Financial Literacy: How to Raise Kids Who Are Good With Money

70% of wealthy families lose their wealth by the second generation. 90% by the third. That’s according to a 20-year study of over 3,000 wealthy families by the Williams Group. The behaviors and habits that lead to this start a lot earlier than most people think. Only 28% of Gen Z and Millennials say they feel fully prepared by their education to make financial decisions, according to a March 2026 survey by Beyond Finance in partnership with Operation HOPE. And while 39 states now require some form of personal finance education in high school, the quality and access varies. The gap gets filled at home. Or it doesn’t get filled at all. Most parents want to raise kids who are good with money. The problem is that most of us weren’t taught this stuff either. We figured it out as adults — sometimes the hard way — and now we’re supposed to pass down something we were never given. That is exactly what this episode is about. In this episode of the Dad Math Podcast, your host Zachary Mineur, CFA, CFP, Chief Investment Officer of Independence Square Advisors is joined by the firm's Marketing Director (and Zach's sister) Chelsea Mineur to talk about the foundations of financial literacy and how to actually raise kids who are good with money. They get into when to start, how to handle allowance without creating entitlement, what to do when your kid blows their money and comes back for more, and what parents can do before their kids leave home. This is Episode 5 of the Dad Math Podcast — the financial playbook for growing, managing, and preserving family wealth. Subscribe for new episodes every month: links.greenbackzach.com
