The Honour with Sunny Singh Chana MBE - Custodian of Ancient Musical Knowledge (S1, E7)

What does it mean to be the custodian of a musical tradition and knowledge stretching back generations? In this episode of The Honour, Jay Singh-Sohal OBE VR speaks to Sunny Singh Chana MBE, the Birmingham-born Indian classical musician recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours 2025 for services to music and Sikh culture. Sunny’s relationship with music began when he was just four years old. Taken under the wing of renowned masters, he was performing on stage by six and has since devoted his life to the tabla and the much rarer jori, performing internationally, teaching new generations and taking his music into some extraordinary settings, including the Royal Albert Hall and Buckingham Palace. But this is a conversation about much more than musical accomplishment. Sunny explains the spirituality and philosophy that sit at the heart of Indian classical music and explores the rich tradition of Gurbani Sangeet or Sikh scripture expressed through raag, rhythm and compositions passed down through generations. At the heart of Sunny’s story is a striking sense of humility. Rather than seeing himself as a pioneer, he describes himself simply as a servant of a tradition far greater than any individual. His MBE recognises a lifetime spent not only mastering an extraordinary art form, but helping ensure its knowledge, spirituality and cultural inheritance are passed on. As well as supporting young people with autism through the power of music. The Honour tells the stories behind Britain’s honours, meeting ordinary people recognised for extraordinary service and discovering what motivated them to make a difference. 🎧 The Honour with Sunny Singh Chana MBE Presented by Jay Singh-Sohal OBE VR Watch, listen, like, share and subscribe to The Honour: www.youtube.com/@TheHonourUK #TheHonour #SunnyChanaMBE #IndianClassicalMusic #SikhHeritage #GurbaniSangeet #Tabla #Jori #CulturalHeritage #BritishSikhs #HonoursSystem

The Honour with Dr Nasser Kurdy MBE – An Ambassador For Forgiveness (S1, E6)

What does it take to forgive someone who tried to kill you? In Episode 6 of The Honour, Jay Singh-Sohal OBE VR speaks to Dr Nasser Kurdy MBE, consultant orthopaedic surgeon, imam and interfaith campaigner, who was recognised with an MBE in 2026 for services to community and interfaith reconciliation. Nasser has spent years bringing people of different faiths and backgrounds together. But that commitment was tested in the most personal way when he was stabbed outside his mosque, the knife narrowly missing his spinal cord. His response was extraordinary: forgiveness. Nasser explains why forgiveness was not weakness, but a conscious decision not to allow the attack to define the rest of his life. He reflects on the difference between being victimised and living in victimhood, and why forgiveness gave him the freedom to move forward. The conversation also explores his journey to Britain, career in the NHS, work as an imam and friendship with Rabbi Dovid Lewis which demonstrates how dialogue, shared service and friendship can overcome division. Above all, Nasser leaves one powerful message: “Don’t forget to forgive.” 🎧 Watch or listen to Episode 6 of The Honour now. 👍 Like | 💬 Comment | 🔄 Share | 🔔 Subscribe 📺 YouTube: @thehonouruk The Honour tells the stories behind Britain’s honours, meeting ordinary people recognised for extraordinary service and discovering what motivated them to make a difference. #TheHonour #NasserKurdyMBE #PowerOfForgiveness #Forgiveness #Interfaith #InterfaithDialogue #CommunityCohesion #PublicService #HonoursSystem #MBE

The Honour with Michael Winstanley OBE - Political Representation Counts (S1, E5)

In this episode of The Honour, Jay Singh-Sohal OBE VR speaks to Michael Winstanley OBE, recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours 2025 for his political and public service. Michael’s political journey began as a teenager in Wigan, inspired to stand up for what he believed in even when his was the only Conservative hand raised in the classroom. He went on to spend 16 years as a Wigan councillor, become Mayor of the borough where he was born and raised, chair the Conservative Party in the North West and represent grassroots volunteers at the highest levels of the party. Michael reflects on the often unseen side of political life: the volunteers, organisers and campaigners who give their time because they believe in democracy and want to improve their communities. Michael also discusses how political debate has changed in the age of social media, arguing for robust disagreement without the vitriol that increasingly characterises public life. Looking back on decades of political and public service, Michael’s message is ultimately about participation rather than position: get involved, stand by your principles and never underestimate the difference you can make in your own community. 🎙️ Michael Winstanley OBE 🎧 Hosted by Major Jay Singh-Sohal OBE VR If this conversation inspires you, please subscribe, follow and share The Honour, and help us tell more of the extraordinary human stories behind Britain’s honours. The Honour with Professor Monder Ram CBE - Changing How Britain Sees Migrant Success (S1, E4)

How does the migrant experience of settling in Britain and working hard to prosper become a lifelong mission to change the system? In this episode of _The Honour_, Jay Singh-Sohal OBE VR speaks with *Professor Monder Ram CBE*, one of Britain’s leading authorities on ethnic minority entrepreneurship, whose pioneering research has helped change the way businesses from diverse communities are understood and supported. Professor Ram traces his motivation back to his childhood in Birmingham. His parents arrived in Britain in the late 1950s with very little. His father worked in foundries before establishing a grocery shop and later a clothing business. Those experiences showed him that entrepreneurship was not an abstract academic subject, but an important part of how migrant families built new lives and contributed to Britain. He explains why the contribution of ethnic minority businesses was too often overlooked or stereotyped, and how he set out to ensure their stories were properly understood. That work ultimately led to the Centre for Research in Ethnic Minority Entrepreneurship (CREME) at Aston University and decades of research influencing policymakers, banks, businesses and government. Having previously received an OBE, Professor Ram was appointed *CBE in the King’s Birthday Honours 2026 for services to ethnic minority business and entrepreneurship*. He discusses what that recognition means, his memories of receiving his first honour from Queen Elizabeth II and why the latest award represents something much bigger than one individual. His story is ultimately about understanding where you come from, finding your voice and using it to create lasting change. _The Honour_ tells the stories behind Britain’s honours, meeting ordinary people recognised for extraordinary service and discovering what motivated them to make a difference. *Like, subscribe and share* to help us tell more of these remarkable stories. The Honour with Jo McIntyre BEM & Jennifer Lamboll BEM – The Power of Stepping Forward (S1, E3)

What does a lifetime of helping others really look like? In this episode of The Honour, Jay Singh-Sohal OBE VR speaks with and Jo McIntyre BEM and Jennifer Lamboll BEM , two friends whose decades of service in Thames Valley Police have been matched by an extraordinary commitment to supporting people in their communities. Jennifer reflects on almost four decades with Thames Valley Police, including 23 years as a Special Constable, her work supporting diversity within policing, mentoring young people and volunteering within her community. She also reveals the emotional moment she discovered she had been awarded the British Empire Medal, and why she still finds it difficult to talk about her own achievements. Jo shares how surviving a rare and life-threatening blood condition changed her outlook on life and led her to establish the TTP Network, supporting hundreds of patients and families affected by Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura. She also discusses her work tackling domestic abuse, giving victims a voice and helping people recognise when someone around them may need support. The motivation behind their stories is remarkably similar: see where help is needed, step forward and do something about it. And their message to anyone who thinks they have nothing to offer is equally powerful: everyone has skills that can make a difference, sometimes it takes only a few hours of your time. The Honour with Carl Portman MBE - Changing Lives, One Move at a Time (S1, E2)

What can a game of chess teach us about choices, consequences and second chances? In this episode of The Honour, Jay Singh-Sohal OBE VR speaks to Carl Portman MBE, recognised in the New Year Honours 2026 for his services to prisoners and prison chess. Carl’s remarkable relationship with chess began as a 12-year-old Birmingham schoolboy, when a rainstorm kept him off the football pitch and led him upstairs to his school chess club. More than five decades later, the game has become central to his life, and a powerful means of helping others transform theirs. As Manager of Chess in Prisons for the English Chess Federation, Carl has spent years taking the game behind prison walls, using it to encourage rehabilitation, responsibility, patience and community. He shares moving stories of prisoners who found purpose through chess, including people facing isolation, broken family relationships and some of the darkest moments of their lives. For Carl, the lesson extends far beyond the chessboard: think before you move and take responsibility for the decisions you make. Carl also reflects candidly on receiving an MBE, admitting that he initially considered not accepting it. What changed his mind was the realisation that the honour could become another tool to champion the cause he cares about: “If you can use it for a force for good, use that title.” The Honour goes beyond the medals, titles and citations to discover the people behind Britain’s honours, the challenges they overcame, the lessons they learned and what a lifetime of service can teach the rest of us. 🎙️ Episode 2: Carl Portman MBE 🎧 Hosted by Major Jay Singh-Sohal OBE VR If this conversation inspires you, please subscribe, follow and share The Honour, and help us tell more of the extraordinary human stories behind Britain’s honours. www.youtube.com/@TheHonourUK Email us: info.thehonour@gmail.com #HonourPodcast #InspiringStories #PublicService #Chess #Rehabilitation

The Honour with VADM Sir Andy Kyte KBE CB FCILT – From Kettering to a Knighthood (S1, E1)

What takes someone from an ordinary upbringing in Kettering to the highest levels of Britain’s Armed Forces, and ultimately to a knighthood? In the inaugural episode of The Honour, Major Jay Singh-Sohal OBE VR speaks to Vice Admiral Sir Andy Kyte KBE CB, recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours 2026 for his outstanding contribution to defence after almost four decades of service. Sir Andy speaks candidly about the surreal moment he discovered he was to become a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire – an honour that left him asking simply: “Why me?” But this is a conversation about much more than a knighthood. From growing up in Kettering and attending an ordinary comprehensive school, to finding confidence through the Royal Navy and eventually leading thousands of people across Defence, Sir Andy reflects on the opportunities, values and people that shaped his remarkable journey. He discusses his experiences in Northern Ireland, the Hong Kong handover, Afghanistan, Korea and the UK’s response to COVID-19, alongside what nearly 40 years of leadership have taught him about people, potential and public service. At the heart of the conversation is Sir Andy’s passionate belief in social mobility: that talent should never be limited by where someone comes from, the school they attended or the circumstances of their birth. His message to anyone wondering what they might be capable of is simple: “If you’re good enough, you’re good enough.” And if you have the potential and are prepared to seize the opportunities in front of you, “the sky’s the limit.” The Honour goes beyond the medals, titles and citations to discover the people behind Britain’s honours – the challenges they overcame, the lessons they learned and what a lifetime of service can teach the rest of us. 🎙️ Episode 1: Vice Admiral Sir Andy Kyte KBE CB 🎧 Hosted by Major Jay Singh-Sohal OBE VR If this conversation inspires you, please subscribe, follow and share The Honour, and help us tell more of the extraordinary human stories behind Britain’s honours. https://www.youtube.com/@TheHonourUK HonourPodcast #InspiringStories #PublicService
