The Debate on Baruch Hu U'Baruch Shemo:Part 15. The Palachi Legacy: Mandating the Response to Amen Sep 1, 2026

The Debate on Baruch Hu U'Baruch Shemo:Part 15. The Palachi Legacy: Mandating the Response to Amen Sep 1, 2026 This transcript explores the influential halakhic stance of Rabbi Hayim Palachi, a prominent 19th-century Chief Rabbi of Izmir, regarding the recitation of Amen. He emphasized a strict requirement for every family member to respond Amen during Kiddush and other blessings, even when an individual is technically fulfilling their obligation through the leader's recitation. Drawing on the traditions of his grandfather, a former Chief Rabbi of Israel, Palachi argued that this practice was the established custom of the entire Jewish nation and witnessed by many great scholars. He maintained that since there is no definitive law prohibiting the response, the long-standing minhag, or custom, must be preserved to ensure God is properly praised. His eldest son, Abraham Palachi, later reaffirmed this ruling, noting that both the scholarly elite and the general public consistently followed this tradition of answering Amen to every blessing.

The Debate on Baruch Hu U'Baruch Shemo:Part 14. The Evolution of Hida’s Rulings on Responding to Amen Aug 21, 2026 This transcript examines the shifting halakhic stance of Rabbi Chaim Yosef David Azulai, a preeminent 18th-century scholar known as the Chida, regarding the recitation of Baruch Hu U’Baruch Shemo. Initially, the Chida advised caution and suggested abstaining from the response out of respect for earlier authorities, though he noted the legal arguments were inconclusive. However, his later writings reveal a significant retraction as he observed that the universal custom among both scholars and laymen was to say the blessing. He eventually concluded that the prevailing communal practice should be upheld without interference. By the end of his life, his focus shifted from theoretical debate to endorsing the established tradition of answering during prayer. This evolution highlights the importance of living tradition and the weight of consensus in Jewish law.

The Debate on Baruch Hu U'Baruch Shemo:Part 13 Tradition Versus Individual Rabbinic Ruling Aug 19, 2026 This audio transcript explores a historical halakhic debate regarding whether a person should say "Baruch Hu u’baruch Shemo" when listening to a blessing to fulfill a religious obligation. While Rabbi Shmuel Abuhab of Venice argued in a posthumously published work that this response constitutes an improper interruption, other scholars strongly disagreed. Rabbi Mas’ud Hai Rakkaḥ of Libya challenged this stance by citing the universal custom of Jewish communities throughout the diaspora. He argued that if Abuhab were correct, generations of Jews would have failed to fulfill their duties during rituals like shofar blowing or Megillah readings. Investigation revealed that even in Abuhab’s own Venetian synagogue, the congregation ignored his ruling and continued to follow the traditional practice. Ultimately, the source emphasizes that communal tradition and the testimony of contemporary rabbis outweighed one individual's restrictive interpretation.

The Debate on Baruch Hu U'Baruch Shemo:Part 12. 📜 Silence in the Blessing: The Halakhic Debate on Barukh Hu Aug 12, 2026 This recording discusses the historical shift within certain Jewish communities regarding the practice of responding to specific blessings. In the past, it was customary for the congregation to verbally participate, but starting in the 1970s, influential leaders began a concerted effort to suppress this habit. The speaker explains that Rabbi Obadiah Yosef and his son provided the legal basis for this change, arguing that such responses constitute an impermissible interruption that prevents a person from fulfilling their religious obligation. To support this stance, they cited numerous rabbinic sources and classical authorities who viewed these additions as extraneous to the liturgy. Consequently, through persistent education and weekly announcements over several decades, the practice was largely eradicated in many synagogues. The source concludes by noting that while this is the prevailing modern view, the debate over whether to abandon centuries-old traditions remains a subject of ongoing discussion.

The Debate on Baruch Hu U'Baruch Shemo:Part 11. The Cusp of Tradition: Authority and the Rabbinic Transition Jul 31, 2026 The provided text explores a theological debate regarding the permissibility of responding during specific religious services, focusing on a severe argument that labels such actions as heresy or apostasy. The author examines the historical transition between the Rishonim, or early rabbinic authorities, and the Acharonim, who are the later scholars. Central to this discussion is the figure of Rabbi Yosef Karo, whose life and works serve as the chronological boundary between these two eras of Jewish law. The source critiques certain modern rabbis for using extreme anti-response arguments to support their positions, even when those arguments appear logically inconsistent. By contrasting these views, the text prepares to transition into a chronological analysis of authorities who advocate for answering during prayer. Ultimately, the source aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the conflicting legal opinions surrounding this communal practice.

    The Debate on Baruch Hu U'Baruch Shemo:Part 10. 7.28.26

The Debate on Baruch Hu U'Baruch Shemo:Part 10. The rules prohibiting invalid forms of saying "Amen" (such as a snatched, cut-off, or "orphan" Amen) are also found within the laws of the Amida repetition. Despite this placement, everyone agrees that these rules apply universally to all blessings, any place and any time. Therefore, the argument that laws located in the Amida section only apply to non-obligatory blessings is inconsistent. The speaker concludes that early foundational authorities—including the Rosh, Tur, and Shulchan Aruch—accepted the practice of answering to all blessings, though future discussions will explore further debates from later rabbis.

    The Debate on Baruch Hu U'Baruch Shemo:Part 9 7.24.26

The Debate on Baruch Hu U'Baruch Shemo:Part 9 The Mechanics of Communal Prayer: Balancing Response and Recitation Jul 24, 2026 This source examines a traditional legal debate regarding whether a listener should respond vocally during a blessing recited by a prayer leader. Some historical scholars argue against responding because the listener might miss hearing key words, which is a requirement for fulfilling one's religious obligation. However, the text explains that this concern is largely mitigated when a leader is properly trained to pause for the congregation. Modern practices often utilize specific melodies and rhythmic timing to ensure a harmonious exchange between the leader and the public. Ultimately, the potential for error only exists when an inexperienced individual fails to follow these established communal norms. Therefore, through proper education and musical coordination, worshippers can successfully answer without compromising their participation.

The Debate on Baruch Hu U’Baruch Shemo: Part 8

The Debate on Baruch Hu U’Baruch Shemo: Part 8 July 21,2026. This source examines the theological debate regarding the custom of saying Baruch Hu U’Baruch Shemo during a blessing. Some historical scholars, such as Rabbi Shmuel Aboab, argued that this response constitutes an impermissible interruption because listening with the intent to fulfill an obligation is legally equivalent to speaking. However, other prominent figures like Rabbi Shalom Messas contend that these words are a permissible form of praise rather than a disruption. They compare the practice to saying Amen, which serves as a necessary affirmation of faith and a stamp of approval on the prayer. Ultimately, the text highlights that the majority of authorities support the inclusion of this response as a way to glorify God's name. This discussion illustrates the complex legal balance between maintaining the integrity of liturgy and expressing communal devotion.
