The Huddle with Goran Lozo

Goran Lozo

The Huddle is a weekly briefing for people who want to be ready: one idea, one assignment, a few minutes. Most people try to arrange their careers so the hard moments don't happen. It rarely works, and it leaves you untrained for the ones that arrive anyway. Each Monday, this show hands you one thing to work on — nerves, conflict, focus, fear, judgment, the conversation you keep postponing — and one piece of work to do before we talk again. Not theory. Repetitions. Goran Lozo spent years protecting politicians and executives. Now he trains them. He is a combat and counterterrorism veteran, a 7th-degree black belt in traditional karate, a World Championship bronze medalist, and has logged more than 5,000 coaching hours with executives, founders, and athletes. He is the creator of the Pressure Performance Protocol™ and the founder of BIZ Consulting USA. New episodes every Monday morning. Listen before your week starts.  For the written version and the weekly assignment, subscribe to the newsletter at goranlozo.com.

Huddle #9: Smart Is Not Wise

Philosophy means love of wisdom, and wisdom is not the same thing as intelligence. One can be smart and a fool at the same time. In this episode, I explain why everyone already lives by a philosophy, whether they examined it themselves or absorbed it by accident, and why I start my clients with Stoicism and its four core virtues: practical wisdom, courage, justice, and temperance. I also tell the story of a former client, a very successful and very busy attorney, who has given unpaid pro bono time to people who cannot afford legal representation for decades, at the cost of revenue for his company and time with his family. This week’s assignment: be intentional instead of reactive. Watch the gap between what you feel and what you do when you are under heavy pressure, when a stranger asks you for money, and when someone cuts you off in traffic. In this episode: Why wisdom and intelligence are not the same thingThe difference between an examined and an unexamined philosophyThe four Stoic virtues, defined plainlyWhy many professionals learned Stoicism from their parents without ever hearing the wordA pro bono story that shows what character looks like when no one is watchingMarcus Aurelius on the obstacle that becomes the wayThe Huddle is a short weekly briefing on being ready for what life and work put in front of you. Huddle #1: Talent Guarantees Nothing

Five things from this week's episode: 1. Talent becomes useless the moment it has to be used under pressure. At twenty-one, I beat a world vice champion in his own city, in overtime, where the first score ends it. He was the more talented fighter. That wasn't the deciding factor. 2. Certainty is built, not issued at birth. When I walked on the mat, I felt it belonged to me and everyone else was an intruder. That came from years of training two and three times a day, not from temperament. 3. Your opponent's ability is outside your control. I never spent a second on how good the other man was. I worked only on what I could control: composure, breathing, body language, timing, distance, execution. 4. Preparation and pressure training are two different things. A director I worked with knew his board material better than anyone in the room — he built the model himself. One unexpected question three minutes in and he lost the thread. He wasn't underprepared. He had never trained for the moment things stop going to plan. 5. This week's assignment: don't avoid tough situations. Walk into them. Then notice your breathing, your composure, your body language, how you speak to your family and colleagues, and how you decide when the going gets hard. When you see how pressure affects you, you'll know where you have the most room to improve.
