    What if Your Presence IS the Gift? | AJ Strout

    How often do you actually "show up" for people in need around you? In this episode of If There Is Anything I Can Do, Pam McConnell sits down with AJ Strout, a widow, mother, and business leader whose honest experience with grief sparked a deeper conversation about what it really means to care for someone in their hardest moments.  After losing her husband unexpectedly, AJ found herself navigating life as a single mom with three children, including a child with special needs. In the middle of the shock and exhaustion of grief, she heard words many of us have said with the best intentions: “If there is anything I can do, just let me know.”  But what happens when you don’t even know what you need?  AJ shares her raw and powerful story of loss, the ways people showed up well, and the moments when good intentions didn’t always translate into meaningful support.     What if your need isn’t a burden—but an invitation?  In this episode, Pam McConnell sits down with Kevan Chandler and Eric Wood to talk about friendship, disability, vulnerability, and the surprising ways our needs can bring us closer to one another.  Kevan is a speaker, writer, and founder of We Carry Kevan, a nonprofit reimagining how people with disabilities are supported and included. His book, The Hospitality of Need, challenges us to see our needs not as something to hide, but as opportunities to experience deeper friendship and community.  Kevan and Eric share the story of their remarkable friendship, including the moments when Eric literally carried Kevan and the ways their relationship has taught them about mutuality, vulnerability, and learning to both give and receive.  Together, they explore why asking for help can be so difficult, what keeps us from receiving care, and how we can create communities where people don’t have to carry life alone.

In this episode of If There Is Anything I Can Do, Pam McConnell sits down with Tyler Staton, lead pastor of Bridgetown Church in Portland, Oregon, author, husband, and father of three.  Tyler has walked through incredibly difficult seasons in recent years — the health challenges surrounding the birth of his son Amos and his own two battles with cancer. But through those experiences, he witnessed something powerful: a community of people who loved him by showing up, serving quietly, and meeting needs before he ever had to ask.  Pam and Tyler have an honest conversation about redemptive suffering, the gift of being cared for, and what it means to practice the way of Jesus through service. They explore how suffering can deepen our understanding of God, reveal His presence in unexpected ways, and teach us what it means to receive and extend the compassion of Jesus.  Together, they talk about why hidden acts of love matter, how availability can become one of the greatest expressions of care, and how we can become people who notice, respond, and love others the way Jesus does.

    You’re So Strong… But What If I’m Not? | Leslie Harter-Berg

    What do you say to someone who is grieving when you don’t know what to say?  In this episode, Pam sits down with Leslie Harter-Berg—speaker, writer, founder of Vids for Wids, and author of You’re So Strong: On Grief and Letting Go of My Favorite Compliment. After losing her husband suddenly in 2019, Leslie found herself navigating unimaginable grief while raising her two young sons.  Pam and Leslie talk about the things people say with the best intentions, including “You’re so strong,” “I can’t imagine what you’re going through,” and “If there’s anything I can do, just let me know.” They explore what grieving people actually need, how family and community can show up, and how to offer meaningful support when you don’t know exactly what to do.  Rather than keeping her grief private, Leslie chose to use her story to help others. Through Vids for Wids, her writing, and her honest—and often hilarious—Instagram posts, she has created community for widows and widowers who are learning how to move forward while carrying loss.  You’ll laugh, you may cry, and you’ll walk away encouraged to show up with more courage, compassion, and intention for the people walking through hard seasons.
