    Friday the 13th (1980), or: "KILL HER MOMMY. KILL HER."

    In 1978, John Carpenter’s Halloween became an instant hit, earning its spot as one of the most profitable independent films of all time. Slashers killing horny teens was in style and it only made sense that other independent filmmakers would try to make the next Halloween, but not many shameless rip-offs were as lucrative, or uninteresting, as Friday the 13th and the eleven sequels it would spawn. It’s pretty blatant, no exaggeration. Victor Miller and Sean S. Cunningham were very open about ripping off Halloween when they were making this film, down to the opening scene featuring the killer's point of view. Written by Kevin Williamson of Scream fame, directed by Robert Rodriguez fresh off of his 1996 action-horror film From Dusk till Dawn, and an extended cameo from R&B legend Usher, all while unabashedly wearing its sci-fi influences on its sleeve. Ripping off and paying homage to stories from Invasion of the Bodysnatchers to The Thing.     Equal parts love-letter and lampoon, Scream is a slasher that shouldn’t have beaten the odds. Director Wes Craven was nearly fired by real-life demons (the Weinsteins), the movie was nearly cancelled, and it even underperformed at the box office on its opening weekend. In spite of these setbacks, Craven’s work would still go on to remind audiences that he’s one of the greatest to ever do it, with a film that redefined the genre for the rest of the decade and beyond.
