    Giving Back

What does it mean to truly give back to your community? In this episode of Community Matters, Sid Conklin reflects on a lifelong commitment to serving others and the many ways people can make a difference right where they live. From his years in the Missouri State Highway Patrol and public service to his involvement with local churches, youth organizations, charitable events, veterans’ causes, and community organizations, Sid shares how giving back has enriched his own life. Along the way, he has discovered that service is about more than fulfilling a responsibility. It creates relationships, builds understanding, and brings people together around something bigger than themselves. Sid talks about the importance of supporting organizations such as 4-H and FFA, participating in local events, supporting businesses, helping families in need, honoring veterans, and encouraging the next generation to become involved in their communities. Most importantly, Sid reminds us that you don't have to hold public office, belong to a large organization, or have a lot of money to make a difference. Sometimes giving back simply means giving your time, supporting a local cause, encouraging someone, or lending a helping hand. Every contribution matters. In This EpisodeWhy giving back has become such an important part of Sid's lifeThe relationships and friendships that can grow through community serviceSupporting 4-H and FFA and investing in young peopleThe role of churches and civic organizations in strengthening communitiesSupporting charitable causes and families facing difficult circumstancesHonoring veterans and remembering those who servedThe importance of supporting local businesses and community eventsWhy young people should see the value of service firsthandFinding a cause that matters to you and getting involvedWhy the most meaningful service often happens outside our official responsibilities A Challenge for All of UsYou don't have to do something big to make a difference. Find a local organization or cause that matters to you. Volunteer your time. Attend a community event. Support a fundraiser. Encourage someone who is doing good work. Help a neighbor. When people give their time and talents without worrying about who gets the credit, great things can happen. Giving back strengthens more than organizations. It strengthens relationships, builds stronger communities, and reminds us that we're all in this together. Committed to serving others, because together we can be better. Many Hats

In this episode of Community Matters, Sid Conklin takes a personal look back at the many jobs, roles, and experiences that have shaped his life and his approach to public service. From growing up as a farm kid in Audrain County and working on hay crews and at his father’s gas station, to serving in the United States Army and eventually becoming a Missouri State Trooper, Sid has worn a lot of different hats over the years. His career took him through law enforcement, criminal investigations, task force leadership, public safety, the Missouri State Board of Healing Arts, and the Randolph County Coroner’s Office before bringing him to his current role as Randolph County Presiding Commissioner. While those experiences may appear to be a collection of very different careers, Sid sees a common thread running through all of them: service to others. Each chapter taught him something different. The farm taught him a strong work ethic. The Army taught him discipline and teamwork. Law enforcement taught him responsibility and decision-making. Investigative work reinforced the importance of facts, fairness, and accountability. Serving as coroner taught him compassion and gave him a deeper understanding of what families experience during difficult times. And through all of those experiences, Sid says the lessons have continued to build on one another. He also reflects on what he considers his most important roles of all: being a dad to his three sons and a grandfather to his eight grandchildren. Ultimately, Many Hats is a reminder that our lives rarely follow a perfectly mapped-out path. The jobs we take, the people we meet, and the experiences we have can prepare us for opportunities we never expected. And underneath all those different hats, Sid believes there is a simple philosophy worth carrying forward: Do your best. Treat people fairly. Work hard. And leave things a little better than you found them. That, he says, is what public service is all about. In this episode: Growing up on a farm in Audrain CountyLessons learned through hard work and early jobsServing in the United States ArmyA career in law enforcement and public safetyThe many roles Sid held with the Missouri State Highway PatrolInvestigative work and public accountabilityServing as Randolph County CoronerHis current role as Randolph County Presiding CommissionerThe common thread of service throughout his careerThe importance of family and being a dad and grandfatherLessons learned from a lifetime of wearing many different hats Community Matters is a podcast about the issues, opportunities, topics, and people that matter to our communities. The goal is simple: to keep you informed, encourage conversation, and help us better understand the challenges and opportunities we face together.

    The Importance of Economic Development

What does economic development really mean for a community? In this episode of Community Matters, Sid Conklin looks at economic development in Randolph County and why it reaches far beyond recruiting a large company or bringing a new industry to town. A strong local economy starts with the businesses, farmers, manufacturers, entrepreneurs and workers who are already here. Sid discusses the importance of supporting existing businesses, encouraging entrepreneurship, developing a skilled workforce and investing in the infrastructure that allows communities to grow. He also looks at the role of agriculture in Randolph County’s economy and the importance of planning for the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. Economic development takes cooperation. Schools, colleges, employers, local businesses, farmers, manufacturers, chambers of commerce, economic development organizations, local governments and citizens all have a role to play. Ultimately, Sid believes economic development is about more than jobs, tax revenue or attracting new investment. It is about people and creating opportunities for families, young people and businesses to build their futures right here at home. In this episode, Sid discusses: What economic development means at the local levelWhy supporting existing businesses is just as important as recruiting new onesThe connection between workforce development and economic growthThe importance of roads, utilities, broadband, housing and other infrastructureAgriculture’s role in the Randolph County economyThe importance of planning for future opportunitiesWhy economic development requires cooperation across the communityCreating opportunities for young people and families to stay and succeed locallyWhy investing in the community means investing in its future “Economic development isn’t simply about increasing a tax base or adding jobs. Those are important measurements, but at the end of the day, it’s about people.”Community Matters is a podcast about the issues, opportunities, topics and people that matter to our communities. The Tradition of Hunting and Fishing

Hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors are more than recreational activities. For many families, they are traditions that connect generations, create lasting memories, and teach lessons that stay with us for life. In this episode of Community Matters, Sid Conklin reflects on his own experiences fishing with his grandfathers, hunting with his father, and later sharing the outdoors with his sons. With Missouri’s archery season approaching, he explores why it’s so important to introduce young people to these experiences. From learning patience and responsibility to understanding safety, ethics, wildlife, and conservation, outdoor activities offer lessons that extend far beyond the classroom. Sid also highlights the important role hunters, anglers, conservation organizations, and community mentors play in protecting natural resources and passing outdoor traditions to the next generation. You don’t need expensive equipment or a large piece of property to make a difference. Sometimes, all it takes is a fishing pole, a local pond, a walk through the woods, or the willingness to spend time teaching a young person something new. Because years from now, they may not remember exactly what they caught. But they’ll remember who took them. In this episode: The importance of passing outdoor traditions to young peopleMemories of hunting and fishing across generationsLessons in patience, responsibility, and characterTeaching firearm safety, ethics, and respect for wildlifeThe connection between outdoor recreation and conservationOpportunities to introduce young people to natureThe role of mentors and youth outdoor programsWhy traditions survive when one generation takes the time to teach the next. Live Like Dolly

What can Dolly Parton teach us about building stronger communities? Quite a lot. In this episode of Community Matters, Sid Conklin explores Dolly’s commitment to giving back, from the Dollywood Foundation and Imagination Library to her support for families affected by the 2016 wildfires in her home county. But the lesson isn’t about fame or fortune. It’s about remembering where you came from, recognizing what you have to offer, and using your time, talents, and resources to make life better for others. Sid reflects on the many ways people can serve their communities, whether through volunteering, supporting local organizations, mentoring young people, helping a neighbor, or simply being willing to step forward when help is needed. For rural communities especially, strong communities are built through people who care, contribute, and look out for one another. The message is simple: Don’t forget where you came from. Take care of your neighbors. Invest in the next generation. And when you have the opportunity to help, give back. That’s what it means to “Live Like Dolly.” In this episode: Dolly Parton’s example of community investmentThe importance of remembering your rootsGiving back through time, talent, and serviceThe role of volunteers in strong communitiesInvesting in young people and future generationsWhy service is more than a title or positionFinding meaningful ways to make your community better Community Matters is hosted by Sid Conklin and explores the people, issues, opportunities, and ideas that help shape our communities. Investing in Our Youth: The Future of Our Communities

Investing in Our Youth: The Future of Our CommunitiesIn this episode of Community Matters, Sid Conklin talks about one of the most important investments any community can make: investing in its young people. Sid takes a closer look at 4-H and FFA and the lessons these organizations provide far beyond agriculture. Through projects, competitions, leadership opportunities, and hands-on responsibility, young people learn the value of hard work, perseverance, accountability, teamwork, and service. But the impact of 4-H and FFA isn't only about what young people learn. It's also about the adults who invest their time and encouragement along the way. Parents, teachers, advisors, volunteers, agricultural producers, business owners, and community members all have the opportunity to make a lasting difference in a young person's life. Sid also explores the important role the entire community can play in supporting youth. Whether it's attending a livestock show, supporting a fundraiser, volunteering, mentoring, or simply encouraging a young person, small acts of support can have a lasting impact. The young people in our communities today will become tomorrow's farmers, business owners, teachers, first responders, public servants, parents, and community leaders. Some may leave and build their careers elsewhere, while others will stay close to home. Wherever they go, the skills and values they develop today will help shape the communities they touch. The message is simple: when we invest in our youth, we're investing in the future of our entire community. In this episode:Why 4-H and FFA are about much more than agricultureThe importance of responsibility, perseverance, and leadershipHow adult mentors and volunteers can influence young livesWhy communities should actively support their young peopleThe many ways adults can get involvedWhy failure can be an important part of learningWhat leadership really meansThe responsibility we have to leave our communities better for the next generation Community Matters is hosted by Sid Conklin and explores the people, issues, opportunities, and ideas that help shape our communities.
