When your mind gets all the energy and your body gets none

This is episode 7 of Undoing with Priscilla Zorrilla. Today we speak with Brie Sodano again. She is a wealth coach and nationally recognized personal finance expert, founder of Cash Confident and author of Cash Confident: Practical Money Management for the Modern Woman. In the first episode with Brie, she explained how scarcity lives in the body. This time we go deeper into the overfunded mind, where thinking takes most of our energy and the body is underfunded. Brie shares what helps us bring that energy back into the body. What money scarcity does beneath the surface

This is Undoing with Priscilla Zorrilla, an ongoing conversation series about the patterns we build and the work of coming out of them. In this episode I sit down with Brie Sodano, a nationally recognized personal finance expert, to dive into real money scarcity problems because, well, I am going through them. Brie breaks down how scarcity is a survival response in the body and not just a mindset problem. We talk through different levels of scarcity, what scarcity looks like in daily behavior, and how to work with it instead of against it. Ep. 5: Why we feel exhausted even when life looks fine on the outside

This is the fifth conversation of Undoing with Priscilla Zorrilla. Today we talk with Dr. Tanya Berfield, founder of Mindset Medicine and author of Radical Resilience. She holds a doctorate in transformative leadership, along with training in qi gong, hypnosis, and somatic coaching. Her work is for the woman who looks fine and holds everything together on the outside and is exhausted by all of it, perhaps even unknowingly. Some context if you’re new here: I’ve spent my whole life leading with my mind. I’ve done a decade of deep inner work. I understand my patterns. I can trace them all the way back. Even so, my body is still tense, my stomach braces, my shoulders hold on, and I only notice when I slow down. My mind has moved on from things my body is still carrying. The thing I’ve been working to unlearn lately is believing that the mind is where change happens. That’s simply not true. There is so much in the body. We can do all the mental work and our nervous system still hasn’t caught up. This conversation gives us a lot to sit with and practical things to try. I hope you connect to the topic at hand 🫶🏼 Tanya also has a free 12-minute body scan reset on her website at drtanyab.com. Put in your email and it comes right to you. Also, Tanya writes on Substack as Dr. Tanya Berfield. If you’d rather watch this conversation than listen, the video is on YouTube. Tanya, thank you for all that you provided in this conversation. You gave us the why and then you gave us the actual things to do about it which is exactly what I care about. Appreciate you so much. To the listeners, thank you for being here. Be gentle with yourself as you take any of this in and know that none of us are doing this in isolation even when it feels that way. What part of this conversation really spoke to you? Ep. 4: How Chinese medicine reads emotion in the body w/ Dr. Summer Reidie

This is the fourth conversation of Undoing with Priscilla Zorrilla. Today we speak with Summer Reidie, a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine whose work sits where ancient wisdom meets modern science. She helps people understand how emotions are carried in the body, why symptoms are often messengers, and how healing begins when we learn to listen to what the body is saying. Some context if you’re new here: I’ve spent my whole life leading with my mind. I’ve done a decade of deep inner work. I understand my patterns. I can trace them all the way back. Even so, my body is still tense and I only notice it when I slow down to be with it. My mind has moved on from things my body is still carrying. There is definitely a disconnect between the two, and I feel that. The thing I've been working to unlearn lately is thinking that the mind is where change happens. What I didn’t have yet was the Eastern medicine view—the way Chinese medicine reads emotion in the body. Summer gives us that map. Key discoveries in this conversation: * In Chinese medicine, the body is a landscape, not a machine. Qi moves through the meridians, and every organ connects to an emotion. Health is flow. Stagnation is the enemy. A symptom (like physical pain) is the body telling you where the flow got interrupted. * Emotions live in the organs. Not metaphorically. They literally live in the organs. The liver governs anger. Lungs hold grief. Kidneys hold fear. The spleen holds worry and overthinking. Over time, the organ’s function is shaped by the emotional pattern it carries. * The body doesn’t produce symptoms randomly. It’s speaking the only language it has left once we’ve stopped listening. * Shame is almost the common denominator underneath the symptoms. And shame thrives in secrecy, silence, and judgment. Writing it on paper turns the light on. The two questions Summer mentioned in the talk that I promised to have in the description: - What is my life actually asking of me right now?- What am I carrying that has nowhere to go? A simple practice she swears by to release emotional stagnation and thus the physical pain: get a notebook, set a timer for 10 to 15 minutes, write whatever is bothering you, pen to paper. Put your pain point at the top (e.g. upper back pain, moderate, left side) and track it day by day. Start creating a map of what’s really going on. If you feel protective over what you wrote, rip it up or burn it. The point is to witness yourself. Summer writes at Summer’s Curious on Substack. If you’d rather watch this conversation than listen, the video is on YouTube. Summer, thank you for this. You gave us in the West a whole map most of us were never handed and concrete ways to start using it. Appreciate you immensely 🫂 Chapters: 00:00 Intro02:17 How TCM sees the body04:12 Which emotions live in which organs06:49 What it means for emotion to get stuck06:49 The patient whose back pain was fear13:15 Treating the pattern, not the symptom17:28 The shame underneath the symptoms22:52 A practice you can start at home This is a public episode. Ep 3: What if understanding everything is how we hide? A conversation with psychotherapist Kate Mayor

This is the third conversation of Undoing with Priscilla Zorrilla. Today we speak with Kate Mayor, a psychotherapist and author with training across many modalities from counseling to energy healing. After years of helping people understand themselves, she came to see that insight alone doesn’t create transformation. Her work explores what happens when we stop trying to think our way into healing and start listening to the body. Quick context if you’re new here: I’ve spent my entire life living from my mind. I’ve done a decade of deep inner work. I understand my patterns. I can trace them all the way back. Even so, my body is still tense—shoulders bracing, stomach gripping, temples engaging even in safe, calm settings. My mind has moved on from things my body is still carrying. The thing I’ve been working to undo lately is the belief that if I can understand something, I’ve handled it. Kate’s writing named that pattern for me—that understanding itself can become a place we hide. Our conversation goes right into it. A few key insights I gathered from Kate: * When we lead with the need to understand, all our attention goes there—reading the room, making meaning, etc. We end up observing life instead of living it. It puts a screen between us and the moment. * The need to ‘understand’ is really the need to feel safe. The mind hates chaos so it puts everything in neat boxes. Uncertainty feels unsafe, so we manage instead of just being. * Our nervous system settles when it knows we’re listening. From that place, it can finally bring up what needs to be dealt with because it trusts we won’t override ourselves. We’re listening. * We don’t need to understand every moment and every thing. We just need to feel it and respond. Permission to not understand is its own kind of freedom. * Doorways that bring us back into the body: cold water, music, being with animals. The things that make us feel alive pull us out of our heads and into sensation. How to find Kate: She writes at Kate Mayor Writes on Substack Her website Her book, All The Parts It Takes If you’d rather watch this conversation than listen, the video is on YouTube: A huge thank you, Kate, for a conversation that demystified so much about getting out of the head and into the body, and for the tangible ways to start. What a neuroscientist and a nurse taught me about getting out of my head

I’ve had two conversations so far in Undoing with Priscilla Zorrilla. One with Emilia Ferreira, a neuroscientist. One with Danielle Wilkinson, a nurse who works both clinical and somatic worlds. This talk just me sharing my takeaways combining those two talks because things clicked when I put them side by side. Emilia explained that thinking is low arousal. It creates too little chemistry to rewire anything and the body responds fondly to chemistry (e.g. oxytocin, dopamine). That’s why a decade of healing through talk therapy and through the mind left my body in a tense / “on alert” state. Danielle explained the other half. When a trigger arises, we have about 5-10 seconds before our nervous system runs its old pattern all the way through. That window is where we can do the work to induce true, deep change. We can name the moment ("This is a loop. My body thinks I'm in danger. I'm okay."), lean in and stay with it, and then do something physical. This combination is where we start tapping into the body’s chemistry. More details in the talk. For the full conversations, both are on YouTube: Emilia’s is here Danielle’s is here If you’d rather watch this talk than listen, the video is up on YouTube: If you like this video, don’t forget to check out my next one and subscribe. Ep. 2: The body keeps telling the story your mind finished

This is the second conversation of Undoing with Priscilla Zorrilla. Today we speak with Danielle Wilkinson, a nurse with 20 years in women’s and children’s health. She leads a large postpartum unit and she’s also a Reiki Master working on breathwork and somatic facilitator training. She toggles between Eastern and Western medicine, holistic and traditional care. Quick context if you’re new here: I’ve spent my entire life living from my mind. I’ve done a decade of deep inner work. I understand my patterns. I can trace them all the way back. Even so, my body is still tense—shoulders are constantly bracing, stomach gripping, temples engaging even in safe, calm settings. My mind has moved on from things my body is still carrying. My last conversation was with a neuroscientist. We got into the importance of accessing ourselves chemically to facilitate true change. This new conversation comes at it from the body itself from someone who has spent 20 years with people’s bodies in the room. A few things Danielle said that are percolating in me: * You have about 5-10 seconds between recognizing a loop and your nervous system completing it. That’s the window. Name it, face it, and use a tool before it closes. * We cannot shame, guilt, or bully ourselves out of a pattern. The change comes from a lighthearted place. “There you are again, old friend.” * The pattern is still here because your body thinks it’s serving a purpose. Find the perceived benefit, and you can rewire it into an actual one. * The more you listen to your body, the less it has to scream. Danielle writes at You Are The Oracle on Substack. If you’d rather watch this conversation than listen, the video is on YouTube: A huge thank you to you, Danielle, for an insightful conversation with concrete examples of how to take action in the moment to induce true change. Appreciate you so much. To the listeners: Who would you like for me to talk with next on this subject? Tell me in the comments. This is a public episode. Ep 1: The body responds to chemistry, not beliefs

This is the first conversation of something new. It’s called Undoing with Priscilla Zorrilla. Call it a podcast. Call it insightful talks. Call it whatever you want. What I know is that it's going to be honest, useful, and worth your time. Quick context if you’re new to this thread of my life: I’ve spent my whole life living from my mind. I’ve done a decade of deep inner work. I understand my patterns. I can trace them all the way back. And my body is still tense—shoulders bracing, forehead engaged, stomach tightening. My mind has moved on from things my body is still carrying. So I’m asking the question out loud now: how do we get out of cognitive dominance and into the body’s intelligence when thinking has been our operating system forever? I don’t have the answer. I’m in the question. And I’m talking to people who understand it from angles I don’t. First up is Emilia Ferreira, a neuroscientist and biohacker. A few things she said that are still percolating: * Thinking is low arousal. It creates too little chemistry to rewire anything. Inducing the body’s chemistry is where true change happens. * You never actually lose anything. Access to my body is still there, waiting. * The way through is a new partnership with the mind. Emilia writes at Raising Ona, Biohacking Motherhood on Substack. If you’d rather watch this conversation than listen, the video is on YouTube: Thank you, Emilia, for this informative and illuminating conversation. Appreciate you so much for all the ways you opened my eyes! To the listeners: Who would you like for me to talk with next—a psychologist? A somatic practitioner? Tell me in the comments.
