    The Versions We Keep.

    There is pumpkin bread cooling when this one starts, and a letter on the desk. My first from a listener. I do not read it aloud; it belongs first to the person who sent it. But somewhere around the second reading it occurred to me that the letter is another version of me. Somebody formed an Avery in their mind and wrote to him. He is me. He is not all of me. The first time I learned that another person could keep a different version of someone I loved, I was ten, and it was a small black notebook that did not belong to me. This episode goes back to that notebook, and to a boy on a bicycle who was my best friend in the whole wide world and could also be horrible, and to the thing those two taught me between them: that seeing and loving are not opposites, and that seeing is not ownership either. Also in this one: why people want a bad guy, and why my life keeps wandering out of position for a victim story. The difference between vindication and authorship. Wednesday and Friday, and why I will not let Friday revise Wednesday. The people who become structural, living on in the way I make coffee or notice the quiet person at a table. The question that has followed me most of my life, did it reach you, and what happens when love is given a job. And the sentence I have been turning over all day, which sounds colder than I mean it: I will love you until I don't. Past tense is not an accusation. It is tense.     The Amber Thread.

    I am browning butter when this one starts, which turns out to be the whole point. The same smell has been in a kitchen in Georgia, a rental in Montana, a town in Colorado where the road stops, and now here, at nine thousand feet, where it takes longer because everything does. Four kitchens, twenty years, one smell. That is a map. So this episode follows the map, and it follows it by the water. Georgia, where the water has been going the same direction a long time. Cuxhaven, at the top of Germany, where the tide goes out so far that people walk where the water was, and where a sixteen year old learned the wrong lesson: that absence is temporary and everything comes back if you know the schedule. Twenty-three addresses that came out of believing it. A valley in Montana where the water comes up out of the ground already warm and does not heal anybody. And Frisco, which is not the end of a road. Frisco is where I turned around. Also in this one: why an inn is a dangerous place to be good at your job. What it means to take two cups off the shelf when there is only one person. The difference between a place that is finished and a place that is ready. And the thing the water finally taught me, which is the opposite of what I thought it said. It does not come back. It goes on. There is a recipe, because there always is. My mother's rice krispie treats, with brown butter and two cups of marshmallows held back to the end, and one rule that matters more than the rest of it put together: you do not press them down.     Let Them Have Their Version.

    A Sunday Special, because some essays do not wait for Tuesday. This year has been hard. It has also been extraordinary. I have stopped asking those two things to cancel each other out. In this one: what Still, by Design. taught me about stillness and what Good Little Innkeeper is teaching me about truth. Being so good at meaning that imagination starts impersonating evidence. Why good intentions are not receipts. The exhausting belief that there is always one more sentence that will finally make someone see what you see. And my own version of something people call the Let Them Theory. Mine is not about no longer caring. I care. Probably too much. Mine is: let them have their version. Let them remember it differently. Let them say no. Let them leave. And then do the harder thing. Do not move into it. Their version belongs to them. Your life belongs to you.     The Water Between Places.

    Episode Three. The one that goes back for my grandmother. I meant to tell you about my grandmother and her scones. Every time I tried to get to her, I kept finding water: a hot spring in Montana I went to get sober beside, a river in Colorado that would not stop for anything, and the flat green heat of Georgia, where the watcher in me was born at a kitchen table, listening to women say "remember when." So this is an essay about what survives the leaving. About carrying a recipe across a country without knowing you packed it. About the difference between changing and losing yourself. And at the end, the original: Mema's orange scones, in her own measures, before altitude, before any of this. She had one from a chain, decided she could do better, and did.
