Fear Versus Ego - Know the Difference

Is fear protecting your well-being—or is your ego protecting the identity you worked so hard to build? In this episode of What Are You Talking About!, Tania and Marilyn go one layer deeper than unnecessary fear. They explore how fear and ego become tangled—and how concerns about judgment, rejection, embarrassment, failure, status or losing control can quietly keep us from becoming who we are meant to be. Fear may say, “This isn’t safe.” Ego may say, “What will people think?” Both can create a real stress response, but they are not protecting the same thing. Sometimes the threat is physical or emotional harm. Other times, it is our reputation, competence, approval, lifestyle, career identity or familiar version of ourselves. Tania and Marilyn examine why we remain in careers, relationships, roles and beliefs we may have outgrown. They discuss cultural expectations, the pressure to appear successful, perfectionism, changing direction and the grief that can accompany releasing an old identity. They reflect on Bill Gates leaving Harvard to build Microsoft; the idea of impulsive choices raised by the title Fools Rush In; and Dolly Parton as an example of extraordinary success grounded in humility and generosity. Tania also shares insight from her contribution, “The Light and the Peek” (pp. 241–251), in Laura M. Sánchez Ramírez’s anthology Seeds of Purpose: Our younger and older selves remain connected: as children, we imagine the women we may become; later, we may mourn who we once were. Growth can involve grief—but grief does not mean the change is wrong. Before fear makes the decision, pause and ask: Is this protecting my well-being, or protecting my ego? Sometimes the alarm warns of genuine danger. Sometimes it warns that you might be judged, fail or become someone new. Courage is not always pushing through fear; sometimes it is loosening your grip on who you thought you had to be.RESEARCH & REFERENCES • Bill Gates—Source Code and his early life: Gates’s account covers his childhood, Harvard years and decision to leave college and create Microsoft with Paul Allen. • Fools Rush In (1997): Film information and synopsis. • Dolly Parton—Library of Congress: Biography and career timeline. • Seeds of Purpose, curated by Laura M. Stop Waiting - Move Forward Anyway With Evelin Andrade — Part 2

What are you waiting for before moving forward—more money, better circumstances, greater confidence, or the perfect time? In Part 2, Tania and Marilyn continue their conversation with Evelin Andrade Baez about overcoming adversity, trusting life’s nudges, and taking the next step even when you do not feel ready. Through experiences involving loss, motherhood, nursing, leadership, ADHD, faith, finances, and family, Evelin reminds us that our circumstances do not have to determine our future. Moving forward does not mean ignoring what we have experienced; it means honoring it without allowing it to keep us stuck. The conversation also addresses the doubts that make us question our value: Who am I to do this? Will anyone take me seriously? What will people think? We do not have to be influencers, authors, or experts for our experiences to matter. What we have lived and learned may be exactly what someone else needs to hear. You will also hear an honest discussion about aging, creativity, reinvention, and returning to the parts of yourself you may have set aside. Your life does not have to remain on hold until everything is perfect. Give yourself grace when you need time to heal or adjust—but respect your time enough to keep building a life without regret. THE 2-MINUTE TOOLS Burn the List: Write down the fears, excuses, or limiting beliefs you are ready to release. Safely burn or tear up the list as a symbolic act of letting go. Break the Plate: Write what has been holding you back on a plate, then safely break it inside a secure bag or container as a symbol of releasing its power. Remember That Smile: Place a childhood photo that captures your genuine smile where you will see it daily. Let it reconnect you with your original joy, confidence, curiosity, and light. You do not have to change your entire life today. Choose one small action and begin moving forward anyway. Erasing Unnecessary Fear

Absolutely—I removed every reference to ego and adjusted the takeaway, tool, and keywords accordingly. Is fear protecting you—or preventing you from becoming who you’re meant to be? In this episode of WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!, Tania and Marilyn explore how unnecessary fear can keep us overthinking, procrastinating, shrinking ourselves, and remaining stuck in situations we have outgrown. Some fear is essential. It alerts us to real danger and helps keep us safe. But unnecessary fear can grow from past experiences, limiting beliefs, imagined worst-case scenarios, and our natural desire to remain with what feels safe and familiar—even when familiar no longer feels fulfilling. Through honest conversation, personal stories, humor, and reflection, Tania and Marilyn examine how fear can disguise itself as logic, perfectionism, control, or “waiting for the right time.” They remind us that courage does not require fear to disappear. It begins when we recognize the fear, question its message, and take one intentional step forward anyway. IN THIS EPISODE, WE TALK ABOUT: • The difference between protective fear and unnecessary fear • How fear and overthinking influence our choices • Why change and uncertainty can feel so uncomfortable • How past experiences can shape present-day fear responses • Fear disguised as procrastination, perfectionism, or practicality • Separating facts from imagined worst-case scenarios • Building courage through small, manageable actions • Trusting yourself even when the outcome is uncertain YOUR 2-MINUTE TOOL: NAME IT, QUESTION IT, MOVE Pause and take one slow breath. Name the fear you are experiencing, then ask: Is there a real and immediate danger? What facts support this fear?Is this fear protecting me—or simply keeping me in my comfort zone? What is one small, safe step I can take today? You do not have to erase every fear before moving forward. You only have to stop allowing unnecessary fear to make your decisions. THE WAYTA TAKEAWAY: Fear may encourage you to stay with what is familiar, but courage makes room for who you are becoming. Empty Nest - Making Room for What's Next

What happens when your children leave home and the house suddenly feels too quiet? In this honest and emotional conversation about the empty-nest transition, Tania and Marilyn are joined by longtime friends Betty and Alex Pace, hosts of the Drink A Chair podcast, to talk about letting go, staying connected to adult children, reconnecting as a couple, and rediscovering who you are beyond active parenting. Becoming an empty nester can bring grief, loneliness, worry, pride, freedom, and possibility—sometimes all at once. Betty and Alex share what happened when their two sons moved out, why the experience affected both Mom and Dad, and how they learned that an empty nest does not mean the end of parenthood. It means learning to parent differently. Together, we explore the emotional impact of children leaving home, marriage after the kids move out, maintaining a healthy relationship with adult children, and finding new purpose in midlife. We also talk about returning to old passions, creating new routines, traveling as a couple, and building a bucket list filled with the experiences that still light you up. One of the episode’s most powerful reminders comes from Alex: Trust your children—and trust the foundation you spent years building. Like Mr. Miyagi’s “wax on, wax off” lessons in The Karate Kid, the small things parents teach every day become the tools their children carry into adulthood. In This Episode, We Talk About The grief and identity shift that can accompany an empty nestWhy fathers experience empty-nest emotions, tooLetting adult children go without losing your connectionTrusting the values and life skills you gave your childrenPreparing young adults for independent livingReconnecting with your spouse after the children move outFinding purpose, hobbies, freedom, and joy in midlifeCreating a “What Lights Me Up?” bucket-list boxRemembering that you never stop being a parent—your role simply changesResources Mentioned The Silent Patient by Alex MichaelidesDrink A Chair with Alex and Betty PaceThe Karate Kid and the Mr. Miyagi “wax on, wax off” parenting analogyPinterest as a digital place to collect bucket-list ideas“Eight Days a Week” by The BeatlesJoin the WAYTA Conversation What has been the hardest—and most surprising—part of watching your children become independent? The Courage to Change

What if the change you’ve been avoiding is exactly what could lead you toward the life you truly want? Change can feel uncomfortable, uncertain, and even frightening—but remaining stuck can cost us more than taking the first step. In this episode of What Are You Talking About!, Tania and Marilyn have an honest conversation about finding the courage to change, letting go of what no longer serves us, and moving forward even when we don’t have every answer. Whether you’re considering a career change, navigating a personal transition, rebuilding your confidence, or simply recognizing that something in your life needs to shift, this episode is a reminder that courage doesn’t mean being fearless. Courage means listening to yourself, trusting what you know, and choosing to take the next right step. IN THIS EPISODE, YOU’LL DISCOVER: • Why change can feel so difficult—even when we know it’s necessary • How fear and uncertainty can keep us attached to familiar patterns • The difference between waiting to feel ready and choosing to move forward • Why small, intentional steps can create meaningful transformation • How self-trust grows each time we honor what we know needs to change • Why courage is not the absence of fear, but the decision to act despite it • How to recognize when you have outgrown a habit, situation, relationship, or version of yourself YOUR WAYTA REFLECTION: What is one change you know you need to make—and what is one small step you can take toward it today?
