Squirrel AT MY THROAT

Squirrel At My Throat is based on my book by the same name.  The subtitle is "Living and Dying Unconventionally in a Conventional World".  My book is a memoir, primarily devoted to portraying my son's cancer experience, but I raise so many other topics in the course of the book which I feel merit much more discussion as well as examination from a wide variety of perspectives, including the importance of family, how young adults deal with cancer, the state of cancer treatment, mental health, the afterlife, cancel culture, drugs, the state of education, grief, bereaved parenting, the flaws of many societal institutions, music, raising boys, the importance of family, medical freedom, vaccination, climate change, digital currency, digital ID, transgenderism etc. etc. etc.  Many of the topics that I discuss will emerge organically from the current issues of the day as well as from the content of my book.  My book is available two ways: https://books.friesenpress.com/store/title/119734000137473637/Tanja-Zientara-Squirrel-At-My-Throat or https://www.amazon.ca/portal/customer-reviews/1525581252/ref=cm_cr_dp_d_show_all_top?_encoding=UTF8&ie=UTF8&reviewerType=all_reviews By the way, the opening song is titled, "Me, You and Labatt Blue", written and performed by my deceased son and his band.

Part 5 in my series on Public Education in Ontario: A chat with a mental health advocate

In this episode, I talk with Jeff Blomquist, a mental health therapist, a mentor for youth as well as an advocate for the poor and disenfranchised.  He adds that he is a poet and a philosopher in his spare time. My chat with Jeff is particularly timely in light of the fact that our Minister of Education has rolled out a new mental health program for schools across the province. To say that I'm cynical about their sudden concern for mental health is beyond an understatement, especially in light of the fact that the schools were and in some sense still are largely responsible for the abysmal mental health of our children and youth. Rather than addressing their own failures, the Minister deflects with some superficial band-aid solution and thereby yet again fails to address the roots of the problem like the lock-downs, school closures, the travesty of on-line learning, their despicable implementation of medical apartheid in their schools, their ongoing segregation of children into identity groups, the sexualization of students, their confusing gender policy, their lack of discipline, the bullying (not only from students but from the administration and teachers themselves), their gaslighting, their indoctrinating curriculum, their lack of attendance or late policies, the lack of common decency, the irradication of academic standards, their commitment to socially engineering and radicalizing our students into activists as opposed to confident individuals who are armed with academic and technical skills provided to them by a well-functioning education system.  I could go on and on. I remember when I called up Western University, desperately seeking help for my son who had been forced into on-line learning in 2020.  The powers that be suggested that my son get mental health help.  I said that he didn't need counselling; he needed to be in class, learning with actual professors and interacting with other students.  It is amazing how out of touch, ignorant and plain stupid the people running the show actually are. Is this system worth salvaging or should we just flush it all down the toilet and start again?

Episode 2 on the Ontario Education System: A chat with an experienced teacher

In this episode, the second in my series on the Ontario education system, I speak with Matthew Greeson, my husband, who has been a science and math teacher for the past thirty years. Matthew talks about the many positive experiences that he has had in education, but also laments the many problems within the system which might prove to be its downfall. I would love to get your feedback.  Please email me at tanjazientara@protonmail.com.  If you disagree with me, please tell me why.  I would love to interview you for future podcasts.  I don't believe in cancelling those with opposing opinions. A highly insightful perspective on child loss from a bereaved mom

In this podcast, I interviewed Traci Perott, a truly remarkable bereaved mom with an incredible story.  Traci courageously talks about giving birth to quadruplets, two of whom passed away shortly after birth and two who lived on with innumerable health complications.  One of her wonderful sons died at the age of seventeen after years of struggling with complications from birth.  Traci lovingly describes her son as well as both the joy and pain that comes with mothering such a medically fragile child.  Almost ten years after his passing, she still struggles with her grief, but is nonetheless profoundly grateful for her remaining son, a feisty young man who is also physically compromised, but who is determined to live as fully as he can. We all need to hear these powerful stories.  The lives of bereaved parents are not for the faint of heart; they serve to inspire us to be grateful for everything that we have, leaving us gobsmacked by the courage, tenacity and resilience of people who have been dealth some of themost difficult blows that life can deliver.  Quite honestly, this woman puts me and my own attitude to shame. Here is the link to the article about Traci's fertility doctor:https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/ontario-fertility-doctor-banned-indefinitely-from-practising-after-being-found-guilty-of-endangering-two-patients You can find my book, Squirrel at my Throat, on Amazon or through Friesen Press

My first episode and first conversation with a bereaved parent

This is my first podcast episode from back in 2023.  I am having to repost everything because my employer forced me to take down my podcast back in 2024.  I am now retired and will do as I please.    For my first episode, I chose to interview a father, Moe, who lost his almost 17 year old son to cancer. This dad describes how his son discovers his cancer, the treatment he underwent and the horrors that both this young man and  his father experience in the cancer world as well as the impact his son's cancer treatment and untimely demise have on his family.    This father powerfully and heartwrenchingly details how the medical system failed his family not only due to the COVID protocols which interfered/disrupted his son's cancer treatment, but due to the failures in the cancer world in general.    Moe talks about the medical system's blind commitment to treatment protocols that don't necessarily work, the refusal to acknowledge or explore alternate therapies and their refusal to accept accountability for their errors as well as the tragic abandonment of parents who are left stressed out and bewildered by a system that does not care about either them or the patient in their care.     Moe talks about how the College of Physicians and Surgeons or agencies which are supposed to help those who feel dissatisfied with their medical care either gaslights parents/patients or ignores their concerns.  He points out that such agencies are a facade, set up only to placate patients, making them feel that they have resources or people to turn to to support them in their trials and difficulties when they really have no intention of providing any actual help.  Further to that, these agencies will often protect their own members at all costs, no matter how appalling their behaviour.  Agencies which are supposed to provide recourse for patients who have felt jilted by the system are ultimately designed to protect themselves and their own interests as opposed to admitting to any accountability for the failures of the institutions that they are supposed to hold accountable.    Moe further speaks to the fact that in British Columbia, an individuals has no right to seek wrongful death charges in a court of law unless the person who has wrongfully died or who has died as a result of negligence is a breadwinner. Since Moe's son was only a teenager and certainly not a breadwinner, wrongful death charges don't apply, leaving one to believe that the only individual who has value is an individual who represents some kind of material or financial worth.     The BC Wrongful Death Law Reform Society’s goal is to modernize BC’s wrongful death laws, which unlike other provinces, currently denies justice to the surviving family members of children, seniors, the disabled, or anyone who wasn’t considered a breadwinner with dependents, when killed by the careless or intentional acts of another.   https://intheirname.ca/

A Terminal Cancer Diagnosis? Not on this mother's watch.

In this episode, I speak with Millie Spasic, engineer, but, more importantly, a mother, who did everything in her power to fight for her then 5 year old daughter, Keira,  after Millie was told in 2018 that Keira had glioblastoma, a mostly fatal brain cancer.  Refusing to accept that her daughter wouldn't be around for her next birthday let alone become a grandma, Millie began a deep dive into the world of alternative cancer treatments which she credits with her daughter's anomalous survival eight years later. * Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a high-grade glioma that arises from the brain’s supportive tissue, known as glial cells. It is an aggressive tumor that rapidly affects nearby healthy brain tissue. GBM is challenging to treat. Approximately 65 percent of GBM cases appear in the cerebral hemispheres, which control higher functions like speech, movement, thought, and sensation. They can also develop in other parts of the brain that identify sensations such as temperature or that control balance and motor function.Diagnosis typically happens in children between five and nine years old. GBM occurs in boys and girls equally.Symptoms of Childhood Glioblastoma Multiforme Most glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) symptoms result from increased pressure within the head. Other symptoms arise from the tumor's specific location, growth rate, and associated inflammation. Symptoms can develop slowly over time or begin very suddenly. The most common symptoms include: Headache and lethargy (generally upon awakening in the morning).Seizures, depending on tumor type and location.Compression of surrounding brain structures. Depending on the location, this can cause weakness and other motor dysfunction, hormonal abnormalities, or changes in behavior or thought processes. How We Treat Childhood Glioblastoma Multiforme Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) treatments may include: Surgery: The first treatment is usually surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible. We use advanced techniques to maximize tumor removal, such as intraoperative MRI (in which surgeons can visualize the tumor as they operate). It is challenging to completely remove most high-grade gliomas because they tend to affect nearby healthy tissues.Radiation therapy: We use high-energy waves from a specialized machine to damage or shrink tumors. Your child also may receive precisely targeted and dosed radiation to eliminate any cancer cells left behind after surgery. Radiation therapy can help control the local growth, which can increase survival in high-grade gliomas.Chemotherapy: We may use chemotherapy, a drug treatment that aims to destroy or shrink cancer cells, before surgery to help shrink the tumor. However, chemotherapy hasn’t been shown to increase survival rates in children with GBM.Unfortunately, the prognosis for children with GBM is poor. Our Pediatric Advanced Care Team (PACT) offers supportive treatments that help children’s quality of life and promote comfort and healing. What is the Gerson therapy? The Gerson therapy has been used by some people to treat cancer and other diseases. It is based on the role of minerals, enzymes, and other dietary factors. There are 3 key parts to the therapy: Diet: Organic fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to give the body plenty of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and other nutrients. The fruits and vegetables are low in sodium (salt) and high in potassium.Supplementation: The addition of certain substances to the diet to help correct cell metabolism (the chemical changes that take place in a cell to make energy and basic materials needed for the body's life processes).Detoxification: Treatments, including enemas, to remove toxic (harmful) substances from the body. The medical-industrial complex is a term describing the vast, interconnected network of for-profit healthcare corporations, pharmaceutical companies, medical device manufacturers, insurance providers, and healthcare facilities that supply medical products and services. The phrase draws a parallel to the military-industrial complex to highlight how healthcare and wellness are heavily influenced by profit motives. https://kidskickingcancer.ca/ - a support group for kids dealing with cancer Rick Simpson Oil (RSO) is made from the cannabis (marijuana) plant and gets attention online from people who claim it treats cancer There are many doctors who believe that cancer is a metabolic, not a genetic disease.  Much has been written about this subject. It provides access to over 40 million citations and abstracts spanning biomedical literature, life sciences, behavioral sciences, and bioengineering.  https://www.howtostarvecancer.com/about-jane/  Find out more about Jane Mclelland and her remarkable cancer story Metformin is a first-line prescription medication primarily used alongside diet and exercise to lower blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. It works by decreasing sugar production in the liver, reducing intestinal sugar absorption, and improving the body's sensitivity to insulin (It has also been successfully repurposed to treat cancer) Drug repurposing, or drug repositioning, is the process of finding new therapeutic uses for existing, FDA-approved medications. Because these drugs already have established safety profiles, this strategy bypasses the lengthy, high-risk traditional discovery stages, making it a faster and more cost-effective way to treat unmet medical needs.  The Care Oncology Clinic (COC) offers a personalized, metabolic adjunctive cancer treatment protocol meant to be used alongside conventional standard-of-care. They utilize a specific combination of repurposed, well-understood medications that target cancer cell metabolism to enhance treatment efficacy and improve patient quality of life  Fenbendazole is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic medication primarily used in veterinary medicine to treat gastrointestinal parasites like roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms in animals. In conversation with Larry Farquharson: Former teacher librarian and ardent critic of the Thames Vally District School Board

In this episode, I sit down to talk with former teacher librarian at Beal Secondary School in London, Ontario.  Larry Farquharson discusses the persecution he received by the media and his employer for his COVID protocol criticisms, but, even more significantly, his opposition to the removal and destruction of 10 000 books out of a collection of 17000 at the library, a dispute which lead to his removal from the classroom and, ultimately, to his retirement.  However, our conversation goes beyond censorship; we speak about the state of the world and how it needs to be changed. https://lfpress.com/news/local-news/board-trustees-say-mass-removal-of-beal-library-books-was-never-disclosed https://rantagainstthemachine.substack.com/.../open.. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/london/beal-library-old-book-purge-9.7040273 https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/audio/9.7039568 https://pub-london.escribemeetings.com/filestream.ashx?DocumentId=86412 https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/london/beal-teacher-masks-1.5739327 https://www.ontario.ca/page/thames-valley-district-school-board-financial-investigation https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/london/audit-shows-how-promotions-and-pay-bumps-contributed-to-tvdsb-s-16m-deficit-1.7538582 https://lfpress.com/news/local-news/whats-ahead-for-the-thames-valley-school-board-after-painful-year-of-scandal https://open.spotify.com/episode/6h09GstHfRMBPARHsMxG7Q https://propagandainfocus.com/author/mh2_tapq372ilj/ https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0lgioHvio9w&list=PL7_Yf1dNI7jTfi4wtjzCBUPolt-ol6Evo&index=1&pp=iAQB0gcJCUwLAYcqIYzv https://unlimitedhangout.com/author/whitney-webb/ https://firstfreedoms.ca/freedom-under-fire-the-cost-of-censorship-in-canadian-schools-a-librarians-stand-for-intellectual-freedom-interview-with-larry-farquharson/ Bill C-9 (the Combatting Hate Act) amended the Criminal Code to create new offences for intimidating people and obstructing access to religious or cultural spaces, define "hatred", and ban the public display of certain hate and terrorist symbols. It received Royal Assent on June 18, 2026. [1, 2] The legislation sparked major controversy across multiple sectors: Religious Freedom Concerns: Conservative politicians, religious groups, and civil liberties advocates heavily criticized the bill for removing the long-standing "good-faith religious opinion" defence from the Criminal Code. Critics argued this created a risk of criminalizing legitimate religious teachings, sermons, or the quoting of sacred texts if interpreted as promoting hatred. [1, 2, 3, 4]Threat to Peaceful Protest: Civil liberties organizations, including the Canadian Civil Liberties Association and the Canadian Bar Association, warned that vague language defining "obstruction" and "fear" could trammel Charter rights by criminalizing peaceful protests, labor pickets, and legitimate political dissent. [1, 2, 3]Law Enforcement Overreach: Advocacy and labour groups argued the broad language granted police excessive discretionary power. Historically, this level of subjectivity raises fears of over-policing and disproportionate enforcement within Indigenous, Black, and racialized communities. [1, 2]Government Rushing the Process: Critics condemned the federal government for rushing the bill through the justice committee and truncating parliamentary debate to ensure the law's passage. CBA National Magazine Larry's letter of resignation: "William Tucker Director of Education Thames Valley District School Board Dear Mr. Tucker, As a consequence of my attempt to bring clarity, public accountability and transparency to my area of expertise in a public secondary school Library context, I have been punished on multiple fronts, ostensibly in an attempt to silence me, and to force me into obedience and compliance. When confronted with this level of interference detrimental to the foundational precepts of educating children and youth entrusted to our care to become independent, literate, critical thinkers and doers, I will neither be silenced nor forced or extorted or intimidated into ‘compliance.’ What follows is a further accounting of the events contributing to compelling me to defend school Libraries, and more importantly, the protection of fundamental rights including the freedom to read, and the resulting attempts by the board and school administrations to trounce on those rights. While I enjoyed the bulk of my career and the interaction with students, the past five years contending with meddlesome and progressively ill-equipped, uninspiring, often unskilled and lacking leadership qualities and most importantly ideologically-driven rather than pedagogically-driven administrators has definitely put a damper on things. If anyone has been paying attention, TVDSB has been in the news seemingly almost daily, and not for good reasons. This board doesn’t need me to “disparage” or bring harm to its reputation…the former and present ‘senior administration’ (as it likes to call itself) and its obedient enforcers in many school administrator offices has achieved a level of internal and external disrepute and distrust quite spectacularly all on its own. In short, I believe TVDSB is structurally terminally corrupted, and beyond redemption. Effective immediately I am retired and no longer an employee of TVDSB. I have no interest in continuing any working relationship with this organization and in accordance with the Collective Agreement, Article L7.01, this is my official retirement notice. While I acknowledge the convention and preference may have been the beginning of the month for submitting an intent to retire, I see no compelling reason for granting such a courtesy given the aggregate and ‘aggravating’ circumstances described below. Kind regards, Larry"
