Queer as Friends Episode 7: Just Turn Up with Emma Adams & Joshua Goodman

We explore the role of friendship in creative collaboration and vice versa with theatre practitioners Emma Adams and Joshua Goodman. Emma is a queer, neurodiverse script writer from Bradford. She’s written plays to be performed in houses, libraries, swimming pools, graveyards and on stages too. Emma has worked with companies including: Leeds Playhouse, Red Ladder, Theatre 503, Paines Plough, Longboat Pictures, Shiny Button & CBBC. 3 of her plays have toured nationally and 2 (Ugly and Animals) are published by Oberon. Emma started Old Bird (a Bradford based theatre company) with Deborah Pakkar-Hull in 2025 and wrote the inaugural show Otherhood which premiered in the Bradford City of Culture 2025 programme. She’s currently writing a new queer musical The Dandy Lions with Josh Goodman and is an Artist in Residence at Bradford Pennine Gateway National Nature Reserve. Her new play, For One or a Hundred Voices, written in response to this residency, will be performed in woodland on Harden Moor and the St Ives, Estate, Bradford, on the 29th and 30th of October 2026. Emma is a core team member of The Writing Squad, mentoring young writers in the north of England.    Joshua Goodman is a multi-award-winning theatre maker, producer, composer, writer and performer whose career has taken him across pretty much every corner of the theatre world. He is currently Executive Producer at London's Park Theatre, where he helps bring an eclectic mix of stories to the stage. Over the past 15 years, he's made theatre in all sorts of places, from major stages to community halls, working across musicals, new writing, experimental performance and projects that put people and their stories centre stage. Joshua originally trained as a composer and can still occasionally be found moonlighting in a recording studio, orchestra pit or behind a piano. His creative work has been described as ‘genuinely euphoric’ (The Guardian) and ‘charmingly perfect’ (KulturFreak). He's particularly drawn to work that is playful, provocative, queer, collaborative and unafraid to get a little messy.   The episode transcript is available on our blog.

Episode 1: Queer as Friends with Tanith and Katie

We decided to launch the Queer as Friends series with a conversation we recorded of just the two of us… partly because it gives a real flavour of us and our friendship and partly to put ourselves under the same spotlight of reflecting on our friendship as we are asking of our guests. Queer as Friends is Coming Soon!

This is the start... Queer as Friends: Brilliant conversations on the beauty of friendship is launching on Tuesday 4th August and do we have some incredible guests lined up for you in the weeks ahead, including Robert Sheehan (Umbrella Academy), Adam Young (The Lord of The Rings, The Rings Of Power), Denise Warner and Donna Solomon Carter (My Lesbian Radio) and James Robert Moore (The Hunger Games on Stage, Shirley Valentine and 2:22 A Ghost Story). Ride or die? Enemies to friends? Fast and firm, or a slow burn? Perhaps you’re friends who lost touch and then rekindled or maybe you maintain a friendship long distance? Whatever your friendship journey, there’s a brilliant story about its beauty waiting to inspire others. Join Dr. Katie Hall and Tanith Ilsley for a new podcast Queer as Friends – brilliant conversations on the beauty of friendship and go deep about the most important relationships you’ll ever have. Best friends of nearly 30 years, Katie and Tan interview pairs of friends for an in-depth look at why their friendships have gone the distance and what we can learn from these often-underestimated relationships and their impact on our lives. With gentle humour and authenticity, Katie and Tan want to get to the bottom of why friendships matter, sometimes more so than romantic or family relationships, and celebrate the variety of forms incredible friendships can take. Queer as Friends opens up conversations about friendship and allyship with people who are part of, or who impact, the queer community in all fields… although when it comes down to it, queer doesn’t have to be your identity, because it’s ours. Without queerness, we don’t think we would have even met! www.queerasfriends.uk @queerasfriends Transcript available on the QaF blog.
