    Don't Judge A Movie By It's Book | Frankenstein (2025) | Ep. 42

    Welcome back to Movies at Midnight!This week, Nikki, Cody, and special guest Dani are continuing Guillermo Del Toro month with their review of Frankenstein.In 1857, Captain Anderson is sailing towards the North Pole when his ship is caught in the ice. During the night, Anderson and his crew come across an injured man in the ice. As they take him aboard, the crew are attacked by a giant monster, but Anderson is able to subdue the monster by submerging him in the Arctic water. The injured man reveals to Anderson that his name is Victor Frankenstein, and that the creature that attacked him is his creation. Victor then tells his tale to Anderson about his life leading up to the creation of the monster.Frankenstein was given a limited release in theaters in October of 2025, before being released to Netflix in November. While the movie didn't make a lot of money at the box office, the film gained critical acclaim, earning nominations for Best Picture and Best supporting Actor for Jacob Elordi, while winning Best Make-Up, Best Costume Design, and Best Production Design. The movie has been criticized by most fans of the source material for not being an entirely adaption of Mary Shelley's original novel, but does that actually make it a bad adaption?     Mitch McConnell At His Prime! | Pan's Labyrinth (2006)| Movies At Midnight Ep. 41

    Welcome back to Movies At Midnight!This week, we're kicking off Guillermo Del Toro Month, where we're reviewing four different films by the Oscar-winning filmmaker, and we're starting with our review of Pan's Labyrinth.Ofelia and her pregnant mother are moving into the countryside of Spain. They are moving to meet Captain Vidal, Ofelia's new step-father and father of Carmen's unborn child. At their new home, Ofelia finds a stone labyrinth, and inside finds a faun. The Faun tells Ofelia that she is the reincarnation of Princess Moanna of the underworld, and that in order to return to her real parents, she must complete three tasks before the full moon. Ofelia agrees, and starts the tasks the next day. Meanwhile, Captain Vidal is trying to hunt down the Spanish Marquis, who are determined to overthrow the fascist government ruling the country. As the real war rages on in Spain, Ofelia has to overcome these difficult tasks before the moon rises, or else she will be cursed to live out the rest of her life in her human body.Pan's Labyrinth released in 2006, and was a critical and commercial success. The film went on to be nominated for 6 Academy Awards, and winning 3 for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Make-Up. But does the film hold up over 20 years later?     Oh, hai everyone. Welcome back to Movies at Midnight!This week, Nikki, Cody, and special guest Joey are finishing off "So Bad, It's Good" Month with our review of The Room, starring, written, produced, and directed by Tommy Wiseau.Johnny is just your everyday man living in San Francisco. He is in love with his girlfriend and future wife Lisa. Unbeknownst to Johnny, Lisa is having an affair with Johnny's best friend Mark. Things start to spiral out of control for Johnny once he's denied his promotion at work and suspicious that Lisa is cheating on him. Johnny now has to navigate these new changes to his life.The room was released in 2003, and was a commercial and critical failure, with many listing it as being the worst film ever made. Since its release, the film has gained a massive cult following, crowning it the Best Worst Film Ever Made. Tommy Wiseau himself has even embraced the following the film has, while calling the film a black comedy. But does this film deserve the title of Best Worst Film over 20 years later?     Make Out Sesh w/ Nicolas Cage (GONE WRONG) | The Wicker Man (2006) | Ep. 39

    Welcome back to Movies at Midnight!This week, we are continuing "So Bad, It's Good" month with our review of The Wicker Man, directed by Neil LaBute.Edward Mauls is a police officer who gets a letter from his ex-fiance Willow. The letter asks Edward to come to Summersisle to help her find her missing daughter. Once Edward arrives, he is met with hostility from the local women in the community, for they do not like outsiders trespassing on their private island. Nevertheless, Edward reunites with Willow to begin his investigation into the missing child. As the case unfolds, Edward realizes that there is more to this child's disappearance than a kidnapping or runaway. Edward finds himself tied into a cult that is conspiring against him.The Wicker Man was released in 2006, and is a remake of a film with the same name from 1973. Upon its release, the film was met with overwhelmingly negative reviews, and was a commercial failure. Over the years, the film has gained a cult following, in part to the film's bizarre plot lines and Nicolas Cage's over-the-top performance. But does the film deserve its cult (haha) status 20 years later? Joshua and his family are preparing to spend a month swapping house with a family that lives in a small town named Nilbog. Joshua is skeptical about the trip because the ghost of his deceased grandfather is warning him that the town of Nilbog is inhabited by goblins that turn people into vegetables and eat them. Once the family arrives at Nilbog, they're faced with strange occurrences with the small community. The family soon realize that the grandfather was right, and the town of goblins are set on trying to devour them.Troll 2 was released in 1990, and was met with overwhelmingly negative reviews, with some critics calling it the worst film ever made. Over the years, the film has gained a cult following, being called 'The Best Worst Movie Ever Made', and even has a documentary about the making of the film made by the star of the film, Michael Stephenson. But does the movie deserve to be crowned 'The Best of The Worst'? Trouble comes up when the occurrence happens in other nearby cities, and Elliot and Alma soon get split up from Julian, but agree to take care of his daughter Jess. The three of them now have to fight against the elements unless they also succumb to whatever it is that is attacking people.The Happening was released in 2008, and was a critical and commercial failure, with most people calling the film a new low for M. Night Shaymalan's career. However, over the years, the movie has gained a cult following for its unintentional humor and goofy performances from the lead actors. But does the movie deserve the so bad, it's good title? While the two have a quick blossoming romance, terror strikes their city in the form of birds attacking people and places. The birds have gone crazy from a strand of Bird Flu brought on by global climate change. Rod and Nathalie have to fight for their lives before they become bird feed.Birdemic: Shock and terror was released in theaters in 2010, and hit home video early 2011. The movie quickly became labeled one of the worst films ever made, with attention drawn to its terrible acting, atrocious dialogue, and awful special effects. But do all those elements give the movie some charm?     Allegedly!!!! | Zodiac (2007) | Ep.35

    Welcome back to Movies at Midnight!This week, we're finishing Serial Killer/Slasher month with our review of Zodiac, directed by David Fincher.On July 4th, 1969, couple Darleen Ferrin and Michael Mageau are gunned down by this unknown assailant. This killer starts to write taunting letters to San Fransisco Chronicle, calling himself The Zodiac. Paul Avery and Robert Graysmith, who both work for the Chronicle, take an immediate interest in the case, and start investigating the murders. Meanwhile, Detective David Toschi is brought in to investigate the Zodiac murders. What follows is a decade-long obsessive hunt for this killer that takes control of the lives of those involved.Zodiac was released in 2007, and while the film wasn't a financial success, the movie received critical acclaim, with praise going to the tremendous ensemble cast and attention to detail in historical accuracy.
