ReThink History: A Woman's Place
Who was the first woman in the Americas to vote? Not an American. Matilde Hidalgo cast her ballot in Ecuador in 1924, Uruguay wrote women's suffrage into its constitution in 1917, and a village called Cerro Chato held South America's first women's vote in 1927, while the country that calls itself the most enlightened place in the hemisphere was still perfecting other ways of keeping women in their place: the asylum that took a wife who argued with her husband, the law that said a doctor's wife did not need the money, the amendment that failed while thirty-seven quiet words snuck through. This 12-part ReThink History series tells the story of women's rights across the whole hemisphere, North and South, side by side. The goal was the same everywhere: control of women's bodies, work, and voices. But the machinery differed. The United States democratized its patriarchy, every husband a king, backed by the asylum and the courtroom. Oligarchic Latin America ran it feudally, through the Church, the honor code, and the patron, with El Salvador's fourteen families as the type case. And the great immigrant nations of the south, Argentina and Brazil, built a hybrid that produced both the hemisphere's earliest suffrage and Evita's millions. Across twelve episodes: the 1913 march on Washington that turned into a riot; Elizabeth Packard, committed for disagreeing with her husband; Sor Juana arguing from inside the convent; the suffrage race the U.S. didn't win; the movement's own color line, from Ida B. Wells to Marian Anderson and the DAR; Evita and the vote from above; Prudencia Ayala daring to run for president of El Salvador in 1930; the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo, who beat a junta with headscarves; the ERA that failed and the Title IX that didn't; the quota revolution that made Mexico's congress half women while America's stalled at a quarter; the Green Wave meeting Dobbs; and one family, a suffragette who marched in 1913, her granddaughter who became a doctor in 1981, and her great-granddaughter serving a tribal clinic in the Sierra foothills today, measuring exactly what changed. A measured, sourced deep dive, narrated by AI voices from human-reviewed research. © 2026 Selway Solutions LLC · Educational & Institutional Use License · Contact
