The Cage You Carry: Poetry, Photography, and Staying Human in the AI Age

Phil hosts Jesse Ratner and Dan Kutler on "Happy to Chat" to discuss their new book, The Cage You Carry — a collaboration pairing Jesse's poetry with Dan's San Francisco street photography. The book explores AI, social media, work, aging, loneliness, creativity, and the struggle to stay human in a world that wants to optimize everything. Jesse reads several poems from the book, including "The Blazer" (on social media addiction), "The Audition" (on LinkedIn conformity), "AB Test Redemption" (on a CMO losing herself to AI), "Cathedral of Wires" (the Sam Altman poem that kicked off the entire project), and "The First Man" (on his father and the origins of the cage). Dan describes the stories behind his photographs — the Pee-wee Herman blazer shot, the man with a python on a Razor scooter, the seagull lined up with the Transamerica building, and the ecstatic SF Pride block party. They discuss how the book came together, the interplay between poems and photos, whether the project could exist outside San Francisco, Jesse's viral Sam Altman poem, how Dan photographs human weirdness without making people the punchline, the dilemma of living in the moment versus capturing it, whether real photographs become more valuable in the age of AI-generated imagery, and ultimately — what is the cage you carry?

How Do Marketers Fight AI Slop?

Inspired by Tiffany Hsu's New York Times piece "Silicon Valley Is as Sick of AI Slop As You Are," Jesse and Phil dig into what "AI slop" really means and what marketers should do about it. They cover Pew Research data on AI-authored web pages, Spotify's removal of 75 million spammy tracks, and studies on model collapse and writing homogenization — then debate whether trust is marketing's most valuable asset, why disclosure of AI use can backfire, and whether humor and weirdness are still a human advantage (spoiler: research says AI can be funny too). The conversation closes on what should actually differentiate brands when content becomes infinite: taste, judgment, and original point of view.

Storytelling in the Age of AI

Jesse and Phil explore why storytelling matters even more now that AI can generate content instantly. - Ricoeur's philosophy: narrative is what makes time meaningful - Comedy in brand storytelling — rare in B2B, more common in consumer ads - Wendy's "Where's the beef?" as a classic differentiation story - Why big tech brands avoid humor in their marketing - The 12 brand archetypes, and the customer as hero - Archetypes in action: Salesforce, Harley-Davidson, Liquid Death - AI makes skilled writers more essential, not less - Every business has a story, intentional or not Perception and word-of-mouth, illustrated by "The Odyssey" - Storytelling abhors a vacuum" — even AI companies get a narrative by default - Archetypes map to product categories; small brands can use them to stand out - Examples of storytelling gone wrong - Marketing as a blend of analysis and creativity

From Hollywood to Google to Running Your Own Agency

This week, Phil sits down with Jesse to trace his winding 30-year career — from writing movie taglines in Hollywood (including Saving Private Ryan and The Talented Mr. Ripley) and ghostwriting Pamela Anderson's personal website in the early internet days, to delivering newspapers, working customer service, and eventually landing at Google, where he led a 20-person creative team on the Google Ads account for years. Jesse opens up about getting laid off on his 40th birthday, moonlighting his way into buying a house in San Francisco (and the messy fallout that followed), and the leap into founding his own creative agency after a pivotal stint at Uber. He closes with hard-won advice for young creatives: knock on doors, listen more than you talk, and love the craft. Why Corporate Blogs Matter More Than Ever

In this episode of Happy to Chat, Jesse and Phil make the case for why corporate blogs matter more than ever in 2026 — even as short-form video dominates and AI reshapes how people search for information. Phil draws on his experience running Nokia's global blog (1 million unique visitors a month) and leading content at Equinix to break down what makes a great corporate blog: owning the industry conversation, not just your products; finding authentic voices inside the company; and using the blog as the hub that ties your entire content ecosystem together. Jesse brings his own writing experience — from health blogs at One Medical to laser industry content at Coherent — to explore how SEO strategy is evolving into AEO (Answer Engine Optimization), and what it means to write for LLMs versus humans. Topics covered: Why blogs outperform social media as a long-term owned channelThe SEO vs. AEO debate: writing for Google vs. writing for ChatGPTGhostwriting, thought leadership, and who should actually write your postsUsing blogs at every stage of the marketing funnel — including ABM lead generationThe authenticity problem: how AI-generated content is changing reader expectationsContent calendars, evergreen posts, sequels, and what metrics actually matter

How to Create a LinkedIn Presence Without Losing Your Voice

Phil and Jesse dig into what it actually takes to build an authentic LinkedIn presence — without sounding like a content robot. Jesse, a veteran copywriter with credits at Google, YouTube, and Uber, shares how a raw pandemic-era post changed his entire approach to the platform. They talk through where post ideas really come from, how Jesse develops his signature narrative style, what makes a post flop or go viral, and why the best metric for LinkedIn success isn't impressions — it's the quality of the relationships you build. Plus: fictional hooks, AI poetry, wealth managers who choose ChatGPT over copywriters, and why dreams never work as post ideas.
