The Deal - Charlie Buxton - On his $1.5bn Dealmaking

The Urban Developer's chief executive Adam Di Marco talks to Charlie Buxton, managing director of Melbourne-based Cadence Property Group. Since starting Cadence in 2014 at the ripe old age of 26, Charlie has led over $1.5 billion of deals including $600 million in acquisitions and $872 million of disposals across 36 transactions, achieving an average net equity IRR of over 70 per cent. Now Charlie's embarking on his next mission an investment platform, the Cadence Australian Real Estate Partnership, which is targeting value add real estate opportunities across Australia. Not bad for a bloke who's yet to celebrate his 40th birthday. In this episode we explore Charlie's fascinating journey to date, the structure underpinning his value creation strategies, Cadence's rigorous transaction and disposal process, Charlie's views on the industrial, commercial and retail landscape, and what it's like to grow up in an Australian property dynasty. I've no doubt we're witnessing the start of something big. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The Deal - Michael Grassi - How Podia put its foot on a Byron backpackers and created an iconic hotel-apartment project...

I’m talking with Michael Grassi, development director for Sydney-based property firm, Podia.  We’re exploring Podia’s hotel-apartment development in Byron Bay known as The Bonobo by Raes.  Located on Byron’s iconic Jonson Street, the Podia approach to developing this site is, well, quite unique.  In this episode, Michael and I explore everything from acquiring the former backpackers site during the middle of Covid, dealing with a traditionally-hostile local community, engaging an award-winning design team to procuring a builder during a construction crisis and selling a once-in-a-generation investment opportunity to a sophisticated buyer segment.  This is a really interesting project and an even more interesting conversation.  Hosted on Acast. The Deal - Oscar Ledlin - Ledlin's most ambitious project to date: Springvale Business Park

Adam Di Marco talks with Melbourne-based builder-developer, Oscar Ledlin.  Haven’t heard of Oscar? Well his 23,000 loyal instagram followers certainly have.  Behind his youthful exterior, influencer lifestyle, fast cars and designer clothing is a really serious guy.  Level-headed, self-aware, motivated, ambitious, and above all else, innovative. His Ledlin Group spans both development and construction, and specialises in the creation of business parks and industrial estates in greater Melbourne.  In this episode, we explore his most ambitious project to date: Springvale Business Park.  We go deep on how he acquired the site (and almost ended up in court), how he raised investment capital from privates, how he took the multi-staged project through planning and construction and how he leveraged his social following to genuinely build a business community.  We hope you enjoy my chat with Oscar Ledlin. The Deal - Toby Lewis - Marquette’s extraordinary acquisition in Barangaroo, Sydney.

Adam Di Marco talks with Toby Lewis, managing director of Brisbane-based fund manager Marquette Properties.  In this episode, Toby shares with me the extraordinary story behind Marquette’s acquisition of an $82 million dollar prime retail investment in Barangaroo, Sydney. Why is this extraordinary? Because the whole thing - from being brought the opportunity, undertaking due diligence, raising the capital, securing bank debt and finalising the settlement - happened in less than a month.  Toby even managed to take a surfing holiday in the middle of all of this.  This particular deal is a lesson in two things: the power of good relationships and an attitude of getting it done.  We hope you enjoy.
