#16 When You Can’t Even Pray: How Christ Comes to You Anyway | Luke 7

She never prayed. She never asked. She didn’t even look up. A widow is walking behind the coffin of her only son out of the gate of Nain, and Jesus stops anyway. He sees her, is moved with compassion, touches the coffin, and says: “Young man, I say to you, arise.” In this episode, we walk verse by verse through Luke 7:11-17, one of the most tender and theologically rich miracles in the Gospels. Why did Jesus touch what Jewish law called unclean? Why does He raise the dead with His own authority when Elijah and Elisha had to pray? And what does this miracle preview about Pascha and our own resurrection? We read it with the Church Fathers: St. Cyril of Alexandria on life flowing from Christ into death, St. Gregory of Nyssa on Nain as a rehearsal for the Resurrection, St. Ephraim the Syrian’s unforgettable line, “The Virgin’s son met the widow’s son,” St. Augustine of Hippo on the three raisings and the stages of sin, and St. Ambrose of Milan on the Church weeping like a mother over her children. In this episode you will discover: Why Christ comes uninvited when you can’t even prayWhat first-century widows, biers, and burial outside the gate tell us about her lossHow confession is Christ touching the bier of your own sinIf you’ve ever felt carried outside the gate like that young man, whether by heart-sin, acted sin, or habitual sin, this is for you. There is no grave Christ cannot stop for. Visit us at whispersfromtheages.com for every episode, the Church Fathers behind them, and more.
