Commander's Corner - Episode 19 - Gary with Watt Talent Solutions

In this episode of Commander’s Corner, host Bill Monreal sits down with Dr. Gary Kustis of Watt Talent Solutions, an organizational psychologist who helps businesses make better people decisions through leadership coaching, team development, and talent assessment. Together they use Star Trek as a lens on leadership, technology, and the future of work. Key Themes & Takeaways: Organizational Health in Small and Family Businesses: Dr. Gary shares how he works with companies from 2 to 75 people, and why healthy teams, clear communication, and good people decisions matter as much as strategy. The conversation touches on Patrick Lencioni’s The Advantage and Bill’s own experience growing up in a family funeral home business. Star Trek Leadership Styles: Janeway, Picard, Kirk, Archer, Jellico, and Sisko each show a different way to lead. The two compare their strengths and blind spots, from a startup-style captain to the “by the book” approach, and what each looks like in a real workplace. AI as a Colleague, Not Just a Tool: Data, the Doctor, and the exocomps raise a question that is no longer science fiction: how should people relate to intelligent technology? They discuss whether AI should ever be allowed to refuse a task, and why important decisions need a human in the loop. What AI Can and Can’t Do: Large language models work with words, but much of human communication isn’t words. Bill and Dr. Gary talk about the limits of today’s AI, and about why keeping human judgment involved matters. Bringing AI Into the Workplace: Introducing AI is a people challenge as much as a technology one. They cover reassuring employees, being transparent about change, and treating AI as a force multiplier so people can focus on higher-value work. Bill also shares how Monreal IT has leaned into AI. Automation, Job Displacement, and What Comes Next: From the original series’ M-5 computer to the horse-and-buggy-to-automobile shift, history offers perspective on today’s fears about automation. The two close by imagining a future where creativity matters more than ever. Whether you’re a business owner, a leader, or a Trekkie, this episode will give you something to think about before the next time you take the conn. Commander's Corner - Episode 18 - Sean with Hemisphere Talent Solutions

In this episode of Commander’s Corner, host Bill Monreal sits down with Sean Larkin of Hemisphere Talent Solutions, a Lake County native, for a conversation about why finance and accounting talent is so hard to find and what business owners can do about it. Key Themes & Takeaways: Why Accounting Roles Are So Hard to Fill: Sean explains that unemployment for accounting professionals, from bookkeepers up to CFOs, is currently around 1 to 2%, so every company is pulling from the same small talent pool. He also points to the return-to-office push (which limits hiring to roughly a 30 to 40 mile radius), fewer CPAs coming out of college, and a statistic that 75 to 77% of CPAs will be retirement-age eligible within the next 10 years. Smaller companies of 10 to 200 employees often feel it most, since they need to grow but can’t match larger firms’ pay. The Hidden Cost of Being Understaffed: Burnout comes first, followed by lower morale and resentment when teams are asked to “pull together” month after month with no end in sight. Sean’s advice: a staffing gap becomes a business risk “yesterday,” so plan about three months ahead and build succession plans before someone gives notice. A Different Approach: South African Chartered Accountants: Hemisphere connects U.S. companies with vetted accountants in South Africa, who work remotely as an extension of the client’s team rather than a replacement for it. Sean describes South African chartered accountants as rigorously trained, often with Big Four experience, English-speaking, and only about six hours ahead of the East Coast, giving clients a “second shift” that picks up their early morning and late-night hours. Hemisphere acts as the employer of record, a general manager in Johannesburg vets the talent, and the client keeps control over the day-to-day work and security. Work ranges from bookkeeping and auditing up to controller-level tasks. Making Remote Teammates Part of the Team: Communication is everything. Sean shares how he’s learned to overcommunicate across email, Teams, WhatsApp, and LinkedIn, and how regular progress check-ins help both client and candidate. Hire, Contract, or Extend Your Team? Bill and Sean discuss how to decide: start with budget, then look at team morale and organizational health (Bill recommends The Advantage by Patrick Lencioni). If a role has been open for 30 days, it’s time to change your approach. They also talk about defining roles with an EOS-style accountability chart and being honest about what you need versus what you want. Looking Ahead: AI will keep reshaping the workforce, from applicant tracking and résumés to developer roles. Sean’s advice: adapt, listen to your employees and customers, and take care of those two groups first. Commander's Corner - Episode 17 - Kat & Dogs Ohio

In this episode of Commander’s Corner, host Bill Monreal sits down with Kat, owner of Kat & Dogs Ohio, a professional pet care business serving Willoughby, Ohio. Kat shares how she turned a lifelong gift of caring for shy and sensitive pets into a business, why professional credentials matter in an unregulated industry, and how Fear Free techniques help even the most anxious animals. Key Themes & Takeaways: At-Home Care for Shy and Sensitive Pets: Kat started her business in 2013 to offer the comfort care that kennels and vet clinics often can’t, especially for cats, shy pets, and animals with medical needs. Like people in a strange hotel, pets can shut down, stop eating, and get sick when they’re taken out of their routine, so she brings the care to them. Why Credentials Matter: Pet sitting is largely unregulated, so anyone can call themselves a pet sitter. Kat explains how she holds herself to a higher standard through Pet Sitters International (PSI), her Certified Professional Pet Sitter (CPPS) designation, Fear Free certification, and a vet registration, along with ongoing continuing education, insurance, and bonding. She also covers PSI’s updated global standards and why knowing what to do in an emergency is part of the job. Fear Free Care in Action: Kat explains the Fear Free approach: positive reinforcement, treats, and moving at the pet’s pace. She shares the story of a cat who once needed sedation at the vet for nail trims. After a year and a half of trust-building at home, the same cat now runs to greet her and gets a trim in 5 to 10 minutes. Using Technology to Run a Small Business: Kat describes how she moved from pen and paper to the Time to Pet platform during COVID. Clients now manage their own profiles, vaccination records, scheduling, and payments, with automated reminders when records expire. Community Involvement: Kat gives back through the Willoughby Farmers Market, Artsfest, the local chamber, and volunteering in the kitchen for Lake County Council on Aging’s Meals on Wheels program. Advice for Hiring a Pet Sitter: Do your research. Ask whether the sitter is insured and bonded, check Google reviews and references, ask about education and contracts, and make sure you meet the person in your home before they care for your pets. Don’t just hire any “pet lover” off a gig app. Find Kat at katndogsohio.com (that’s Kat with a K), and on Facebook and Instagram at Kat & Dogs Ohio. Commander's Corner - Episode 16 - Kim with FastSigns Mentor

In this episode of Commander's Corner, host Bill Monreal sits down with Kim, owner of FastSigns of Mentor, for a relaxed, question-card conversation about her path from art school to running a local sign shop, and what three decades in the sign industry have taught her. Key Themes & Takeaways: From Graphic Design to Business Owner: Kim grew up in Northeast Ohio and studied graphic arts at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. She walks through her 30-year career: starting at a print shop, moving into graphic design, sales, and management at FastSigns locations (including a stint in Washington state), and eventually buying the Mentor franchise from a retiring owner. She's now owned it for 11 years. Her advice for learning the business is simple: she knew how signs were made, which made her a better salesperson. The Reality of Running a Small Business: Kim shares what she's learned about protecting thin margins, accounting for rent, insurance, and payroll instead of just marking up materials, and why process matters. She also tells the story of her most satisfying project, replacing a large freeway sign set in a steep valley, which took scaffolding crews, a pickup truck, and creative problem-solving to pull off. Advice for Local Entrepreneurs: Her top tips for anyone starting out: save a cushion of money before you launch, because early business is rarely steady, and network constantly. And her favorite line: "A building with no sign is a sign of no business." She also explains why supporting local businesses matters, and why she sees other Lake County sign shops as both competitors and allies. Life Beyond the Shop: The conversation covers Kim's 27-year marriage (it started with a blind date at a Friday's), balancing family and a business, her membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution, her deep Northeast Ohio roots, and why she and Bill both think this is a great place to live and work. Find FastSigns of Mentor on Tyler Boulevard, between Routes 615 and 306, or online at fastsigns.com/292.
