09 - Izzy Lidsky: Photography, Ski Culture & Telling Stories From the Mountains

On this episode of Beyond the Bicycle, host Tyson Martin sits down with Izzy Lidsky, an outdoor photographer, writer, and storyteller based in Bend, Oregon. Izzy’s relationship with photography started in a high school darkroom, shooting 35mm and medium-format film and learning how an image comes to life long before photography became her career. Around the same time, she watched her first ski film. That changed everything. She fell in love with action sports storytelling and the idea that photography, writing, athletes, landscapes, and adventure could come together to tell stories about much more than the sport itself. Today, Izzy works as a freelance photographer and staff writer for POWDER Magazine, documenting skiing, mountain biking, outdoor culture, and the people and communities that give these pursuits meaning. Her work explores the human side of adventure, the experiences behind the images, the relationships built in the mountains, and the reasons people dedicate so much of their lives to being outside. Over the years, Izzy has worked with and contributed to some of the most recognized names in outdoor media and culture, including Red Bull Media House, Teton Gravity Research, FREESKIER Magazine, Sweet Protection, Outdoor Research, Hyperlite, Ripton Co., Curious Creatures, Trails Magazine, and Jackson Hole Snowboarder Magazine. In this conversation, we go beyond the photographs and talk about what it actually takes to build a creative life in the outdoor industry. We get into photography and writing, freelancing, working with athletes and brands, finding your own perspective, and why authenticity matters when you're telling stories about communities you're genuinely part of. In This Episode: • Discovering photography through film and the darkroom • Falling in love with ski films and action sports culture • Building a career as both a photographer and writer • Working with athletes, brands, and outdoor publications • Life as a staff writer for POWDER Magazine • Visual storytelling in skiing and mountain biking • The realities of freelancing in the outdoor industry • Finding your creative voice and perspective • The importance of authenticity in adventure storytelling • The people and communities behind outdoor sports • Why passion remains at the center of meaningful creative work At its core, this conversation is about following the things that genuinely excite you and finding a way to build a creative life around them. Because the best outdoor stories aren't simply about skiing a line, riding a trail, or capturing the perfect photograph. They're about the people who choose to spend their lives out there. 08 - Christa “C Funk” Funk: Inside Pipeline, Water Photography & Keep on Funkin’ On

Christa “C Funk” Funk: Inside Pipeline, Water Photography & Keep on Funkin’ On On this episode of Beyond the Bicycle, host Tyson Martin sits down with Christa “C Funk” Funk, one of the world’s most respected water photographers and a familiar presence in the lineup at the legendary Banzai Pipeline on Oahu’s North Shore. Christa has built her career by putting herself in places few photographers are willing or physically capable of going. Rather than documenting surfing safely from shore, she swims directly into the action. From small, playful days to the chaos and consequence of second and third reef Pipeline, Christa positions herself in the heart of one of the world’s most powerful surf breaks to create photographs that capture the beauty, athleticism, violence, and unpredictability of the ocean. Her work has been featured by Freesurf Magazine, Surfline, and surf publications and media outlets around the world. But Christa’s story started long before she became known for swimming into Pipeline with a camera. A graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy, Christa served aboard the Coast Guard Cutter RUSH in Hawaii. Combined with her background as a competitive swimmer, those years helped develop the ocean knowledge, physical ability, discipline, and composure that would later become essential to her career as a water photographer. Photography itself entered her life through a classroom assignment. What followed was an entirely different path. Today, Christa continues to push herself physically and creatively, training relentlessly so she can operate safely and confidently when Pipeline is at its most demanding. Her photography isn't simply about getting close to the action. It's about understanding the ocean, anticipating moments, respecting the athletes and environment, and recognizing the stories unfolding around her. In this conversation, we go beyond the photographs and talk about what it takes to build a life around something that demands this much commitment. We explore fear, preparation, resilience, creativity, faith, humor, storytelling, and the mindset required to keep swimming back into an environment where conditions can change in seconds. In This Episode: • Christa’s journey from Coast Guard officer to professional surf photographer • Finding photography through a classroom assignment • Life inside the lineup at Banzai Pipeline • Photographing from the water instead of the safety of shore • The physical and mental demands of water photography • Training and preparing for heavy ocean conditions • Understanding risk, fear, and decision-making in the water • Working with Freesurf Magazine, Surfline, and major surf publications • Why storytelling matters as much as capturing the action • The role of faith, humor, and resilience in Christa’s life • Capturing moments and perspectives few people will ever experience • Continuing to challenge yourself creatively and physically At its core, this conversation is about much more than surf photography. It’s about committing yourself to something difficult, earning the ability to be where you need to be, and continuing to show up even when the conditions both in the ocean and in life aren’t easy. Christa’s camera may capture the moment, but everything that happens before she presses the shutter is what makes those photographs possible. This is Christa “C Funk” Funk on Beyond the Bicycle. And as Christa would say: Keep on Funkin’ On! Beyond the Bicycle is proudly powered by Brodie Bicycles.

07 - Natalie Carriere: Adventure Photography, Mountain Life & Authentic Storytelling

On this episode of Beyond the Bicycle, host Tyson Martin sits down with Natalie Carriere, an adventure and commercial photographer whose work takes her deep into the mountains, onto remote productions, and alongside athletes pushing themselves in some of the most demanding environments imaginable. Natalie specializes in creating powerful visual stories for athletes, brands, events, and outdoor organizations. From remote alpine productions and backcountry expeditions to major sporting events and commercial campaigns, her photography is built around movement, environment, preparation, and authentic human experience. What makes Natalie's perspective unique is that she doesn't just photograph adventure. She lives it. As a skier, snowboarder, and mountain biker, Natalie spends much of her life in the same environments she documents. That firsthand experience gives her an understanding of the terrain, conditions, athletes, and split-second moments that can't simply be learned behind a camera. In this conversation, we go beyond the photographs to explore what it actually takes to build a creative career around adventure. We talk about working in unpredictable environments, photographing athletes in motion, collaborating with brands and production teams, adapting when conditions change, developing a professional workflow, and finding your own visual voice in an increasingly crowded creative industry. But like every conversation on Beyond the Bicycle, this episode is about more than the work. It's about building a life around the things you love, putting yourself in environments that challenge you, staying creative under pressure, and understanding that some of the best stories come from genuinely participating in the world you're trying to document. In This Episode: • Building a career in adventure and commercial photography • Photographing athletes in fast-paced outdoor environments • Storytelling through movement, light, and landscape • Working with brands, events, and production teams • The realities of remote shoots and alpine productions • Creativity under pressure and adapting to changing conditions • The connection between being an athlete and a photographer • Developing a professional workflow from concept to delivery • Finding your visual voice in a competitive industry • Why authentic storytelling matters more than ever • Building a creative life around adventure and the outdoors Whether you're a photographer, filmmaker, mountain biker, skier, snowboarder, outdoor athlete, or simply someone interested in the people who build their lives around creativity and adventure, this conversation offers a look at what happens when the person behind the camera is just as immersed in the experience as the people they're photographing. This is Natalie Carriere on Beyond the Bicycle. Beyond the Bicycle is proudly powered by Brodie Bicycles.

A 2023 Red Bull Illume Semi-Finalist, Brynne has quickly established herself as one of the most exciting emerging voices in adventure photography. 01 - Ben Tobin On Mountain Bike Photography to Stories That Matter

Before becoming one of the Pacific Northwest's most respected documentary photographers, Ben Tobin helped shape mountain bike culture from behind the lens. His photographs appeared in many of the sport's most influential magazines, documenting the athletes, personalities, and defining moments that helped establish modern mountain biking. But while bicycles opened the first chapter of Ben's career, they were never the final destination. Today, based in Spokane, Washington, Ben's work has evolved into something much deeper. His photography is dedicated to documenting the people, places, and stories that often go unseen. Through patience, trust, and genuine human connection, he creates images that challenge assumptions, foster empathy, and remind us that every person deserves to be seen with dignity. Whether you're a cyclist, photographer, creative, journalist, or simply someone who believes every person deserves to be seen, Ben's story is a powerful reminder that the most meaningful journeys don't always happen on two wheels, they happen in the moments when we choose to truly see one another.
