Breaking Generational Cycles & Finding Joy with Yesenia | S2 E8

What happens when you do everything you were told would make you successful, but still feel like something is missing? In Season 2, Episode 8 of The Missing Book Podcast, I sit down with psychotherapist and author Yesenia to talk about her book, The Cycle Ends with Me. And let me tell you, this conversation touched places in my own story that I’m still learning to understand. As two Dominican women, we talk honestly about growing up in hardworking immigrant families, the pressure to succeed, and the feelings we sometimes learned to carry quietly. We can love our parents, appreciate their sacrifices, and still acknowledge that there were moments when we needed more emotional support. Yesenia shares how being called “La Nerviosa” at just six years old shaped the way she saw herself, and how she began to understand the little girl behind that label. Together, we explore perfectionism, abandonment, family expectations, and what it means to give ourselves the love, reassurance, and compassion we needed growing up. There are tender moments, a little laughter, and reflections that made me pause. We also talk about joy, remembering what made us feel free, allowing ourselves to take up space, and understanding that healing takes time. I hope this conversation leaves you feeling seen and encourages you to be a little kinder to yourself. You deserve care, community, and moments of happiness along the way. 💛 🎧 Listen and reflect with us: What brings you joy? 🎙️ Follow The Missing Book Podcast on Spotify for conversations with authors, illustrators, educators, poets, and storytellers whose voices deserve to be heard. Luis Jimenez on HOPE, Literacy, and Listening to the Community | S2 E7

What happens when you stop deciding what a community needs and start asking? In this episode of The Missing Book, I sit down with my dear friend Luis Jimenez, founder of Helping Our People Evolve (HOPE). Luis shares how growing up in Washington Heights, struggling to read, and finding teachers who believed in him shaped the work he does today. We talk about the moment his mother helped him realize that HOPE had to be guided by the community, not by his own ideas alone. That lesson led him to listen to families and children, connect them with local artists and educators, and help more kids build home libraries with books that reflect who they are. Luis also speaks honestly about the barriers people face because of how they speak or look, and why the people creating and teaching our culture deserve opportunities to lead. Learn more about HOPE: https://helpingourpeopleevolve.org If this conversation stays with you, share it with someone who believes in the talent already living in our communities. 🎙️ Follow The Missing Book Podcast for conversations with authors, illustrators, educators, poets, and storytellers whose voices deserve to be heard. More Than a Bookstore: Building Literacy and Community with Loc’d & Lit

In Season 2, Episode 5 of The Missing Book Podcast, Luz Maria Mack sits down with longtime friends Alanna Lewis-Ramirez and Triciah Claxton, the founders of Loc’d & Lit. Alanna and Triciah are Bronx girls, island girls, avid readers, booksellers, and literacy advocates working toward opening a brick-and-mortar bookstore in the Bronx. What began as a Bookstagram page celebrating books by Black and Brown authors has grown into a community-centered literary organization that hosts events, supports independent authors, builds meaningful partnerships, and places books directly into the hands of readers. In this heartfelt and funny conversation, Alanna and Triciah share how the lack of bookstores and literary resources in the Bronx inspired their mission. They discuss the research, volunteering, planning, and relationship-building that helped them turn their vision into action. Although Loc’d & Lit does not yet have a permanent storefront, it is already a fully operational bookstore and a trusted presence in the community. Through partnerships, literary events, book donations, and free giveaways, Alanna and Triciah work to ensure that a lack of money never prevents someone from experiencing the comfort, knowledge, joy, or possibility found inside a book. The conversation also explores the importance of supporting traditionally published and independent authors, creating safe spaces through bookstores and libraries, and giving Black and Brown children access to stories that reflect their faces, families, cultures, and communities. Alanna, Triciah, and Luz also reflect on an opportunity that did not result in a grant but still created an important conversation and gained them a new supporter. It is a reminder that success does not always arrive in the form we expect. Sometimes we do not receive the funding or opportunity, but we gain a fan, build awareness, and plant the seed for something greater. This episode is a celebration of friendship, perseverance, literacy, representation, and the power of creating the spaces our communities deserve. You Don’t Have to Publish to Be a Writer | The Missing Book Podcast, Season 2 Ep. 4

In Season 2, Episode 4 of The Missing Book Podcast, I sit down with my personal bestie, Lillian—a Dominican writer, artist, paraprofessional, and one of the most creative people I know. She is also the first writer who told me, “I don’t write for anyone. I write for me.” Lillian shares how attending the Dominican Writers Association retreat helped her finally see herself as a writer. We talk about creating for ourselves, protecting the heart and culture within our stories, and why we do not need to publish a book or receive anyone else’s approval to claim our creativity. We also discuss her work with children, the challenges facing public-school educators, and the importance of reading to our children. One of my favorite moments is hearing how her bilingual students connected with Little María. When Latino children see their language, families, traditions, and experiences reflected in books, they feel seen and proud of who they are. I always say that books are the great equalizers. When we cannot travel, books can take us around the world. When we feel alone, they can introduce us to new friends. An iPad can never replace sitting beside a child and reading their favorite story again and again. This episode is for anyone who has ever questioned whether they are truly a writer, artist, or creative because they have not published or shared their work. Sometimes, the only thing your work is missing is your own stamp of approval. 🎙️ Subscribe to The Missing Book Podcast for conversations with authors, illustrators, educators, poets, and storytellers whose voices deserve to be heard. Your Destiny Belongs to You with Angela Arias | Season 2, Episode 3

In Season 2, Episode 3 of The Missing Book Podcast, Luz Maria Mack speaks with retired educator, mentor, and author Angela Arias, lovingly known by her students as “Dr. Mom.” Angela shares her journey from the Dominican Republic to New York City, her 35-year career in education, and her passion for mentoring first-generation students and women of color. She also discusses her book Half a Century Ago, inspired by her childhood experience as a young immigrant growing up in New York during the 1970s. Angela explains why she refused to change her story to fit the publishing industry’s expectation that Latino stories must always focus on trauma. Instead, she chose to believe in her voice and publish stories rooted in family, education, resilience, culture, and love. This powerful conversation reminds us that our stories matter, our destinies belong to us, and we do not have to wait for permission to share our truth. 🎙️ Subscribe to The Missing Book Podcast for conversations with authors, illustrators, educators, poets, and storytellers whose voices deserve to be heard. Season 2, Episode 2: You Are the Author of Your Life with Liza May Read

What happens when someone who struggled with reading grows up to become an author and helps young people believe in themselves? In Season 2, Episode 2 of The Missing Book Podcast, I sit down with author and educator Liza May Read for a beautiful and honest conversation about finding your purpose, believing in yourself, and having the courage to keep going even when you are afraid. Liza shares how struggling with reading shaped her childhood and how that journey eventually led her to books, writing, and working with students in New York City schools. We also talk about her book Mirror: Meet Yourself, Become the Author of Your Life and the work she is doing to remind young people that they have the power to write their own story. We get real about limiting beliefs, self-publishing, finding your voice, learning to ask for help, and doing the work even when everything is not perfect. We also talk about why our past is part of our story, but it does not have to decide what comes next. One of my favorite reminders from this conversation is simple. You are the author of your life, and you are still writing your story. ✨ 🎙️ Subscribe to The Missing Book Podcast for conversations with authors, illustrators, educators, poets, and storytellers whose voices deserve to be heard. S2E1: Writing Our Stories Into the World with Christine Osoria

What happens when your child asks, “Why doesn’t anyone know we exist?” In the first episode of Season 2 of The Missing Book Podcast, Luz Maria Mack sits down with her friend, author and entrepreneur Christine Osoria, for a deeply personal conversation about cultural identity, motherhood, representation, and creating the spaces we wish existed. Christine shares the story behind her children's book, Rosalia the Honduran American, which was inspired by her daughter questioning why people knew about the Dominican Republic but did not know about Honduras. It was a moment that brought Christine back to her own childhood growing up Honduran American in the Bronx and ultimately inspired her to write a story that would help children feel proud of where they come from. Christine also talks about her journey from self-published author to founder of Lavish Booktique, a pop-up bookstore created to give more visibility to women writers and stories that are too often overlooked. Luz and Christine get personal about what it means to build something while also being mothers, working full time, raising children, supporting their dreams, and learning that success does not have to happen according to someone else's timeline. At its heart, this episode is about being proud of who you are, making room for stories that are missing, supporting other women, and permitting yourself to enjoy the journey. Because our children should never have to wonder whether their culture matters. Sometimes seeing Honduras, hearing Spanish, recognizing a baleada made by Abuelita, or reading about a family that looks like theirs can be the very thing that tells a child: I belong here too. 🎙️ Subscribe to The Missing Book Podcast for conversations with authors, illustrators, educators, poets, and storytellers whose voices deserve to be heard.
