    Just Trust the Kids - Joe Blay, That Stressed Teacher Down the Hall

    Joe Blay teaches robotics at Stuyvesant High School — the school he graduated from — and coaches a program that has grown to four teams and about 250 students. No tryouts, and no kid is turned away. Sarah and Joe talk about what that takes: a rookie team for freshmen to be able to make the classic mistakes early, the mentor who answered every text, and a pull-aside at a competition that a student brought up a year later. Joe also walks through the day he overrode his students' plan to make a point: "I totally beefed it." Plus, everything he does after hours that nobody sees, from wrangling administrators to making sure the custodians get fed. His one takeaway for other teachers, especially new ones: find the awesome teachers around you, and lean on them.
