“The Secret My Mum Kept For 15 Years”

Some stories start with a lie so big it takes 15 years to unravel. Kelly’s mum was stolen as a baby — taken from her Aboriginal family, raised as someone else’s daughter, denied her own name. Generations later, that same theft found its way into Kelly’s life too: a secret kept from her until she was old enough to drive, a mother she lost before she ever really got to know her, and a second marriage that started like a fairy tale and ended with the locks drilled out of her own front door. This is a story about what gets stolen — a childhood, a truth, a sense of safety. And it’s a story about what can’t be taken, because Kelly is still here, still fighting, still refusing to be the one who stays quiet. Note: a couple of sections of this episode have rougher audio quality — thank you for bearing with us through those moments, the story is worth it. ⏱️ TIMESTAMPS 00:00 — Intro: a lie 15 years in the making 01:04 — Welcome, Kelly 01:28 — Finding out her mum was stolen from her Aboriginal family 02:35 — Growing up believing her nan was her mum 04:43 — Reconnecting with her Aboriginal family and culture 08:05 — The Coles car park: the moment the truth came out 10:36 — The DNA test that opened up a lifetime of secrets 11:21 — Piecing together how her mum was taken 12:43 — What she wishes she could ask her mum 17:03 — “We had the same hands, the same feet” — the unbreakable bond 19:12 — Second marriage: when the mask started to slip 20:10 — How it unravelled so fast 25:18 — Leaving, the women’s refuge, and where the system failed her 27:48 — Still standing at 44: where the strength comes from 33:06 — Kelly’s message to camera Still Standing. “The One That Broke Us: A Step-Mother’s Story of Parental Alienation”

She was 12 years old. She said her dad's family "didn't matter." No one asked her why. In Episode 05 of Still Standing. Still Speaking., I sit down with Helen. A step-mother who watched her husband fight for his place in his own children's lives — and became a target for loving him. I'll be honest — this was one of the hardest conversations I've had on this podcast. There were tears on both sides of the mic. Helen's story sits so close to my own that at times I forgot I was supposed to be asking the questions, not just feeling every word of the answers. Helen's stepdaughters were coached to believe their father's new family was something to be ashamed of. What started as a custody arrangement became a campaign — accusations, silence, a video of a child being coached that even a lawyer had never seen before. And through it all, Helen kept showing up. We talk about: — Being accused of "replacing" the girls the moment she fell pregnant — The accusation that turned an entire family silent overnight — A video of a child being coached — and what the lawyer said when she saw it — Why a 12 year old "deciding" isn't a decision at all — Grief with no funeral — grieving someone who is still alive — Why their trauma isn't yours to carry, but you carry it anyway — How social media poisons children against a parent 24/7 — And why some people are just built to keep fighting "You have to realize that this is all part of a bigger play. Their trauma isn't yours to carry." This is why I speak. Not just for me. But for every step-parent, every parent, every child living this in silence. You are not forgotten. You are not alone. The truth always comes out. Always. 📌 SUBSCRIBE so you never miss a story. 🤍 SHARE this with someone who needs to hear it today. 💬 COMMENT below — have you ever had to stand beside someone fighting a system that wasn't built to believe them? “What Nobody Tells You About Being An Autism Carer.”

In Episode 4 of Still Standing. Still Speaking., I sit down with Joline — a mother, carer, and the founder of Help You Cope. For a year, she told no one about her son’s autism diagnosis. Not because she was ashamed of him, but because she was terrified of how he’d be judged. That silence eventually became something bigger — a charity built for every family living the isolation she once knew. 🎙️ This conversation is one of the most honest we’ve had. We talk about: — What “coping” actually looks like on the hardest days — Why carers live in fight-or-flight, constantly — The guilt no parent prepares you for — Why she kept her son’s diagnosis private for a year — and what changed — How Help You Cope was born from her own isolation — Why she’s still standing, for her son and for every parent like her “Carers are in fight or flight mode. Pretty much all the time.” This is why I speak. Not just for me, but for every parent quietly carrying something heavier than anyone around them realises. Out loud, in front of everyone. You are not forgotten. You are not alone. Still standing. “What Every Parent Needs to Know Before Family Court | Ep. 3 with Sandy”

In Episode 03 of Still Standing. Still Speaking., I sit down with Sandy — a family lawyer who didn’t reach out to me as a professional. She reached out as a human who has seen what parental alienation does to families from the inside. For years, she’s sat across from parents living my story — fighting to stay in their children’s lives against a system that doesn’t always make that easy. 🎙️This conversation is the one I wish existed when I needed it most. We talk about: — What parental alienation actually looks like, from a legal perspective — Where the family court system gets it wrong — and where it gets it right — What parents fighting for their kids need to know before they walk into a courtroom — The emotional toll no one prepares you for — Advice for anyone currently in the fight — Why she chose to speak on this, and why it matters “The truth about parental alienation.” This is why I speak. Not just for me. But for every parent who has been shut out of their child’s life and doesn’t know where to turn — out loud, in front of everyone. You are not forgotten. You are not alone. “She was widowed at 44. Left with two boys, a broken heart, and a choice.”

In Episode 02 of Still Standing. Still Speaking., I sit down with Luisa Onorato. A woman I share an unexpected connection with — one that makes this conversation hit different. Luisa's husband catered my daughter's Holy Communion. He catered my third daughter's baby shower. He was there, feeding my family, celebrating with us — before either of us knew what was coming for her. Then he got sick. Then he was gone. We talk about: — Who Luisa was before the world changed — 2015, the first diagnosis — May 10, 2021 — the day life changed forever, the second diagnosis: terminal — The fear of the reality he wasn't coming home, after a trip to the hospital — Becoming both parents to her two boys — how she keeps it together and stays strong for them — Why she chose to share her grief story and heal loudly online — Her advice to anyone going through something similar — it's ok to not be ok, you carry it, you never forget — Why she is still standing "Grief doesn't define you. It reveals you." This is why I speak. Not just for me. But for every woman who has lost someone and doesn't know how to keep going — out loud, in front of everyone. You are not forgotten. You are not alone. Heal loudly. My Video Reunited A Mother With Her Daughter. She Hadn’t Spoken To Her In 12 Months. | Ep. 01

I posted a video about my story. A stranger shared it. And it reunited a mother with her daughter. In Episode 01 of Still Standing. Still Speaking., I sit down with Hannah. A mother who spent 12 months in silence from her own daughter — not by choice, but by force. Hannah’s daughter found the video I posted about my own experience with parental alienation. What she saw in that video challenged everything she had been told about her mother. And she picked up the phone. We talk about: — What 12 months of silence from your own child actually feels like — The phone call Hannah almost didn’t answer — Her daughter’s first words after a year of silence — A 12 year old apologising for things she was manipulated into saying — An electric bike and a dog used to keep a child from her mother — Being served court papers on Mother’s Day — Receiving threats from a bikie member for fighting for her child — Why one video posted about my own story changed another family’s life — And why silence never heals people — but courage does “If that video hadn’t been shared, my daughter may never have seen a perspective that challenged what she’d been told.” This is why I speak. Not just for me. But for every parent, every child, every family living this in silence. You are not forgotten. You are not alone. The truth always comes out.
