Becoming Untamed Podcast

Jeremy Cameron and Grace Laubenthal

Becoming Untamed is a podcast about designing a life that actually feels like yours. At 49 and 21, Jeremy and Grace are becoming untamed in very different ways. Together, they have deep, honest conversations about trusting yourself, questioning expectations, choosing your own path, and becoming who you actually are. This isn’t a podcast about having all the answers. It’s about curiosity, real stories, different perspectives, and the questions we carry but rarely say out loud. New episodes every week.

Your Body Asked You to Rest (Now It's Telling You)

What is your body telling you that you keep overriding? I was sixteen when the neck, back, and stomach pain started. I was athletic, I ate well, I went to the doctors, and months of tests found nothing. Years later, doing the work, I connected the dots: a lot of it was me holding on to trauma and stories and patterns. Now I notice it in my low back, my stomach, my chest, and I release it by moving: a walk with Jer on the phone the morning a flood of anxiety hit, and the offer on my best friend's house came the next day. (Grace) At the end of my marriage I had chronic stomach issues I didn't connect to the stress and anxiety I wasn't dealing with. I've been the guy who worked 120 hours a week and slept at the office. I pushed past in the gym, overrode the rest my body asked for, and got sick for it, until my body stopped asking and started telling. This round of my fitness has been the easiest it's ever been, and I didn't have to go extreme. (Jeremy) This episode is about what happens in our bodies: the body holding on to what the mind won't look at, getting curious instead of critical about a sensation, releasing through movement, the difference between sore from a workout and sore from something emotional, burnout as a way of avoiding your inside world, why a rest day every week isn't a reward, and what to do when you don't know what you want or need: slow down, breathe with your feet on the floor, and trust the first answer. Grace's one thing: get very, very curious about any feeling in your body. The minute she started getting curious instead of critical is when the doors opened. Jeremy's one thing: if you're brand new to this, maybe you don't get the message at first. Just feel the sensation. Make a time in the morning or the evening to see what your body is feeling, and maybe write it down. Tell us in the comments: where in your body do you feel it, and what have you been pushing past?

When Your Environment Decides Who You Are

What happens when the room decides how you feel? A family vacation. I was late to dinner because I had to write an offer, my family said they were disappointed, and I let it ruin me. That's when I realized I was letting my environment dictate how I was showing up, lessening who I was to meet people where they were at, and giving my power away to the situation. (Grace) A few years ago I was supposed to go to the Bahamas and the whole world shut down the week I was meant to leave. I've had the "if I just had this trip, this group, this amount of money, then I'd be happy" moment, and the second I think it, I've handed how I feel over to my environment. (Jeremy) This episode is about overcoming your environment, inner and outer: the people around you, the place you live, and your own emotional home. We get into what it means to be in the driver's seat of how you feel, how to stay in your own energy around people whose energy is different from yours (know your own energy, set an energetic guard, get curious and don't carry it), the "return to sender" practice for energy that isn't yours, letting go of expectations and outcomes, why "I'm not for everybody" is good news, and Jeremy's three-step framework: catch, choose, change. Grace's one thing: when you overcome your environment, you are the one setting the temperature. Jeremy's one thing: take a piece of paper, draw a line down the middle, and write who am I on one side and what's my environment on the other. Then one small thing this week to be you wherever you are. Tell us in the comments: where in your life is the room setting the temperature for you?

Whose permission are you waiting for?

You only need permission from one person, and it is you. This week Grace and I ask whose permission you are waiting for, and what changes when you stop waiting. I have looked around to see what everyone else was doing before I moved. I have asked a mentor what he would do if he were me, when the better question was what I would do if I were me. Grace started her real estate career on a team, doing what the agents around her did, and only later saw she had been asking for permission when what she wanted was a perspective. Together we get into the difference between asking for a perspective and asking for permission, why waiting on someone else's yes turns into resentment (and who you actually resent), the boat you cannot steer until the motor is running, why maybe is a no, the red flags in anyone who wants to be the authority on your life, and the day I walked into a friend's house and took the home I have now without asking anyone if it was a good idea. Grace's one thing: you only need permission from yourself, and you do not need anyone else's validation. Mine: other people's wisdom is a great launching pad, as long as it lands and aligns with you. When it does not, thank them for sharing, and let them keep it. The question for the week: what is one thing you have been waiting for permission to do, and whose yes were you waiting for? What if you never lost yourself?

Coming home to yourself is remembering who you already are. This week Grace and I ask what it means to come home to yourself, and how you find your way back when you have drifted. At the end of my marriage I had no idea who I was, what I liked, or what I wanted. Rediscovering that was my first trip home, and I have made the trip many times since. Two Marches ago Grace sat at an event in Mexico with her journal open and realized she did not know who she was either. She told a friend she was having an identity crisis. Her friend said, "Words matter. You are having an identity awakening." Together we get into how you start to sound like the people you spend your time with, the three steps I use to come back to myself (awareness, choice, change), why everyone wants change and few people want to change, what shifted when Grace admitted she was doing the work and secretly did not believe she could have what she wanted, and why calm felt wrong to her body after years in fight or flight. Grace's one thing: you remember who you are, and there are many ways to remember. Dancing, singing, talking, the people you love. Mine: awareness, choice, change. You choose when you change, how much you change, and whether you change at all. The question for the week: what is one thing you would do to come home to yourself, and do you believe you can have it? New episodes every Tuesday. If this one sounded like your life, send it to someone who needs to hear it.
