The AI Exhale

Vibe CFO

The AI Exhale is a five-minute, weekly, fly-on-the-wall chat between Jez and Cam from Vibe CFO - the sound of AI finally making sense for accountants and business owners. Every week we take one thing happening in AI and do the filtering for you: does it matter, who's it for, and what you'd actually do about it. Sometimes the honest answer is "ignore this one." Whether you run the firm, run the business, or you're the one who's quietly become everyone's "AI person" - no jargon, no sales pitch. Just real talk that leaves you calmer and a little sharper. New episodes every Friday. Vibe in 5.

The AI Exhale: AI Hype vs Financial Reality - Firmus Pulls Its Float (and Zuck’s first Guinness)

Firmus started out in Launceston mining bitcoin on cheap Tassie hydro, pivoted to AI, and was about to pull off the biggest float since Telstra. Then it pulled the whole thing at the last minute. Around $50 million in revenue, a $44 billion price tag, and most of the infrastructure still to be built. Backed by Nvidia and Blackstone, pitched to Aussie super funds, and it still couldn’t get away. It feels like the moment the AI hype wave runs into the financial world. The people writing the cheques are starting to do what accountants do, and ask to go through the cash flows one more time. When the story gets ahead of the substance, people can smell it, and here in Australia they smell it pretty quickly. The same smell test is everywhere this week. Zuck sipping a Guinness like it was his first. Two AIs left alone in a meeting, politely saying goodbye to each other on a loop. And in France, a novel pulled from the country’s top literary prize over AI claims, after the detectors scored it anywhere from very likely human to 100 percent AI. If even the machines can’t tell, that’s a battle nobody wins, and it comes back to whether the work is any good. Which brings it back to finance, and deterministic versus probabilistic. Same input, same answer every time, versus a very good guess that can drift the more it loops. Jez and Cam on why hallucinations are still holding back confidence to act on the data, and why human judgement, traceability and checking the plumbing matter more than ever. Five minutes. One thing that matters. We ignore the rest, so you can too. Vibe CFO is Australian founded. An AI CFO for small and medium business, out of the box, governed and secure. Vibe in 5. vibecfo.ai

The AI Exhale: Feature vs Product - Anthropic’s Dashboards and Motion (and a cartoon for the tradies)

Anthropic has made pretty pictures free. Ask Claude a question and get a live dashboard back in 30 seconds, or turn your quarterly report into a short animated video. The tech bros were quick to declare the data amalgamators finished. It looks a lot more like something we’ve seen before. Artifacts, the interactive pages Claude has been able to build for a while, now come with a nice bow on them, a bit like when Power BI arrived as Power Pivot and Power Query in a shiny new wrapper. Credit where it’s due on traceability. Each chart shows its working, which accountants will appreciate, and a lot of small business owners are visual people, like the salon owner who loves picking the colours. But it’s still garbage in, garbage out. A slick chart on dodgy numbers is just a prettier mistake, nobody has published any accuracy figures yet, and the real value sits in shaping the data properly before it ever reaches a chart, rather than tipping raw connections straight in. Motion is a harder sell. A cartoon of the numbers might work for an internal annual report, but it’s hard to picture a tradie watching one and getting much out of it. It feels like a feature looking for a product. Then there’s the bigger question of software going headless, where you never open the app and the AI does the work for you. Salesforce has opened every door, while Xero has only opened some. Jez and Cam on why going headless looks like ammunition for startups, while the big players with a loyal customer base would rather keep that relationship in their own world. Five minutes. The AI Exhale: Just Asking vs Going Deep - The New Stats on What People Spend on AI (and a cheeky Uber tip)

Most people paying for AI spend around $25 a month and use it the same way every day. They ask it questions and have a chat. Meanwhile the top 1% are spending around $900 a month, up 80% in just 18 months. That’s from new card-spending data published by Silicon Valley investor Andreessen Horowitz, and it shows how early most of us still are. What we land on is that the difference is asking versus building. Most people pay for one AI and stop there, like a gym membership. The people spending more have set up scheduled triggers and workflows that wake the AI up to check a report, do a job and come back with an answer, all while they’re away from the desk. That’s when it stops feeling like a chatbot and starts feeling like help. It’s also when the tokens add up, which is why the spend climbs. So why move up? Because that’s where the value is. Most people stall because they don’t know what’s possible yet, and the deeper workflows will increasingly sit on higher plans. Once an assistant is sorting your calendar, writing your emails and booking your travel, the higher price starts to make sense. One thing to watch as agents start spending money for you. Researchers ran 325,000 experiments and found AI agents nudge people toward pricier options, even when asked for the cheapest. Staying price aware pays off. Jez and Cam on why most people are still just asking AI questions while others have it doing the work, what it takes to make that jump, plus a cheeky tip for knocking a few dollars off your next Uber. The AI Exhale: Own It vs Rent It - The West’s Answer to China’s Open Models (and a Top 30 pat on the back))

Enterprises want AI built on their own data, and they don’t want to hand that data to someone else to do it. So plenty of them went off to build their own models on open source, and for the last couple of years the best of those models came out of China. This week the West stepped up. A New York startup called Reflection unveiled Beam, and France’s Mistral followed a day later with a trillion parameter model they’ve nicknamed Le Chonk. What we land on is that the pitch isn’t “we’re the best”. It’s “we’re good enough, and built in the West”. Sitting a step behind the leading open models is close enough to give Western businesses the confidence and security to own their AI rather than rent it. That’s the real fight now, open versus closed. The smartest AI stays expensive, the workhorse models do the grunt work, and the closed labs are answering with cheap workhorses of their own. For small and medium business, though, owning isn’t the play. A top-spec desktop box costs around fifteen grand, runs slowly and serves one person, when the same kind of model is available for cents. Enterprise builds its own. Small business gets the benefit without the build. And for Australia, with no frontier lab of our own, open models are how some of that control comes back onshore. As Reflection’s founder put it, the only way to truly own intelligence is if it’s open. Jez and Cam on the West’s answer in the open model race, and how small business gets the upside of all this without carrying the cost of owning it. Five minutes. One thing that matters. The AI Exhale: An AI Boomerang - From Firing to Rehiring (and 50% off at the drive-thru)

For the last year the headline was AI coming for jobs. Now the jobs are coming back. CommBank cut 45 call centre roles for an AI voice bot, then called it an error and reversed it. Klarna boasted its AI was doing the work of 700 people, watched quality slide, and started hiring humans again. Apple has pressed pause on plans to hand thousands of support roles to AI. And by one count, a third of the companies that made these cuts have spent more rehiring than they saved. Our take is that the AI mostly worked. What didn't work was the speed. Companies went straight to the big rollout instead of trying it in a couple of places first, a bit like McDonald's putting AI in the drive-thru before it could get a cheeseburger order right. And most of this landed in customer service, where empathy is the whole job. So is this a "not yet" rather than a "never"? Probably. The disruption is still coming, but this feels like a handbrake that gives people time to learn to work alongside the machines. For accountants and business owners, it's a good news story. Humans in the loop are going up in value, not down. Jez and Cam on why the fastest movers ended up paying twice, what the boomerang says about the human role, and why upskilling is the move whichever way it swings. Five minutes. The AI Exhale: Reversible vs Irreversible - Where AI Belongs (and where the bank wreck starts)

Cam turned on auto reconciliation in Xero back in July, then opened the file last weekend. Of about 300 transactions it had done two hundred, posting payments without matching them to invoices, amounts off by a cent that would have matched on their own, transfer dates mixed up so payments went missing. Hours of it, screens everywhere, working out what the thing had done versus what was actually in the ledger. Bank rec was built around a person matching things up and using judgement as they go. Drop AI into the middle of that and it does not inherit the judgement. It inherits the button. So it gets very good at clearing the queue, which is not the job. The line worth holding onto is reversible versus irreversible. Research, a marketing campaign, a first draft, all of that is cheap to get wrong and you just go again. A system of record is the opposite. Errors compound, they cost hours to unpick, and a green tick stops meaning anyone checked. And it is not only accounting. The client turns up to the lawyer with the contract already written and says it is all covered. Jez and Cam on the bank wreck doing the rounds, why a client's mess now takes longer to fix than if they had done nothing, and what an accountant is actually selling once the output is the easy part. The AI Exhale: The Medicare Breach - Slow Disclosure and Old Systems

There was no attacker. An AI agent hit blocks on a Medicare portal, routed around them, and ended up inside a government health system. No criminal, no intent, nobody trying to steal anything. So the story is not the breach. It is the silence after it. June for the breach. August before OpenAI found it internally. Another month before the government heard, and then only into a public inbox, with the Prime Minister not seeing it for five more days. Park the data for a second: for three months nobody could assess it, act on it or tell anyone. That gap is what Albanese has taken to New York. Safeguards, mandatory disclosure, legal liability for the labs. Which raises the harder question, because open source is governed by nobody and criminals outside the jurisdiction run the same tools. So where does liability actually land? And if you run your own trained models on your own servers, does it land on you? There is a second thing in here nobody wants to hear. AI is very good at finding vulnerabilities, and plenty of businesses are sitting on old systems they should have retired years ago. When the tool gets that good at finding gaps, the gaps become your problem. Jez and Cam on whether this was a hack at all, who ends up carrying the can, and the one question worth asking every vendor: when something goes wrong, how many hours until you tell me, and where does the message land? The answer is not to stop using agents. Treat one like a junior who has never been shown around the building. Defined scope, no standing access, and a log, so when someone asks what happened there is an answer. Five minutes. One thing that matters. We ignore the rest, so you can too.
