18: Biblical Encouragement for Ministry Struggles: 5 Mindset Strategies That Help You Survive

Are you feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, lonely, or weighed down by the expectations of ministry? Whether you're a pastor's wife or minister's wife, the challenges of serving in ministry can sometimes leave you feeling stretched thin and wondering how to keep going. In this episode of Thriving Pastor's Wife podcast, Susan Belisle shares five biblical mindset strategies to help you navigate the common struggles of ministry with greater peace, strength, and confidence. Ministry can be demanding. Between church responsibilities, family commitments, relationships, and the expectations that often come with being a pastor's wife, it's easy to lose sight of your own needs and become overwhelmed. You may find yourself struggling with ministry burnout, loneliness, a lack of genuine friendships, unrealistic expectations, or the challenge of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. But what if changing the way you think about these struggles could change the way you experience ministry? In this episode, you'll discover how to use biblical truth to reshape your ministry mindset, establish healthier boundaries, develop meaningful connections, and find renewed strength for your calling. In This Episode, You'll Discover: How to overcome ministry overwhelm and burnout: Learn why you don't have to do everything or carry every responsibility. Discover how to serve faithfully without becoming overwhelmed. How to navigate loneliness as a pastor's wife: Understand why being surrounded by people doesn't always mean having genuine friendships and why meaningful connection matters. How to overcome unrealistic ministry expectations: Stop living for everyone's approval and start living from your God-given identity in Christ. How to create a healthier work-life balance: Learn why your marriage, family, personal well-being, and relationships are not distractions from ministry. How to maintain a healthy ministry mindset during difficult seasons: Discover how to trust God's presence, strength, and guidance when ministry feels challenging. The 5 Biblical Mindset Strategies I can serve faithfully without carrying everything. I don't have to be everyone's friend. I need healthy, genuine relationships. I live from God's approval, not for everyone's approval. My ministry is important, but it is not my entire life. I can trust God's presence, strength, and guidance one day at a time. Your Weekly Mindset Challenge Identify the ministry struggle that is creating the greatest challenge for you right now. Write down the thoughts you're having about that situation. Ask yourself: Is this thought aligned with God's Word? What does Scripture say about this situation? What is a healthier, more biblical way to think about it? What is one small action I can take this week that reflects this new mindset? Remember, changing your mindset isn't about simply thinking positively. It's about learning to recognize thoughts that aren't aligned with God's truth and bringing your thinking back to His Word. 17: Ministry Loneliness: Why Pastors’ Wives Feel Unseen (and What Helps)

Have you ever served, smiled, and greeted everyone at church, then gone home feeling like nobody really saw you? You can be surrounded by people and still feel lonely. In this episode, we look at the hidden side of ministry loneliness: why pastors’ wives so often feel unseen, the signs that are easy to miss, and how serving at your own expense can leave you emotionally depleted and on the road to burnout. You’ll also get five practical ways to build true friends, real connection, and a supportive community this week, so you can have a healthy ministry and a healthier work life balance. If you’re ready to stop pushing through on your own, this biblical encouragement is for you. You don’t have to wait for someone to notice you’re lonely before you start taking steps toward connection. In This Episode, We Talk About Why being surrounded by people is not the same as being truly connected to people Three reasons pastors’ wives feel unseen: people see what you do but not what it costs, you’re known for your role instead of as a person, and you give more than you receive Six signs of hidden loneliness, from staying busy to feeling guilty about making time for yourself How over-functioning and burnout leave little room for friendship What Ephesians 4:11-12 says about who carries the ministry Five practical ways to prevent loneliness and build community A three-question Connection Check-In you can do with your journal Key Takeaways Being surrounded by people is not the same as being truly connected to people. You can love your church and support your husband without being available for everything. You don’t have to earn your place in the church by how much you do. Boundaries aren’t a rejection of ministry. They make room for a healthier, more sustainable ministry. You are more than what you do for your church. You deserve to be encouraged, supported, and known, too. Five Ways to Build Connection and Community Make connection a priority, not an afterthought. Build true friends outside your ministry role. Practice being known, not just being helpful. Set boundaries around serving. Take the initiative to create community. Your Connection Check-In (Journal Questions) Awareness: Where in my life am I feeling unseen, disconnected, or emotionally depleted? Ownership: What am I continuing to carry or do that is leaving too little room for relationships? Action: What is one small step I can take this week to build a meaningful connection? This Week’s Challenge Take one intentional step toward connection. Reach out to someone you miss, invite another woman for coffee, or let a trusted friend see beyond your ministry role. 16: Ministry To-Do List Overload: 3 Mindset Shifts for More Peace and Calm

Do you go to bed thinking about everything you didn’t get done, then wake up to a brand-new list? If you’re a ministry wife, it can feel like there’s always one more person to help and one more thing you should be doing. In this episode, Susan shares three mindset shifts that can help you release the pressure, embrace God’s design for healthy ministry, and find more calm in your calling. Sometimes the problem isn’t the number of things on your list. It’s the way we’re thinking about our responsibilities. In This Episode Why a never-ending to-do list can lead to ministry burnout, and how your mindset shapes the load you carry Shift #1: You don’t have to do it all (being responsible without being responsible for everything) Shift #2: Your calling is to equip others, not do everything yourself Shift #3: Allowing others to serve is a blessing, not a burden How sharing the work builds true friends, connection, and fellowship, and eases the loneliness of carrying ministry alone A simple four-question exercise to sort your list and protect time for rest, a key part of work-life balance Susan’s personal story of being a “master” delegator and learning to release more Key Scriptures Mark 1:35–38 Ephesians 4:11–12 Exodus 18 (Moses and Jethro) 1 Corinthians 12 Romans 12:6 Reflective Question What am I carrying right now that I have assumed is my responsibility? Weekly Action Item Choose one responsibility you’ve been carrying and ask whether someone else could share it, take it over, or learn to do it. Then take one small step: have a conversation, invite someone to help, or prayerfully release it. 15: Ministry Stress and Your Nervous System: Biblical Encouragement for Finding Peace and Calm

Have you ever been so worn out from ministry that you can't relax, even when you finally sit down? In this episode of Thriving Pastor's Wife, Susan talks about what ministry stress does to your nervous system and why your body's stress response is not a spiritual failure. If you're a pastor's wife or ministry wife who has been pouring out for everyone else, this conversation offers biblical encouragement and practical ways to find peace and calm. In This Episode Why it's so hard to relax after a demanding season of ministry A simple explanation of the nervous system and how ongoing stress affects your body God's invitation to rest in Matthew 11:28–30 and Psalm 46:10 Five practical ways to calm your body and refresh your soul: notice, breathe, take thoughts captive, set boundaries, and build small rhythms of rest What Elijah's story teaches us about God's care for the whole person Why seeking professional help is a wise step, not a lack of faith A three-question reflection to help you take one small step toward peace Key Scriptures Matthew 11:28–30 — Jesus' invitation to the weary Psalm 46:10 — Be still and know that He is God Philippians 4:6–9 — Prayer, peace, and directing our thoughts 2 Corinthians 10:5 — Taking thoughts captive Luke 5:16 — Jesus withdrawing to pray 1 Kings 19:1–18 — Elijah's exhaustion and God's care Psalm 29:11 — God's strength and peace Reflective Question "What is one source of stress you need to acknowledge honestly, and what is one small step you can take this week to make space for peace and restoration?" This Week's Action Step: The Five-Minute Peace Pause Set aside five minutes each day this week. Pause and notice how you're feeling physically and emotionally. Take a few gentle, unforced breaths. Read a short passage of Scripture. Ask God what you need to release, what you need to address, and what you can trust Him with today. You may not be able to remove every stressor from your life, but you can begin creating space to respond with greater awareness, wisdom, and peace. Friend, you are more than what you do for your church, and you don't have to carry it all. You can serve faithfully without living in a constant state of stress, and you don't have to walk through ministry alone. 14: Ministry Stress: 5 Mindset Shifts for a Healthier Ministry-Life Balance.

Do you love Jesus, love your church, and still feel tired in a way sleep doesn't touch? If you're a pastor's wife, a ministry wife, a women's ministry leader, a worship team member, a children's ministry volunteer, or a woman who simply says yes when the church needs someone, this episode is for you. Ministry stress doesn't only land on those with a title. It settles into the heart of any woman who serves, and it can quietly steal your peace. Here's the hope: peace and ministry are not enemies. The change you need may not be your calendar or your church. It may be the way you're seeing it all. In this episode, Susan walks through five mindset shifts that bring biblical encouragement and a healthier ministry-life balance, so you can serve faithfully and live fully. In This Episode Why ministry stress is often about the story you're living inside, not just your schedule Shift #1: From "I have to be everything" to "I am one part of the body" Shift #2: From "rest is a reward" to "rest is a gift" from God Shift #3: From "my worth is in what I do" to "my worth is in whose I am" Shift #4: From "everyone's expectations" to "God's calling" Shift #5: From "I'm alone in this" to "I was never meant to do this alone" How loneliness, burnout, and church hurt can quietly erode your peace, and what to do about it Why true friends and real community are essential for a healthy ministry Practical steps to start building work life balance without guilt Key Scriptures 1 Corinthians 12:12-27: One body, many parts Genesis 2:2-3: God blessed the seventh day and made it holy Mark 2:27: The Sabbath was made for man Psalm 127:2: "He grants sleep to those he loves" Matthew 11:28: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened" Ephesians 2:10: We are God's workmanship Galatians 1:10: Serving Christ, not seeking the approval of people Ecclesiastes 4:9-10: Two are better than one John 14:27: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you" Reflective Question Which of these five shifts do I need most right now, and what is one small step I can take toward it? Weekly Action Item Pick one shift that made your heart say, "That's me," and take one small step this week: Invite someone to take one task off your plate Protect fifteen minutes of quiet and receive rest as a gift from God Send an honest text to a safe friend: "Hey, rough week. Can I call you?" Small and faithful beats big and never. Friend, you are not a machine, and you were never meant to be. Whether you serve from the pulpit, the nursery, the kitchen, or the front row, you are a beloved daughter of God first. If this episode encouraged you, we'd love for you to share it with another woman who serves in ministry and leave a review to help this podcast reach more pastors' and ministers' wives.    Resources Susan Belisle Facebook Page Thriving Pastor's Wife Facebook Group Instagram YouTube

13: Your Ministry Mindset: What Story Are You Telling Yourself?

Every woman in ministry has an inner story running in the background. "I have to keep everyone happy." "Nobody really understands what I'm carrying." "If I step back, everything will fall apart." Most of us never stop to ask whether those stories are actually true. In this episode of Thriving Pastor's Wife, Susan gently pulls back the curtain on the stories pastors' wives tell themselves about ministry, marriage, and even their own worth. You'll learn how to tell the difference between what happened and the story you attach to it, and how to bring your thoughts into alignment with God's truth. If you're a ministry wife who feels stuck, worn down, or alone, this biblical encouragement is for you. In This Episode Why the problem isn't that we have thoughts, but that we believe every thought we think The difference between a circumstance and the story we attach to it Story #1: "I have to be everything to everyone," and why God never asked you to be anyone's Savior Story #2: "If people are disappointed in me, I've done something wrong," and how healthy boundaries can disappoint unhealthy expectations Story #3: "I'm alone in this," and the difference between feeling alone and being alone Four questions to test whether the story you're telling yourself is true How to build a healthier, more truthful ministry mindset that leads to different choices and a different way of living A practical journaling exercise to help you rewrite the story Key Scriptures Galatians 6:5: "For each one will have to bear his own load." Galatians 1:10: "For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God?" Psalm 34:18: "The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." 2 Corinthians 12:9: "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Psalm 46:1: "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." Psalm 139:14: "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made." Romans 12:2: "Be transformed by the renewal of your mind." Reflective Question Whose approval has been writing the story of your ministry? Weekly Action Item Take out your journal and complete Susan's "What Story Am I Telling Myself?" exercise: The situation I'm struggling with is... The story I've been telling myself about it is... What I'm feeling because of that story is... What does God's Word say that is true? A more truthful story I can choose to believe is... Don't just write your new statement once. Speak it. Pray it. Write it. And return to it whenever the old story comes creeping back. Closing Friend, you may not be able to change everything happening around you in ministry, but you can become aware of the story you're telling yourself about it. And when that story doesn't line up with God's truth, you can choose a new one. Your identity is rooted in Christ, not in what people expect of you, your ministry role, or your mistakes. 12: What Actually Helps You Thrive in Ministry (Hint: It's Not a Spa Day)

Loneliness, burnout, church hurt, an unrelenting mindset of "keep everyone happy" — every ministry wife knows these struggles well. In this episode, Susan brings together everything this season has covered — mindset, identity, boundaries, connection, and Scripture — into one honest conversation about what actually helps women in ministry thrive. Thriving isn't about finding one thing that fixes everything; it's about biblical encouragement, healthy ministry rhythms, work life balance, and true friends all working together in a sustainable way. This episode introduces a simple four-part framework for building a life and leadership you can actually sustain. In This Episode Why thriving isn't the absence of difficulty — and what it means to thrive through hard, even painful, ministry seasons How mindset shapes a woman in ministry's whole experience, and the difference between living from your true self vs. your false self Letting Scripture bring real biblical encouragement, not just equipping you to encourage everyone else Why God's presence should be home, not just an emergency room — and what it means to create Sacred Space Why your physical and emotional well-being (Wholy Well) is part of stewardship, not separate from your spiritual life Overcoming loneliness by building Radiant Relationships and true friends who know the real you, not just the ministry version Why boundaries are biblical, and how they protect against burnout and create room for healthy ministry How thriving changes the way you lead — leading from identity instead of performance Susan's four-part Pathway to THRIVING: Sacred Space, Wholy Well, Radiant Relationships, and Leadership Lifestyle Key Scriptures Romans 12:2 — "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." Psalm 46:10 — "Be still, and know that I am God." Reflective Question Which of the four areas — Sacred Space, Wholy Well, Radiant Relationships, or Leadership Lifestyle — is God inviting you to grow in right now? Your Action Item This Week Write down the four words: Sacred Space, Wholy Well, Radiant Relationships, Leadership Lifestyle. Choose the one that needs your attention most, and take one small, faithful step toward it this week — not ten steps, just one. Closing You were never created simply to survive ministry — you were created to thrive in it. If today's episode brought you biblical encouragement, share it with another woman in ministry who needs to hear this message, and leave a review to help this podcast reach more pastors' wives and ministry wives.
