Personal Journey of Dr. Gilberto Lopes

In this episode of OncoInfluencer Series by OncoDaily TV, host Dr. Shushan Hovsepyan, Pediatric oncologist, Co-chair of SIOP GHN Research and Innovation Working group, SVP OncoDaily, sits down with Dr. Gilberto Lopes, Chief of the Division of Medical Oncology and Associate Director and Medical Director for International Programmes at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of Miami, to talk about about his personal journey in oncology, cancer research, global health equity, and leadership. Dr. Lopes shares how cancer and cancer care inaccessibility affected his family long before he became an oncologist. That experience became an important motivation for his work in cancer drug access and healthcare policy. Reflecting on his career, Dr. Lopes discusses his early research in Brazil, clinical training in Miami, years leading clinical trials in Singapore, and his role in expanding oncology services and research networks across Latin America. He also shares his work at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, including efforts to strengthen clinical research, education, and international oncology collaboration. The conversation explores his involvement with the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), his candidacy for UICC President-elect, and his leadership of the ATOM Coalition, an initiative dedicated to improving access to essential cancer medicines in low- and middle-income countries. Dr. Lopes discusses the coalition's progress, including its work with more than 40 partners across over 40 countries and the delivery of more than 1.3 million doses of quality-assured cancer medications. Beyond global health policy, Dr. Lopes reflects on his contributions to lung cancer research, including clinical trials that have helped advance immunotherapy and targeted treatments. He also discusses what meaningful leadership looks like, the importance of teamwork, and how he approaches balancing professional responsibilities with family life. For young oncologists and researchers, he shares advice on mentorship, preparation, recognizing opportunities, and building careers that can make a lasting difference for patients. From personal loss to global cancer leadership, this conversation explores why progress in oncology must be measured not only by scientific discoveries, but also by whether those discoveries reach the people who need them. The breast surgeon and global oncology advocate | Maira Caleffi

What happens when a breast surgeon realizes that treating individual patients is not enough to change cancer outcomes? In this episode of OncoInfluencer Series by OncoDaily TV, host Dr. Shushan Hovsepyan, Pediatric oncologist, Co-chair of SIOP GHN Research and Innovation Working group, SVP OncoDaily, speaks with Dr. Maira Caleffi, Founder and Chair of FEMAMA, Head of the Breast Unit and Prevention Programmes at Hospital Moinhos de Vento, Brazil. From her early interest in biochemistry and medicine to her specialized training in London and research in cancer genetics, Dr. Caleffi reflects on the experiences that shaped her career and inspired her to move beyond the operating room into patient advocacy, healthcare policy, and global cancer leadership. After returning to Brazil, she witnessed the challenges of late breast cancer diagnosis, unequal access to treatment, and limited patient participation in healthcare decisions. These experiences motivated her to establish IMAMA and later FEMAMA, bringing patient organizations together to advocate for women's rights and improvements in cancer care. She discusses how these efforts contributed to important policy changes, including Brazil's 60-day cancer treatment law, and how initiatives such as City Cancer Challenge are helping translate advocacy into practical improvements in healthcare delivery. The conversation also explores her involvement with the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), her commitment to advancing global cancer equity, and the challenges she faced as a woman in surgery and medical leadership. Dr. Caleffi shares personal reflections on balancing her clinical career, advocacy work, and family life, the books that have influenced her thinking, and the lessons she has learned throughout decades of working with patients and healthcare institutions. Looking toward the next generation, Dr. Caleffi encourages young oncologists to remain scientifically curious, maintain meaningful connections with their patients, and recognize that improving cancer outcomes often requires action beyond clinical practice. Her journey highlights the importance of transforming scientific knowledge into accessible care and ensuring that patients have a voice in the decisions that affect their lives. Support the show

From Tumor Immunology to Precision Oncology: Bispecific Antibodies, Liquid Biopsy & Translational Research | Dr. Karsten Michael Warwas

In this episode of OnCoffee, Vahe Grigoryan, Editorial Director of OncoDaily, speaks with Dr. Karsten Michael Warwas, a physician and researcher at Heidelberg University Hospital and the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg. Drawing on his background in biomedical sciences, immunology, and medicine, Karsten discusses the challenges of translating scientific discoveries into meaningful advances in cancer care. They explore the potential of bispecific antibodies and T-cell engagers in solid tumors, examining why promising laboratory findings can be difficult to reproduce in clinical practice. The conversation covers tumor heterogeneity, the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment, T-cell exhaustion, and the ongoing research needed to make these immunotherapies more effective. The discussion also turns to liquid biopsy and precision oncology, exploring how advances in molecular profiling are generating increasingly large amounts of tumor data—and why interpreting that information and translating it into actionable clinical decisions remain major challenges. Karsten reflects on the role of artificial intelligence in helping clinicians navigate complex data and the importance of ensuring that advanced diagnostics can benefit patients beyond highly specialized centers. Beyond the science, Karsten shares his journey from biomedical sciences in Brussels and immunology studies in London to medical training in Heidelberg. He reflects on the realities of academic medicine, the setbacks inherent in scientific research, the importance of perseverance, and the need to maintain a healthy balance between clinical work, research, and life outside medicine. And, of course, there is plenty of OnCoffee personality along the way, from a science-inspired coffee mug to conversations about scientific inspiration, career uncertainty, and the researchers he would most like to meet over a cup of coffee. #ONCOFFEE #TumorImmunology #PrecisionOncology Support the show
