#16 Courtney Thiry: Hearing God’s Voice When Fear Gets Loud

Courtney Thiry is my niece, a true joy to have in my life, and one of the boldest, most honest women I know. In this conversation, she gets honest about the pull from the Holy Spirit to speak up. She tells us how she recognizes the difference between God's voice and the enemy's, the fear and anxiety that tried to keep her from this very recording, and the words her grandma (and my incredible MIL) gave her at nineteen that changed how she sees avoidance. She also shares the hardest season of her life, when she was 17 and wanted to end her life, and how the Lord met her there.  This is a conversation about faith, courage, motherhood, and seeing ourselves, our children, and everyone around us through the lens of love. A note of care: This episode includes a story about suicidal thoughts. If you are struggling, please call or text 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7) or chat at 988lifeline.org. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. You are not alone, and you are loved. This episode is a conversation about faith and personal experience. It is not medical advice. Please talk with your doctor or a qualified professional about any medical decisions, including medications. 💜 "God does not speak negativity to you." Learning to tell the Holy Spirit's voice from the enemy's. 💙 "You can't believe in God and not believe in the devil." Grandma Jane's honest reality check. 💗 "If you avoid it, you're just gonna let it keep approaching you because you're not recognizing it." Avoidance becomes a cycle, and the cycle becomes a pattern. 💜 "Sometimes avoidance may look like comfort, but it's not." 💙 Going to the person directly (Matthew 18:15) instead of talking about them. If they listen, you've gained a brother or a sister. 💗 "Pain and hard situations were not designed by God to last forever." Her dad's words: "If you can take it, you can make it." 💜 Trusting the Lord with all your heart (Proverbs 3:5–6) when you feel confused. 💙 "Our kids don't need to be protected from the world. They need to learn how to live faithfully in it." Childlike faith, grace, and patience in parenting. 💗 "I can't not love someone else who was created by God." Courtney Thiry (Eimers) is a wife and a mother, and she says these roles lead her to a greater purpose: living better each day, not just for herself but for the roles she has been given and is grateful for. She calls them a lifetime relationship commitment and a guide as a parent. Family and friends are her priorities, because connection makes us feel whole. As long as they’re together, they’re happy, no matter where they are. Courtney loves to see people smile and loves making people laugh and feel seen. If she could describe herself in three words, they would be optimistic, curious, and authentic. #15 Is It Peace or Avoidance? Finding the Real Peace of Christ

Is it peace, or is it avoidance? For a long time I called avoidance “being nice,” “being strong,” and “keeping the peace.” I wasn’t a bad person, and I wasn’t unintelligent. I was in a season where I couldn’t see what was hurting me, and you can’t name a pattern you can’t see. In this solo episode, I’m sharing my story and walking you through three places we can land: not seeing it yet, feeling like something is missing, or seeing it and still choosing comfort. I’ll also share a simple activation for you to try today. Wherever you are is not a condemnation. It’s an invitation to see it through the lens of love, the way God sees it. Content note: this episode includes honest mentions of alcohol use and of suicide. If you’re in crisis or need someone to talk to, call or text 988 (U.S.) anytime. For an emergency, call 911. KEY TAKEAWAYS 💜 Avoidance rarely looks like avoidance. It looks like being nice, being strong, and being the one who keeps the peace. 💙 “You cannot change what you do not own.” Awareness is step one. 💗 Fake peace and the Lord’s peace (John 14:27) are not the same. Real peace is on the other side of the honest conversation. 💜 It is not your responsibility to control anyone’s emotions, including your children’s. 💙 It takes energy to keep a feeling pushed down, and that energy is yours. 💗 Your activation: finish the sentence “Sometimes I avoid ___,” then say one honest, loving sentence to yourself, to God, or to someone else. NEXT WEEK Helen’s niece Courtney joins her to talk about faith, honesty, and the Lord’s truth spoken in love. #14 The Joy of Living: What Candee's Story Taught Us

Description We just wrapped two episodes with Candee Cloos, a woman who faced the possibility of her own death and found that joy didn't leave her. It stayed right alongside the fear. In this episode, I talk about what that means for the rest of us: joy is already placed inside you, it isn't the same as happiness, and it's a fruit of the Holy Spirit that stays steady through hardship, trial, and sorrow. I also share a word for anyone who can't feel it right now, the beautiful kind of jealousy I first heard called "spiritual jealousy" at the Encounter Ministries Conference, and what happens to joy when forgiveness is only half finished. Is there a door to joy sitting right in front of you that you haven't opened? If you're struggling right now, you're not alone. In the U.S., you can call or text 988 anytime. If you haven't heard Candee's story yet, search for Part 1, Am I Ready to Go?, and Part 2, The Lord Isn't Done With Her Yet, in your podcast app. KEY TAKEAWAYS:💗 Happiness comes and goes with circumstances, but joy runs deeper and stays steady💗 Joy is already inside you, and you get to choose whether to access it💗 If joy feels out of reach right now, reach out for real support💗 Let someone else's joy show you what's possible for you💗 Forgiving what someone did is not the same as forgiving how it made you feel💗 Get out of your head and into your heart SPONSOR:This episode is sponsored by Pink Salt Riot, a woman-owned Christian company making wearable, everyday reminders of the truth. #13 The Lord Isn't Done With Her Yet: Candee Cloos's Story of Surrender (Part 2)

In Part 1, Candee Cloos shared a message she believed she heard from God during Mass and the question it left her with: am I ready to go? The Lord wasn't done with her yet. In this follow-up conversation, Candee tells me what her month of "the unknown" taught her, including the shift that came about two weeks in, through daily Mass and time before the Blessed Sacrament. We talk about a relic of Saint Maria Goretti that kept showing up at exactly the right moments, a prayer to meet a grandbaby on this side of the veil, and why joy isn't complete until we share it. If you missed it, start with Part 1, "Am I Ready to Go?" — Candee Cloos's Story of Surrender  KEY TAKEAWAYS:💛 When fear shows up, go to God first💛 You can't give oil to someone else's lamp, so keep your own lit💛 Prepare your heart before the storm, not after💛 Your joy isn't complete until you share it💛 God can meet you in unexpected signs, so take what resonates and let the rest roll off💛 Jesus never comes without an invitation, but when you open the door, He comes running ABOUT GUEST:Candee Cloos has been married to her husband, Todd, for over 31 years. They have five children, four of whom are married, and six grandchildren. She teaches fifth grade at a Catholic elementary school and has recently begun teaching Catechesis of the Good Shepherd to the three-year-olds in her parish. #12 "Am I Ready to Go?" — Candee Cloos’s Story of Surrender (Part 1)

Candee Cloos sent me an email that I haven't been able to stop thinking about. During Mass, in the middle of the consecration, she heard a voice say, "Your thirty days are coming." Whether or not it was God's voice, it took her breath away and sent her into a season of reckoning with a question most of us avoid: am I ready to go? In this raw, honest conversation, recorded shortly after that message, Candee shares the twelve-year prayer to St. Bridget, the friend she lost suddenly that season, the peace she found in surrender, and why living in faith instead of fear changes everything about how we live. If you'd like the lead-in to this conversation, listen to Faith Without Conditions here: LINK (https://open.spotify.com/episode/4O4sy19KYejPVvLP0QZf1b?si=55b647b6ae564bc7)  KEY TAKEAWAYS: 💛 You can feel real fear and still choose faith 💛 Surrender means trusting the outcome, whatever it turns out to be 💛 You don't have to wait for a crisis to ask, "Am I ready?" 💛 It is God's nature to bless and ours to receive 💛 Living in faith instead of fear is what gets you out of the living room 💛 You are enough. Allow God to love you in your brokenness. ABOUT GUEST: Candee Cloos has been married to her husband, Todd, for over 31 years. They have five children, four of whom are married, and six grandchildren. #11 Faith Without Conditions: What Real Surrender Actually Requires

If you had 30 days to live, how would you live differently? Hospice nurses have asked this question at countless bedsides, and the answers are almost always the same — the top five regrets of the dying: living for others instead of yourself, working too much, hiding your feelings, losing friendships, and not allowing happiness. So why aren't we living that way right now? In this solo episode, I get honest about the prisons we build out of thoughts we simply made up — "I'm stuck," "I don't have time," "they don't like me" — and how we live inside them like they're fact. I share how this same pattern shows up in our faith too: believing, but only if it looks exactly the way we've already decided it should. I lived this most clearly through infertility, holding faith with conditions instead of real surrender. I also share the actual prayers that carry me through this — the Surrender Novena, the Divine Mercy prayer, and sometimes just five words on repeat: let go, let go, let go. And I dig into something Fr. Mike Schmitz taught me through the Hallow app: it's not a crisis of faith we're having — it's a crisis of understanding. Trust isn't trust if we need to understand before we're willing to move. In this episode: • The top five regrets of the dying, and why they matter now • How we build our own prisons out of thoughts we made up • Faith with conditions vs. real surrender — the infertility story behind it • The prayers that carry me through hard seasons • Why needing to understand "why" is really just clinging to control • Holy boldness — showing up before you feel ready Next week, I'm sitting down with my dear friend Candee — a woman of deep faith — for a conversation about surrender that goes way beyond the surface. She's going to share a message that was put on her heart in the middle of Mass, and what it meant to trust God with the people she loves most. #10 One Day at a Time: Becky Rybak's 10-Year Journey with ALS

This podcast's name didn't start in a recording studio. It started in Becky Rybak's living room, on October 17th, 2025, during our very first Facebook Live together — a devotional we called Through the Lens of Love, long before it was ever a podcast. This episode is a full-circle moment I've been waiting to record. Becky was diagnosed with ALS at 38 years old, when her boys were three and seven. Ten years later — well past the typical prognosis, and squarely in the 10-20% who live past five years — she is still here. The only muscles she can move are her eyes, and a few others. She communicates through an eye-gaze machine, typing out entire conversations with her eyeballs. She cannot hug her own children. And her word for 2026 is patience. We talk about what ALS has actually taught her about patience — a virtue she says she didn't have before her diagnosis. We talk about her motto from day one, "one day at a time," and how it's held up over a decade. We talk about the emotions she's had to navigate — fear, anger, sadness, jealousy, guilt, shame — and how faith carried her through the ones that felt the least faithful. And we talk about her husband Mike, who has never once left her side, and the goals that have carried her forward: watching her sons make their First Communion, and now, watching them grow toward high school graduation. Becky's own words on suffering: "you either get bitter, or you get better. The choice does not belong to fate. It belongs to you." In this episode: The origin story of Through the Lens of Love, and Becky's role in it What ALS has taught Becky about patience she never could have learned another way Navigating fear, anger, and grief while holding onto faith "One day at a time" — her motto from day one, and how it's held up for 10 years Gratitude, from someone who has to fight for every breath Why joy and positive attitude are, in her words, "ninety percent of the battle" Becky's answer to the podcast's signature closing question This conversation will change how you see your own breath, your own arms, your own ability to hug the people you love. It is one of the most powerful episodes of Through the Lens of Love yet. Every day, Becky continues to inspire others to see through the lens of love. Her faith and patience are beyond what many of us can comprehend. #9 Pati: What "Patience" Actually Means

What if you couldn't hug someone? What if you couldn't move your own arms to scratch an itch, or reach for a glass of water? In this solo episode, I get honest about something that's never come naturally to me: patience. I'm one of the most persistent people you'll ever meet — but persistent and patient are not the same thing. I share the moment as a kid at an amusement park when I couldn't just stand still in line, and how my husband has asked me, even years into marriage, "can't you ever just be happy?" — not because I wasn't, but because I was always reaching for what's next instead of resting in what's now. Then I dig into the word itself. Patience comes from the Latin pati — to suffer. It's not just waiting nicely; it's the willingness to bear something disagreeable that God has permitted into your life. In Catholic teaching, patience is part of the cardinal virtue of Fortitude, one of the twelve Fruits of the Holy Spirit, and its ultimate model is Christ Himself — suffering quietly, out of love, not gritted-teeth resistance. And here's where it all connects: impatience is what happens when we see a delay, a person, or a disagreement through the lens of frustration. Patience is choosing to see that same moment through the lens of love instead. Same weight. Same hard thing. Completely different lens. In this episode: Why persistence and patience are not the same thing The root meaning of "patience" — and why it changed how I think about suffering Patience as part of the cardinal virtue of Fortitude, and a Fruit of the Holy Spirit Why "they're an idiot" is never a loving thought, even when you disagree with someone How impatience and patience are really just two different lenses on the exact same moment Why waiting your whole life for "someday" to feel patience, love, and joy will exhaust you Next week, I'm sitting down with my dear friend Becky Rybak, who has lived with ALS for 10 years. The only muscles that work for her are her eyes. Her word for 2026 is patience — because she's had to learn a form of it I can barely comprehend. You will not want to miss this conversation.
