The Shelly Show with Dr Fatima Khan

Dr Fatima Khan: Hormone Health is Mental Health What if the anxiety, depression, rage, brain fog or feeling that you’ve completely lost yourself isn’t “just stress” or something you simply have to push through? In this episode of The Shelly Show, I’m joined by Dr Fatima Khan, women’s health doctor, menopause expert and author of Hormone Health is Mental Health: How perimenopause hijacks your brain and how to reclaim yourself. Fatima has trained across psychiatry, obstetrics and gynaecology and general practice, and has spent the past decade focused on women’s hormonal and mental health.  Our topic is Hormone Health is Mental Health. This is a deeply personal conversation for both of us. Fatima opens up about her own mental health struggles during perimenopause and what it was like to suddenly experience the very symptoms she had spent years treating in other women. I also share what happened to me when perimenopausal depression hit. I didn’t understand why I suddenly felt anxious, depressed and unlike myself. I blamed myself before I understood that my changing hormones were playing a significant role. We talk about why the psychological symptoms of perimenopause can be missed, why women are so often told they’re stressed, burnt out or simply need antidepressants, and why doctors need to look at the whole hormonal picture when a woman in midlife suddenly presents with new mental health symptoms. We also unpack anxiety, depression, rage, sleeplessness, brain fog, loss of confidence and that frightening feeling many women describe as “I just don’t feel like myself anymore.” These are among the psychological symptoms Dr Khan discusses in her work.  And importantly, we talk about what women can actually do, what questions to ask their doctors and why treatment needs to look at the whole person rather than separating mental health from hormonal health. Because women deserve more than being told it’s all in their heads. Hormone health is mental health. It’s time we treated it that way. Welcome to The Shelly Show. One topic. Done well. The Shelly Show with Dr Vonda Wright

What happens when women stop trying to make themselves smaller and start training to become stronger? For episode two of The Shelly Show, I’m joined by orthopaedic surgeon, longevity expert and bestselling author Dr Vonda Wright. Our topic is Strong Not Skinny. Vonda and I talk about why women have been sold thinness as the ultimate goal for decades, why she is so frustrated by the return of “thin is in”, and why midlife is exactly the time we should be focusing on muscle, bone and strength instead. We unpack what actually happens to our bodies as we age, why muscle is so important for our future health, and why lifting weights is about so much more than changing how you look. Vonda also explains why women need to stop being afraid of getting strong, how menopause changes the conversation around exercise and body composition, and why the number on the scales tells you very little about how healthy or capable your body actually is. We talk strength training, protein, bone health, ageing, Hollywood body trends and what women can start doing now to protect the body they want to be living in decades from today. Because the goal isn’t to take up less space. It’s to build a body strong enough to carry you through the rest of your life. Welcome to The Shelly Show. One topic. Done well. The Shelly Show with Melani Sanders

What happens when one funny video from a car turns into a global sisterhood of seven million women? For the very first episode of The Shelly Show, I’m joined by Melani Sanders, founder of the We Do Not Care Club, People Magazine’s Creator of the Year and New York Times bestselling author. Our topic is Finding Your People. Melani and I talk about why so many women in midlife are finally letting go of other people’s expectations, how the We Do Not Care Club became a worldwide movement, and why sisterhood can be so powerful when you’re feeling lost, lonely or invisible. Melani also opens up about being terrified before her sold-out book tour, deciding to “do it scared”, suddenly finding herself on The Drew Barrymore Show, and learning how to protect herself as her life changed almost overnight. We talk friendship, boundaries, menopause, vulnerability, women supporting women and why finding your people doesn’t mean finding hundreds of them. Sometimes you just need one person who makes you feel like you belong. And yes, there is also discussion of brain fog, dry coochies and laughing so hard you need to change your pantyliner.
