Why Can't I Call My Friends Back?

Mary Kate has seven hours alone — the house is empty, the toddler's at the beach — and she can't make a single phone call. Not because she doesn't love her friends, but because she has zero spoons left for connection. Maya names what's happening: matrescence doesn't just rearrange your schedule — it overhauls your social identity. They talk about what friendship looks like when you're running on fumes, why "for now" is the most important phrase in a new mom's vocabulary, and why the bravest text you can send might end with "please don't respond." Mamas In Session is hosted by Maya Kruger (MA, LCAT, RDT, PMH-C) and Dr. Mary Kate Roohan (Psy.D.). This podcast is for informational purposes and does not substitute for professional mental health care. If something in this episode resonates, please reach out to a licensed provider in your area. You Can't Anxiety Proof Motherhood

Mary Kate hires a baby proofer who once worked for Kylie Jenner — and the estimate comes in at five thousand dollars. For a house that's already mostly baby proofed. Maya has questions. What starts as a very funny story about a man named Bruce and his expert-witness credentials turns into something more honest: you can outsource the baby gates, but you cannot outsource the anxiety underneath them. Also: the boo-boo report, Boomba the Roomba, and a tiny jar situation that escalates. Mamas In Session is a podcast for moms, by moms — who are also therapists. Am I a Sellout for Going on Disney Cruises?

Maya went on a Disney cruise and can't stop apologizing for it — to Mary Kate, to the other school moms, to the crunchy barefoot shaman living inside her head. What starts as vacation guilt turns into a real question: have I lost myself in motherhood, or is this just what the season looks like? Mary Kate brings the dialectic — you can be buying in and selling out at the same time — and Maya brings the Barbie story that explains everything. Clinical concepts: DBT dialectics, cognitive distortions, and holding lightly to the narratives that used to feel like identity. My Eight Year-Old Self Showed at Parent Orientation

Maya goes to parent orientation alone and her eight-year-old self shows up uninvited — the one who moved to a new continent, didn't speak the language, and learned to mime her way through. Mary Kate walks her through ACT defusion and they accidentally build the show's greatest character: a Venice Beach bodybuilder named Rambo in a shiny purple speedo who wants to save the day. Clinical concepts: cognitive defusion, IFS parts work, and a brand-new one they coin live — fast forgiveness. Mamas In Session is a podcast for moms, by moms — who are also therapists. Postpartum Psychosis: What Every Mom Watching the News Needs to Know

Postpartum psychosis is rare — one to two women in a thousand. But right now, it’s everywhere in your feed. Two therapist moms sit down to talk about what it actually is, why it’s so different from every other postpartum mood disorder, and why the fact that you’re scared right now is probably a sign that you’re okay. Mary Kate lost a client to postpartum psychosis early in her career. Maya specializes in perinatal mental health. Neither of them is here to comment on the case — they’re here for the moms who can’t stop watching it. A thought is not a prediction. Mamas In Session is a podcast for moms, by moms — who are also therapists. We’re therapists, but we’re not your therapists. What Kind of Mom Does This?

Preview episode. Co-sleeping, sleep training, and the thing Mary Kate does every night and tells nobody. “I feel so ashamed. What kind of mom does this?” What starts as a sleep problem turns into something more honest about marriage, secrecy, and the moment “my turn” quietly becomes “my job.” Maya plays therapist this time. Nobody gets a tidy fix, and Mary Kate coins a phrase she will never live down. Mamas In Session is a podcast for moms, by moms — who are also therapists. When Maternal Anxiety Starts to Feel Safe

Preview episode. Therapists get process addictions too. Maya’s is anxiety. Mary Kate’s is control — ask her about the solar panel guy. A process addiction is anything compulsive that isn’t a substance, and both hosts have one. They trace theirs back to where the stories actually started, pressure-test whether anxiety is doing something for you, and accidentally name the entire podcast on tape. Becoming a Mother Is Trauma

Preview episode. A kid yells "don’t kill me" at the phlebotomist. Her mom spends the car ride home feeling like a monster. Is matrescence trauma? Mary Kate catches Maya adding "but I’m so grateful" to the end of a genuinely hard week — the gratitude trap, live and on mic. What follows is a real argument about whether the word trauma belongs only to capital-T catastrophe, and where matrescence fits. It lands on a verdict the show now uses as shorthand. Mom Guilt Doesn’t Take Sick Days

Preview episode. Maya gets a sinus infection, cancels on clients twice, then spends a week rubbing her own nose in it. Mom guilt survives a fever. Mary Kate brings the DBT line that ruins her a little: suffering is pain plus non-acceptance. The teaching arrives entirely through a smelly, beret-wearing, mural-painting construction worker named Paul, and lands somewhere quiet — we are very hard on ourselves. I Canceled Daycare Forever and Ever, Amen

Preview episode. Mary Kate’s daycare quietly wasn’t keeping its ratio — and she can’t bring herself to send the break-up text. Gut, or anxiety? Maya turns the therapy chair around and makes her roleplay the confrontation live, naming an invented caregiver mid-scene. What comes out is the difference between intuition and fear when a room full of toddlers is what’s hanging in the balance — plus a pigeon-delivered care basket and a concept called the "gut of gut."
