ira also explains how he uses detailed hunting logs, preseason predictions, postseason summaries, and even drones to monitor his properties while minimizing unnecessary disturbance. One of the biggest lessons is the importance of allowing new birds to establish themselves before introducing hunting pressure, and why putting pressure on a new food source too quickly can change how ducks use it. The discussion also explores nocturnal duck behavior, refuge placement, migration pushes, pressure timing, and how hunting strategies can evolve as habitat, infrastructure, and bird behavior change. For anyone managing private wetlands, duck habitat, mallard habitat, moist soil units, or a hunting property, this episode provides a rare look at how experienced managers balance hunting opportunity with long-term waterfowl habitat and conservation. Ep 4 - Pressure

In this episode of the Waterfowl Management Podcast, we dive into one of the most important and often overlooked pieces of successful waterfowl management, also Pillar 4, Pressure. Kale Flaspohler, Dan Crigler, and Mike Flaspohler break down how hunting pressure and disturbance influence waterfowl behavior, habitat use, and hunting success. Drawing from research, years of wetland management experience, and real-world examples from public and private wetlands, the conversation explores why safety can be just as important as food and how properly managed refuges can actually improve hunting on surrounding properties. You’ll learn why inviolate sanctuaries can help distribute birds across a landscape, how strategically placed refuges encourage daylight movement, and why pressure isn't limited to gunfire. Vehicles, ATVs, lights, walking levees, and other disturbances can all change how birds use your property. The team also discusses how to approach a new hunting property, including limiting blinds, spacing out hunts, creating temporal refuge, observing bird behavior before making permanent decisions, and using cellular cameras to monitor birds while minimizing disturbance. From migration days to cold snaps, private wetlands to larger wetland complexes, this episode provides practical insight into designing a hunting program that works with waterfowl behavior rather than against it. Whether you're managing mallard habitat, moist soil wetlands, private wetlands, or simply trying to improve your duck hunting, this episode will change the way you think about pressure. The goal isn't simply to hunt a wetland more, it’s to manage it in a way that keeps birds safe, moving, and using the habitat you've worked so hard to create.
