Josh Turek squared off Wednesday night in their first debate in the race to replace U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst, who is not seeking reelection. The candidates traded attacks over immigration, their records on bipartisanship, health care and the war with Iran. It is the first head-to-head debate in what is expected to be a closely watched Senate race. … In Carlisle, city leaders say they have identified what they believe caused the city’s water system to drain. After nearly a week without usable water, the city planned to move from a “Do Not Use” order to a boil advisory Thursday morning. The boil advisory will remain in place until water samples confirm the system is safe. Schools are also expected to reopen Thursday. … And there is a troubling intersection getting attention in Polk County. N.E. 56th Street and N.E. 94th Avenue, north of Bondurant, has recorded five crashes in the past five months, including two fatalities. The most recent victim was 73-year-old Linda Fristoe, who was killed last week. … Around the world, protests continue in France. Police fired tear gas at a high school in Paris after students erected barricades as part of nationwide protests. Dozens of demonstrations are planned Thursday. … Now, your weather. Today will be partly cloudy with a high of 73 and a low of 55. There is a 30% chance of rain. The two-day blaze killed between 200 and 300 people, destroyed more than 17,000 buildings and left about 100,000 people homeless. In 1945, Raytheon filed the first patent for what would become the microwave oven. And in 1956, the first enclosed shopping mall in the United States opened in a Minneapolis suburb. Southdale Mall was designed to give shoppers a warm, comfortable place to shop during those brutally cold Minnesota winters. … Now, a quick look at sports. The New York Yankees are out of the postseason after the Tampa Bay Rays completed a three-game sweep with a 4-3 victory Wednesday night. The game included a controversial moment in the sixth inning. Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe appeared to hit a game-tying two-run homer, but replay showed a fan had reached over the wall and interfered with the ball. The home run was overturned and changed to an RBI double. The Yankees could not complete the comeback and were eliminated from the American League Division Series. In the NFL, the Minnesota Vikings signed veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to their practice squad. The Vikings are 4-0 and are adding Beckham as they deal with injuries, including to star receiver Justin Jefferson. … Now for today’s mystery from the morning chuckle. The two candidates traded personal attacks over their records, backgrounds and qualifications with just four weeks remaining in the governor’s race. Lahn, a businessman seeking public office for the first time, repeatedly criticized Sand’s record as state auditor and portrayed him as a career politician. Sand defended his record and challenged Lahn over his ties to Kansas, questioning whether the Republican spends enough time in Iowa to lead the state. … Closer to home, Polk County leaders are exploring the possibility of creating a new downtown entertainment district around the Iowa Events Center. The Board of Supervisors approved a plan Tuesday to analyze the area around the Casey’s Center, EMC Expo Center and Community Choice Convention Center. … Authorities say a West Des Moines man faces four counts of attempted murder following Monday’s shooting on northbound Interstate 35 near the Bevington exit. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation says shots were reported around 3:30 p.m. … Around the state, officials have identified two people who died Saturday in a boating accident on the Mississippi River near Dubuque. The victims were 62-year-old Wayne Ameskamp of Dyersville and 61-year-old Michael Donahue of Bellevue. Three people were ejected after the boat struck an object. … Today marks the third anniversary of the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on Israel. Israelis are commemorating the attack, which killed about 1,200 people and resulted in 251 hostages being taken. The war that followed has devastated much of Gaza. … Now, let’s talk steak. Steak de Burgo is back in the news, and Jim Duncan reminds us that the story behind this Des Moines classic is considerably more interesting than simply putting garlic, butter and steak on a plate. The dish originated in Des Moines’ Francis Avenue neighborhood, a diverse immigrant community near Broadlawns Hospital and the city’s coal mines. Johnny Compiano and Vic Talerico are credited with creating the first Des Moines steak de Burgo. The name has a connection to the Spanish Civil War, and the story involves Italian and Spanish immigrants, political irony and a recipe that traveled across cultures. … On this date in history, 1913 brought the debut of the moving assembly line at Henry Ford’s Highland Park factory. The innovation dramatically reduced the time required to build a Model T and helped make automobiles affordable to ordinary consumers. In 1985, Lynette Woodard became the first female player for the Harlem Globetrotters. And on Oct. 7, 2001, the United States and its allies began military operations in Afghanistan following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Here is what is happening around central Iowa this morning. … A person is in custody following a stabbing Monday evening in Des Moines. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded around 6:30 p.m. to a report of a stabbing in the 100 block of Northwest Aurora Avenue. Deputies found an adult male with an apparent stab wound. The man was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. One person is in custody as the investigation continues. … There was another incident Monday involving gunfire, this one on Interstate 35 in Warren County. Iowa State Patrol says one person was injured and another person was taken into custody following what authorities called a shooting incident near the Bevington exit. Shots were fired around 3:45 p.m. At least one person was taken to a hospital, although authorities had not determined whether that person was shot. … Meanwhile, a school bus in southern Iowa had an unusual encounter Monday night. A Davis County Community Schools bus returning from a cross-country meet in Chariton hit a horse. The school district says there were no reportable injuries. Parents and guardians were notified, and the district thanked law enforcement, coaches and the driver for handling the situation calmly. The district did not provide an update on the horse. … In Bondurant, crews are beginning a project that will transform the city’s historic grain district into a community gathering space. Plans include an outdoor amphitheater, green space and an augmented-reality mural. The city says the area eventually will host concerts, art projects and other community events. … Now, let’s check the weather. Today should be sunny and warm, with a high of 78 and a low of 57. Carlisle residents are facing another day without water. City officials announced Sunday afternoon that the community would remain under a no-water order, while the Carlisle Community School District closed for a third consecutive day. Gov. Kim Reynolds said her office and the Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management are working with county emergency managers and Carlisle officials to restore water service. … In Ames, emergency crews are working to recover a truck that became submerged in water Sunday. Police were called shortly after noon to the 4500 block of Mortensen Road after reports of a vehicle in the water. Officers found one person inside the truck, which later became fully submerged with the person still inside. … In Des Moines, one man is hospitalized after an early Sunday shooting in the Court Avenue Entertainment District. Police officers on foot patrol heard gunshots near Fourth Street and Court Avenue shortly after 2 a.m. They found a 23-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds. … Around the state, a man has been arrested and charged with killing his grandfather in rural Black Hawk County. Deputies found 75-year-old Gale Anthony Mervin dead at a home Saturday evening and arrested 21-year-old Eric Paul O’Connell II. … Around the world, a Saudi-led coalition says its fighter jets are bombing Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen as forces of Yemen’s internationally recognized government launched a major offensive along the Red Sea coast. … Your weather: Sunshine today with a high of 70 and a low of 52. Residents should not use tap water until at least 8 a.m. today while crews work to refill the system. Mayor Dan Carver says the order could be lifted this morning, but that is not guaranteed. City crews and Des Moines Water Works employees worked overnight to locate and repair the break. … Meanwhile, over in Norwalk, there is a smell in the air — and it is not exactly the smell of fall. Residents have been dealing with an unpleasant sewer odor following the recent heavy rainfall. The Des Moines Metropolitan Wastewater Reclamation Authority says the rain caused wastewater to build up in the system. That increased flow moves through the sanitary sewer system and is stored in a large equalization basin on the south side of Norwalk. … All right. Let’s talk weather. And after all that rain, I think we have earned this forecast. Today will be sunny, with a high of 62 and a low of 48. There is a zero percent chance of rain. Saturday will be mostly sunny, with a high of 68 and a low of 53. And Sunday looks pretty much the same — mostly sunny, a high of 68 and a low of 47. Traditional grocery stores accounted for 72.2% of Americans’ food spending in 1999. By 2025, that number had dropped to 56.2%. In Carlisle, officials asked residents and businesses around 5 p.m. to stop using water immediately after a major water main break began draining the city’s water system. Crews were still trying to locate the break Wednesday evening. Once repairs are complete, the city will be under a boil-water advisory until further notice. Woodward also was dealing with water problems Wednesday. Residents should watch for updates from local officials about repairs and any water-use restrictions. … Meanwhile, rising rivers could affect roads in Dallas, Polk and Warren counties beginning today. Additional rain Wednesday night added to waterways already responding to recent rainfall. The Raccoon, Middle and North rivers are among those most susceptible to flooding. … In other news, one person died and three others were injured in a three-vehicle crash at Northeast 56th Street and Northeast 94th Avenue in Polk County. The sheriff’s office reported the fatality Wednesday evening. The person’s identity was being withheld pending notification of family. … Around Iowa, The U.S. Department of Justice has determined that the Cedar Rapids Community School District is complying with its 2022 settlement agreement involving seclusion and restraint practices affecting students with disabilities. In a Sept. 2 letter, the department said it was ending its monitoring of the district, and the agreement would terminate. The investigation began in 2020. … Now, to sports. In Major League Baseball, the New York Yankees eliminated the Boston Red Sox with a 9-2 victory Wednesday, advancing to face the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League Division Series. The Chicago White Sox also advanced after sweeping the Houston Astros in their wild-card matchup. It is Chicago’s first postseason series victory since winning the World Series in 2005. In the WNBA playoffs, Arike Ogunbowale scored a postseason-record 45 points to lead the Dallas Wings to a 108-100 overtime victory over the Golden State Valkyries. The mall’s sale occurred earlier this month, but the buyer was not identified until Tuesday. … Gov. Kim Reynolds has called a special legislative session in response to plans for a $15 billion steel mill in Iowa. Reynolds and other members of Iowa’s congressional delegation joined President Donald Trump at the White House Monday for the announcement that Mesabi Metallics plans to build the massive steel mill. … Iowa will receive about $2.4 million from a settlement involving Corteva Agriscience. Attorney General Brenna Bird announced Monday that the settlement stems from a Federal Trade Commission and multistate lawsuit alleging Corteva’s loyalty program violated monopoly laws and restricted the sale of lower-priced competing pesticides. … Around the world, Iran’s currency has fallen to another record low as the war in the Middle East continues to hurt the country’s economic stability. Traders in Tehran were exchanging more than 2.5 million rials for one U.S. dollar Tuesday. … Around the state, a former Cedar Rapids high school bowling coach has been sentenced to 17 years in prison after pleading guilty to charges involving the grooming and sexual exploitation of a minor. … And in national news, an attorney for Lindsay Clancy is now questioning whether she killed her three children. Callers falsely claim money is needed to secure a loved one’s release from jail. Officials remind residents that law enforcement agencies do not request payments over the phone. … Today’s food note comes from Jim Duncan, who highlights Iowa’s growing whole-hog barbecue culture. A recent event at West End Salvage in Webster City featured a wood-smoked hog prepared by Mary Ann’s Specialty Meats, proving that sometimes great barbecue is worth gathering around. … In sports news, the New York Giants acquired Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy in a trade Monday, sending Minnesota a 2027 fifth-round draft pick in exchange for the 2024 first-round selection.
