  • Comedy

A darkly comic parody of the Horatio Alger myth and a savage satire of the American Revolution, The Memoirs of George Sperryhawke chronicles the rise of an ambitious orphan who mistakes cunning for wisdom and self-interest for patriotism. As Boston hurtles toward rebellion, George ascends from obscurity into the company of revolutionaries, demagogues, and cranks, only to discover that the making of a nation is every bit as absurd—and every bit as tragic—as the making of a man.
