My Playful Wife — A Tender Literary Love Story

Some love stories aren't about falling in love — they're about staying, and waking up, and choosing each other again. This is the story of a marriage that comes fully awake, and then quietly widens: two people who open their home to a guarded, passed-over boy and slowly become a family. Tender, warm, and deeply human — an ordinary life told with extraordinary care. A serialized tender literary audiobook about marriage and family, written by Mia. New episodes daily. My Playful Wife — Season 1, Episode 91: The Letter

He asked again on a Thursday, which I should have expected, because I had told this notebook he might ask on a Thursday and the universe has a sense of humour about that kind of thing. It was not in the car this time. It was at the table, over homework, at the exact moment I was carrying plates, which is how ten-year-olds schedule their business. He said, not looking up from a page of fractions, "You said we could look into it." Present tense of a promise made a month ago at forty kilometres an hour. He had been carrying it around all that time, entirely intact, waiting for whatever internal condition he needed to meet before he could spend it — and he had said nothing, and had given no sign, and had been to school and eaten his dinners and argued about Ishaan, and the whole time this... My Playful Wife — Season 1, Episode 90: Room For Both

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! I have been doing arithmetic in my head for a month, and last week my son, who does not know he did it, showed me that I had the wrong operation. I have noticed that the errors which do the most damage in a life are almost never errors of value. They are errors of category. You are not wrong about what matters; you are wrong about what kind of thing it is, and then every conclusion you draw downstream of that is impeccably reasoned and entirely false. I did not love my son incorrectly. I loved him with everything I have. I had simply filed him under the wrong branch of mathematics — and because the filing happened somewhere below language, forty years before I ever met him, it did not once occur to me that it might be audited at all. You do not question your axioms. That is what makes... My Playful Wife is a serialized tender literary audiobook about marriage and family, written by Mia. New episodes daily.

My Playful Wife — Season 1, Episode 89: Where She Is

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! He asked it in the car, which is where he asks the things that matter, because in a car nobody has to look at anybody. "Could we find her? If we wanted. Is that a thing people do?" I had known this was coming for about a year, in the way you know a season is coming, and I had still managed to be entirely unprepared for the fact of it. When Kabir was eight and the grief first came up out of him — the night at the shelf, the photograph in his hands, the four unanswerable questions in the dark — the questions had been the questions of a wound. Why didn't she keep me. Did she not want me. Those are not requests for information. Those are a child bleeding in the only language he has. You do not answer that kind of question; you sit with the person asking it and you refuse to let them ask... My Playful Wife — Season 1, Episode 88: The Two of Us, Still

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! On a Saturday in February, Kabir went to Dada's for the night and Tara's family took him to something on the Sunday, and Saloni and I found ourselves alone in our flat for twenty-six consecutive hours for the first time in two and a half years. I had been looking forward to it for a fortnight with an anticipation I now find slightly embarrassing, the way a man looks forward to a holiday he has not planned. Twenty-six hours. I had done the arithmetic more than once, on more than one evening, with the quiet satisfaction of a miser. And it is worth recording that not once in that entire fortnight of looking forward did I actually ask myself what, precisely, I was looking forward to doing — as though the hours themselves were the thing, as though emptiness were a destination rather than a... My Playful Wife — Season 1, Episode 87: The Closed Door

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! The door to Kabir's room has been open for two years. It is closed now, and has been most evenings for about a month, and I have had to teach myself, in that month, not to knock. I want to explain what that open door used to mean, because otherwise the closed one is just a boy being moody and this is not a story about a boy being moody. When Kabir first came to us he did not close doors. He did not close the bathroom door properly. He did not close his bedroom door at night, would not have it closed, would call out if the wind moved it, because a closed door was a thing that happened between you and the adults, and behind it decisions were made about where you would be sent next. A door was not privacy to him. A door was the sound of your life being discussed without you. So we lived... My Playful Wife — Season 1, Episode 86: The First Time Alone

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! The Sunday came, as Sundays do, whether or not you have finished being ready for them. I had spent the week doing what I imagine every parent does in the days before a thing like this, which is to conduct a long silent negotiation with myself and lose it repeatedly. I had rehearsed the route in my head more times than Kabir had. I had thought, more than once, about quietly withdrawing the permission — about manufacturing some reasonable-sounding reason, a cold coming on, a change in the weather, the vague and unfalsifiable it just doesn't feel like the right week — and I knew every time that I would not do it, because to give a boy that particular yes and then take it back on a pretext would teach him something about me, and about the reliability of adults, that I have spent two years... My Playful Wife — Season 1, Episode 85: The New Line

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! Kabir is ten now. I have to say it plainly at the start of this new book, because the saying of it still catches me somewhere under the ribs: ten, double figures, a whole hand of years on from the frightened seven-year-old who came to us not believing he would be allowed to stay. Two winters have turned since the marigolds. He is longer in the leg and lower in the voice; he has opinions now, real and specific ones, about matters I had not known children held opinions about; and he no longer takes my hand to cross the road unless the road is genuinely bad, and I could not tell you the exact day he stopped, which is how all the important stoppings go — not with an announcement, but with an absence you notice weeks later, and cannot date, and cannot undo. And this last week, they opened... My Playful Wife is a serialized tender literary audiobook about marriage and family, written by Mia. New episodes daily.

My Playful Wife — Season 1, Episode 84: When It Flowers

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! It flowered on a Thursday, in the last cold week of the year, months after Kabir had pressed the seeds into the soil and long after every one of us had privately, quietly, given up on it. "Papa. Papa, come. Look." I came, the way I always come, because I made it the whole business of my life a long time ago to come when that boy calls, and I found him out on the balcony in his school uniform with his bag still on his back, standing over the two clay pots on the sill, and I saw that it had happened at last. Both marigolds had bloomed. Overnight, in the cold, on no schedule but their own and certainly not on mine, the tight green buds that all of us had stopped watching had opened into flowers — gaudy, oversized, an orange so bright it looked faintly rude against the grey Delhi...
