    The Life-Saving Power of Mattering

When People Matter, Patients Benefit Mattering is not simply about feeling appreciated—it is fundamental to safe, compassionate healthcare. When healthcare professionals and students feel valued, included and supported, they are more likely to thrive, remain engaged and provide high-quality care. Conversely, cultures where people feel invisible or unimportant can contribute to stress, burnout, errors and workforce attrition.

    No Mattering, No Learning

Learning is not simply a cognitive process; it is also a social and neurological one. When students feel that they matter—seen, valued and accepted—the brain is better able to engage in attention, memory formation and higher-order thinking. Conversely, experiences of exclusion, threat or invisibility can impair learning by activating stress responses that compete for cognitive resources.

Designed To Belong? How Universities Signal Who Matters

Students begin receiving messages about whether they matter long before meaningful interactions with staff occur. Physical spaces, digital environments, curriculum design, representation, accessibility and institutional practices all communicate who belongs and who is valued. These environmental signals shape students’ sense of belonging, engagement, wellbeing and ultimately their educational success.

    The Heart of the Matter

Anti-mattering describes the painful belief that one is insignificant, invisible or fundamentally unimportant to others. Distinct from loneliness or low self-esteem, anti-mattering has emerged as an important psychological construct linked to depression, distress and disengagement. Understanding and addressing anti-mattering is particularly relevant in higher and healthcare education, where connection and support are essential.

    What's the matter?

Feeling that you matter – that you are seen, valued and significant – is increasingly recognised as a critical factor in student success, wellbeing and retention. In healthcare education, fostering mattering can reduce isolation, improve mental health, strengthen professional identity and ultimately contribute to safer practitioners and better patient outcomes.

    Cinical education is patient safety

Today we explore how professionals champion learning within their teams, organisations, and wider systems — influencing culture, shaping priorities, and ensuring education is valued as essential work. Effective advocacy blends credibility, communication, and a clear sense of educational purpose.

Self‑awareness is central to professional identity formation

Today we explore how clinicians and educators can examine their own values, assumptions, and behaviours, recognising how these shape teaching, role‑modelling, and patient care. Developing reflective insight into who we are — and how we show up — strengthens authenticity, integrity, and educational impact.

    What makes a clinician?

Professional identity formation is shaped not only by experience but by the pedagogical theories that frame how learners grow, reflect, and belong. Today we examine how social learning, constructivism, narrative pedagogy, and communities of practice provide structured ways to understand — and intentionally support — the development of professional identity in healthcare.

Your name badge doesn't tell me much about you

Professional identity formation is the ongoing process of “filling in the blank name badge” as clinicians and healthcare professionals define who they are, what they value, and how they practise. Today we explore how identity is shaped by training, culture, hidden curricula, and the expectations placed upon us as emerging professionals.

Dual identities - clinician & educator

Today we explore how healthcare professionals develop a dual identity that blends clinical expertise with educational practice. This evolving sense of self shapes how we teach, lead, and role‑model, helping us move beyond “doing teaching” toward being an educator within our clinical world.
