It means the old roadmap doesn’t necessarily lead where it used to. The American Dream was never supposed to mean everybody follows the exact same path. It’s about having the opportunity to build something better — whether that means owning a home, starting a business, learning a trade, changing careers, creating something of your own, or simply having enough control over your life that somebody else doesn’t get to decide what success looks like for you. On the morning of September 11, he was supposed to be inside the Pentagon, sitting beside his friend and colleague Gerry Moran after the morning intelligence brief. But he was running late. A phone call moved their meeting to 1:00 p.m. At 9:37:46 a.m., American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon. Gerry never made it to one o’clock. Tug did. In this deeply personal episode of Olde Salty Bastards – The Show, Tug looks back on the people he knew and worked with who were lost that morning, the 184 people killed in the attack on the Pentagon, and the passengers and crew of United Flight 93 who fought back before the aircraft came down near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. This episode is not about replaying the images everyone has already seen a thousand times. It is about the people. The coworkers. The friends. The service members. The civilians. The passengers. The crew. The families who never got another phone call, another dinner, another birthday, or another ordinary day together. September 11 happened in New York.     44 A Day: The Next Mission — Part 3 Part 1 was about why veterans drift. Part 2 was about keeping somebody alive through the night. Part 3 asks the question almost nobody talks about afterward: What are you staying alive for? Because survival is not the finish line. It is the starting line. In the final chapter of the 44 A Day trilogy, TUG talks about rebuilding purpose after military service, trauma, loss, divorce, addiction, isolation, and everything else that can leave a veteran feeling like the mission ended and nobody bothered to issue another one. And sometimes the next mission does not arrive with a dramatic speech. Sometimes it looks like a busted lawnmower. A guy we will call Dale hit bottom after leaving the military. Drinking. Divorce. Isolation. Then one day he fixed a neighbor’s mower. One mower became another. Then a weed eater. Then a generator. Eventually Dale’s garage became the place where broken things got fixed. Including, in a way, broken people. Because one younger veteran eventually showed up carrying a chainsaw that did not need fixing. He came because he had heard Dale’s garage was a place where a guy could stand without having to explain himself. That is the point of this episode. Your next mission may look small. It may look ordinary. But purpose, structure, service, movement, brotherhood, professional help, and posttraumatic growth can turn surviving into actually living again.     USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN: SUCK IT UP, BUTTERCUP More than 260 days deployed. More than 200 days without a normal port call. Reports of food shortages, hygiene problems, broken equipment, exhausted sailors, and morale issues aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln have turned the carrier into the latest political shitstorm. Tug has a different perspective. He served aboard USS America (CV-66) in the 1990s, back when there was no Wi-Fi, no FaceTime, barely a f*****g light in your rack, port calls could disappear without warning, and sometimes Navy chow became its own gastrointestinal weapons program. In this episode, Tug takes on the Lincoln controversy, the difference between legitimate negligence and ordinary military hardship, the outrage crowd that suddenly thinks deployment is supposed to be comfortable, and the politicians using sailors as ammunition. He also gets into his own carrier stories, including a canceled Persian Gulf port call after transiting the Suez Canal, JP-5 flavored water, bug juice, MREs, the legendary chili-mac chemical attack, and Lance Corporal Zachary Mayo—the Marine who went overboard from USS America, survived roughly 36 hours at sea, and later became the subject of a 93-page Navy investigation. There are legitimate problems that should be fixed. Feed the sailors. Give them safe water. Fix the sanitation problems. Take mental health seriously. Take care of your f*****g people. But being tired, pissed off, eating s****y food, missing liberty, and wanting to come home does not automatically mean the Navy is abusing you. Sometimes deployment just f*****g sucks. For years, people talked about “22 a day.” The VA’s official suicide count is lower than that, while other research looking at suicide and self-injury mortality has estimated the true number could be much higher. But this episode is not about arguing over statistics. It is about the people behind them. The veteran who stops answering the group chat. The guy who used to make everybody laugh and suddenly goes quiet. The one dealing with chronic pain, drinking too much, sleeping like garbage, losing his marriage, fighting the VA, and slowly convincing himself that everybody would be better off without him. This episode asks a harder question: When did he stop living before he actually died? Because there is often a long stretch of road between somebody starting to drift and somebody reaching the end.
