    The Folly of Belly-Button Gazing

No one can live a wise life if he is entranced with the rumblings of his own gut. When we are motivated primarily by our own desires for satisfaction, we miss the good life God has called us to live. By loosing our stingy grip on attention, money, and applause, we can become who God made us to be and lavish encouragement on others. Join Pastor Trey Hildebrandt and Matt McGee in this episode recorded during the summer’s Proverbs series to be equipped and encouraged to see how wise living is reflected in how we treat the people around us.  Episode Chapters Sponsored by Orlando Christian University (0:00 – 0:23) 1. Wise Influences and The “Others-Centered” Life (0:24 – 6:22) 2. Pride vs. Humility (6:23 – 17:11) 3. Hoarding vs. Generosity (17:12 – 26:25) 4. Belittling vs. Encouragement (26:26 – 33:57) 5. Wisdom’s Foundation in Christ (33:58 – 39:24) Featured on the Firstword Podcast Network (39:25 – 39:47) Reflection Questions 1. Who are some people who God has used to shape you into the person you are today? Who has encouraged and equipped you to grow in wisdom and to become more like Jesus? Have you ever thanked them for their influence in your life? 2. What are some ways that pride may subtly creep up in your heart? Are you more inclined toward arrogance or self-pity? Do you selfishly seek credit and validation from others, or do you turn away encouragement or blessings out of self-focused shame? Who could help you become more self-aware to honestly return to the Lord in repentance? 3. How do you instinctively think about and pursue money? What ways might money be imitating God in your life as a counterfeit source of security, identity, satisfaction, or hope?  4. Have you ever received a gift of extraordinary generosity or a word of specific encouragement? How often do you fearlessly give of your temporary time, energy, and resources to be used for God’s eternal Kingdom? How often do you generously use your words to kindly build others up?  5. Why are so many of us reluctant to encourage others? What would change in your community if the believers in your life devoted themselves to noticing each other’s strengths and needs and choosing to speak words of encouragement to one another? Evangelism Is Easier than You Think

Even though we love Jesus, it can be daunting to share the good news about him with the people around us. We worry about what to say, how to answer people’s questions, and whether they will reject the gospel (and us!). But the biblical gospel is simple, reliable, and glorious–and you can share it by telling your personal story of how God rescued you. Our job is not to produce the fruit, it is just to be faithful with the message. Join Pastor Trey Hildebrant and Matt McGee to be equipped and encouraged to learn that evangelism is not as hard as you might think.  Episode Chapters Sponsored by Orlando Christian University (0:00 – 0:23) 1. Passionate for Jesus but Anxious to Evangelize (0:24 – 10:40) 2. Jesus Fulfills the Bible’s Story (10:41 – 16:09) 3. Can We Trust the Bible? (16:10 – 27:37) 4. The Gospel Is Simple, Not Simplistic (27:38 – 34:11) 5. Your Story Is Good News (34:12 – 38:02) 6. God Will Bring the Harvest at the Right Time (38:03 – 50:33) Featured on the Firstword Podcast Network (50:34 – 51:00) Reflection Questions 1. What feelings do you experience when you think about sharing the gospel with someone? Do you feel the same way about telling someone about your favorite sports team, your preferred political candidate, or the accomplishments of your kids? What subtle beliefs about evangelism might your feelings be revealing to you? 2. Can you tell the basic story of the Bible from creation to the fall to redemption in Jesus to hope for restoration? How can you continue growing in your confidence to know and share the story of the Scriptures? 3. What questions do you have about the reliability of the Bible? Who is someone you could go to to ask these questions? 4. How has your understanding of the gospel deepened as you have walked with the Lord? Did you grasp everything you know today when you first became a Christian? 5. If you haven’t already, choose one person in your life who is far from God. Pray for this person every day for a week. Then begin praying that God would send people in this person’s life to lead him or her to Jesus. As you have access to this person, begin developing a deeper relationship with him or her through hospitality and honest conversations. And when the opportunity arises for you to share the good news, do it. Just tell them about who Jesus is, what He has done to set the world right, and how we can trust Him to find true life.  Helpful Scriptures Luke 24:25-27 Matthew 1:1  Matthew 28:18-20  Revelation 12:10-12 Matthew 9:36-38  Show Credits Today’s episode was sponsored and produced by Orlando Christian University on the FirstWord Podcast Network. Gospel Compassion for People Near to Us but Far from God

Jesus is Lord! As Christians, we have good news that our Savior has conquered death so that sinners can be forgiven and join God’s family. But many of our neighbors do not know that there is hope in Christ for them to be rescued and redeemed. Whether you are terrified to evangelize for the first time or discouraged by a lack of fruit from years of faithful evangelism, you know that proclaiming the gospel is hard. But God calls us to participate with Him as he advances His Kingdom in our daily lives and to trust Him with the results. As we boldly love our unbelieving neighbors by becoming their friends and patiently scattering gospel seeds, we join God in His work of saving them from death. Join Pastor Trey Hildebrant and Matt McGee to be equipped and encouraged as you courageously share the gospel with one more person at a time.  Send in your questions about the family for Trey and Matt to answer in their upcoming Q&A episode! What Scriptures can encourage you if you are paralyzed by anxiety, apathy, or exhaustion from evangelizing? What is your role in God’s plan to save your neighbor? 5. Flourishing in God’s Family: Church, Friendship, and Singleness

Today’s Christian culture sometimes excludes people who are unmarried, widowed, or divorced. But God designed the church to be the hub of our community with a special place of honor for those who are single. Just like Jesus and Paul, believers without biological families of their own have a glorious role to play in cultivating the church family–single Christians have greater freedom to share their time, energy, and resources. No matter if one is single for life or single for a season, God designed singleness to be a blessing to everyone in the church. Join Pastor Trey Hildebrant and Matt McGee to be equipped and encouraged as you learn how to participate in your church family and honor singleness as a gift from God.  Episode Chapters Sponsored by Orlando Christian University (0:00 – 0:43) 1. How have they uniquely impacted the world for God’s Kingdom? 4. Read Song of Songs 2:7. What value can you see for single people who desire marriage to wait patiently for love? Guarding the Garden of Marriage

Why is marriage such a big deal in the Bible? God designed marriage to reflect the wonder of his gospel and to be the foundation for building flourishing families in his image. A godly marriage is like a garden: it displays unique, refreshing beauty, but hard work is required to keep it healthy and growing. Because of the Fall, marriages today are overgrown with distractions, sexual sins, and selfishness that threaten to destroy this good gift from our Father. The Scriptures use language of adultery and marriage to describe our relationship with God, so our ultimate hope lies in the true Bridegroom whom we will join at the Wedding Supper of the Lamb.  Whether married or not, we must all fight to treat the marriage bed with honor as the incarnational reflection of Jesus’s love for his people.  Join Pastor Trey Hildebrant and Matt McGee to be equipped and encouraged as you tend, protect, and keep the garden of marriage holy. Fighting for Family in a Broken World

What does it look like to love your family in today’s world? God’s good design for families hasn’t changed since he created humanity in his image (Genesis 1-2). God made us to be fruitful and multiply, to make flourishing families and societies, and to be in healthy relationships with those around us. But because of sin, our families are deeply broken. Today, we are surrounded by distractions and dangers that threaten our children. Even more dangerous than the external obstacles to healthy and holy families is the sin inside our own hearts and stories. No matter how you or your family have been wounded by this broken world, there is hope for forgiveness and healing through Jesus Christ. Join Pastor Trey Hildebrant and Matt McGee to be equipped and encouraged as you prayerfully and practically fight for your family to be holy.
