    When You Say “I’m Just,” You’re Disagreeing With God

    Send us Fan Mail I opened this one with a verse you’ve probably heard so many times your brain checks out before I finish reading it. Psalm 139. Fearfully and wonderfully made. The coffee-mug verse. I heard it my entire life and took it as a compliment. Then a few years ago something started bothering me: if we really believe it, why do so many of us introduce ourselves with the word just? I’m just helping. I’m just a mom. I’m just trying to get through today. I know because I did it. For years. And it didn’t go away when things started working. I built a company from my kitchen table, led teams, held titles I never imagined, and I could still find a way to make myself smaller. “I’m just” survives failure. It survives success too. In this episode I tell you about the afternoon on my brown leather couch, the couch that had seen every ugly cry and every hard prayer, when I heard myself say “I’m just trying to figure it out” and finally heard it differently. What if every time I say “I’m just,” I’m not being humble. I’m disagreeing with God. I also talk about why I chased confidence for years and why it was the wrong solution, the second verse that landed differently (Isaiah 43:1), and the shift that changed everything: the opposite of “I’m just” isn’t “look how amazing I am.” The opposite of “I’m just” is “I know whose I am.” If you’ve ever explained away something you built before anyone else got the chance, this one’s for you. Not with our girlfriends, not with our mentors, and sometimes not even at our own kitchen table. In this episode I tell you about the dinner where the whole table went quiet the moment money came up, the conversation Chad and I had before we got married that we still have every quarter, and a confession from the executive's chair: I have negotiated women down off what I was willing to pay them, because I could tell they'd never talked about money with anyone.
