Ep 8. What to Expect When You Start Therapy: Red Flags, Boundaries & Family (Therapy Series, Part 3)

You finally found a therapist. You booked the session. And then they ask the question that stops so many of us: "So, what brings you in?" In the final part of our three-part therapy series, I'm walking you through what to expect when you start therapy, from that first intake session (and what to say when you don't know where to start) to the red flags and green flags that tell you whether a therapist is the right fit. We also get into the boundaries between you and your therapist, how family and culture shape the way we see therapy (yes, including "eso es para los locos"), and why it's okay to walk away from a therapist, even when it's because therapy actually worked. I'm also sharing what it felt like when a therapist ended things with me, out of nowhere, over email, and what I want you to know if it ever happens to you. If you're a Latina, first-gen, or a woman of color who's thinking about therapy, just getting started, or wondering if your therapist is the right one, this one's for you. Missed Parts 1 and 2? Go back and listen to how to find the right therapist and the different types of therapy explained. Ep 7. Types of Therapy Explained: CBT, DBT, EMDR & More (Therapy Series, Part 2)

You finally found a therapist you like. You click on her bio… and there it is again. CBT. DBT. EMDR. ACT. What does any of that actually mean? And how are you supposed to know which one is right for you? In Part 2 of our three-part therapy series, I’m breaking down seven of the most common types of therapy. For each one, I cover what it is, how it actually works, what a real session looks like, and who it tends to be a good fit for. From the overthinker who replays one conversation 50,000 times, to the mujer who still hears “calladita te ves más bonita” every time she wants to speak up in a meeting. I’m also sharing my own EMDR story: the comment about my quinceañera dress that stuck with me for years, what my sessions really felt like, and why I’m now planning my wedding. Plus, I walk you through an EFT tapping round you can try on your own. If you’ve been curious about therapy but the acronyms keep stopping you, this one’s for you. After you listen, DM me on Instagram @themujeresofmilestones and tell me: which type of therapy made you go, “Oh… that sounds like me”? Part 3 drops next week: what to expect once you actually start therapy. Resources mentioned in this episode:Haley Hoffman Smith (EFT tapping): haleyhoffmansmith.com This episode is not sponsored. Disclaimer: This episode is a general overview for educational and informational purposes only. It is not medical or mental health advice and is not a substitute for care from a licensed provider. EMDR should only be done with a specially trained therapist. If you’re working through trauma or something heavy, please look for a licensed mental health professional rather than a coach. Every person is different, so talk with a licensed provider about what approach is right for you. #therapy #mentalhealth #latinapodcast #EMDR #CBT

Ep 6. How to Find the Right Therapist: Types, Cost & Where to Look (Therapy Series, Part 1)

Thinking about going to therapy but don't know where to start? You finally decide, "Okay, I'm doing this." You open up Google… and it's a wall of acronyms. LMFT. LCSW. LPC. CBT. EMDR. And suddenly finding a therapist feels harder than the reason you wanted one in the first place. Mujer, deciding to go to therapy is a milestone. And you shouldn't feel overwhelmed before you even book your first call. In Part 1 of this three-part therapy series, I'm breaking down who's actually out there: what each type of mental health provider does, why their niche matters just as much as their license, and the real difference between coaching and therapy. We also get into the part nobody likes to talk about, money, plus where to actually search for someone who fits you. I'm also sharing my own therapy journey: three different seasons of my life, three different providers, found in three completely different ways. If you're a Latina, first-gen, or a woman of color who wants a therapist who actually gets your culture, this one's for you. After you listen, DM me on Instagram @themujeresofmilestones and tell me: which provider feels like the right fit for where you are right now? Or if you've already been to therapy, how did you find your therapist? Part 2 drops next week, where we break down the different types of therapy and what those sessions actually look like. Ep 5. Why Some Jobs Burn You Out: It's Not You, It's a Mismatch

Dealing with job burnout and wondering why some jobs burn you out faster than others? You know the feeling: the Sunday scaries, coming home from work too drained to do anything, and then looking over at the coworker who's somehow thriving with the same workload. It's so easy to start asking, "Is it me? Am I just not good enough for this job?" Mujer, it's not you. It's a mismatch. In this week's episode, I'm sharing what business school taught me about the real causes of burnout at work, and it's not just about how much is on your plate. I also open up about a job I once had that was a total mismatch for me, and why figuring that out wasn't a failure, it was information. If you're a Latina, a woman of color, or a first-gen professional who's been told you're "not a good fit," or you feel stuck, exhausted, and checked out at work, this one's for you. Tune in for the Mismatch Audit: three journal questions to help you name exactly what's burning you out, so you can stop blaming yourself and start seeing it clearly. After you listen, DM me on Instagram @themujeresofmilestones and tell me which mismatch felt loudest for you. Your answers might just shape the next episode. Ep 4. The Real Cost (Financially, Mentally, and Emotionally) of Having a Baby

Motherhood is exciting and scary and takes so much more planning than we expect! There are the thousand-dollar strollers, health insurance deductibles, and a go bag you have no idea what to fill it with. And don’t even get me started on the health of the mother and their partner! It’s a lot, and I’ve been struggling to wrap my head around it all. Which is why I am so excited to introduce you all to my best friend and recent mother, Cristina Sandoval Lazaro!   Cristina has two kids and has been trying her best to prepare me for motherhood in the future while she’s been raising her own family and a pack of baby goats (more on that in the episode). Cristina never sugarcoats anything, and she’s a wealth of information. If you’re planning on having kids any time soon, or at all, this episode is a great one to help you start planning. In this week’s episode, we’re talking about the real cost (financially, mentally, and emotionally) of having a baby. There’s a lot I didn’t know about pregnancy, having the baby, and then raising that baby. I learned a lot from watching Cristina do it all, and I think she’s the best person I could have learned it from. She taught me all about everything from postpartum depression to what to pack in the go bag, and now she’s here to teach all of you too.  Tune in to hear what you definitely need to prepare for as a new mom and what you can leave behind (so it doesn’t stress you out).  Ask Cristina a question here! Ep 3. How to Prepare Mentally, Financially & Culturally to Live Solo as a First-Gen Woman

Every first-gen Latina I know has some kind of moving-out story. For some people, moving out of their family’s home just makes sense. It’s the next logical step into adulthood. But for us, it’s an uphill battle to regain our freedom! Latinas who grew up in very traditional households have a completely different moving-out experience from some of our non-Latina friends. We are expected to stay home until we get married, so it’s also expected to live with the fact that we will miss out on the freedom of living alone. And if we do move out despite these cultural norms, we are treated like we’re betraying the family or being disrespectful.  Despite all the hoops we have to jump through, we do end up finding our own apartments, and our own versions of freedom. But let’s talk about those hoops for a second.  In this week’s episode, we’re talking about how to prepare mentally, financially & culturally to live solo as a first-gen woman. We’re talking about the expected and the unexpected battles for our freedom. I didn’t expect to be overwhelmed with anxiety just because my first apartment was too quiet, but it happened, and it was devastating. There’s so much you don’t know until it happens, so let’s talk about it so that you’re prepared for anything.  Follow The Mujeres of Milestones on: Instagram: @themujeresofmilestones  TikTok: @themujeresofmilestones Apple Podcasts: The Mujeres of Milestones podcast Spotify: The Mujeres of Milestones podcast YouTube: The Mujeres of Milestones podcast Follow Brenda Diaz on: Instagram: @guera1505 LinkedIn: Brenda Diaz Podcast production for this episode was provided by Siembra Podcast Co, an Afro-Latina-owned boutique podcast production and copywriting studio.

Ep 2. What Happens When You Start Making More Money Than Your Parents?

Making more money than your parents is such a Latina, eldest daughter of immigrants thing we didn’t expect to deal feel so guilty about, but it happened anyway. Whether it’s because we have a hard time talking about money in general or it’s the crushing guilt keeping us from saying anything, keeping all these feelings locked up inside of us isn’t going to help anyone.  Because if we don’t address it, all these guilty feelings manifest themselves into weird and sometimes destructive habits. Like it did for me, and as weird as they were, I’m sure that some of you have done them all before.  In this week’s episode, we’re talking about what happens when you start making more money than your parents. It feels weird! You start to feel so guilty, start hiding shopping bags, and are afraid that you can’t relate to your culture if you aren’t suffering. But that couldn’t be further from the truth! So let’s explore why, and what you can do to start feeling better. Tune in to hear all about my struggles with feeling normal about financial freedom and how to start letting go of survival thought patterns that don’t serve you anymore.

Hola hola! Welcome to The Mujeres of Milestones podcast. Thank you so much for giving me a little piece of your day—it truly means the world to me. This podcast has been on my head heart and soul for a really long time because Throughout my career as a social worker and my own journey as a first-gen Latina, I realized we women face so many barriers when reaching for our next milestone—not because we lack drive, but because we were never taught how to rewire our thought patterns and expand our possibilities. Together, we’ll will explore practical tools like journaling, visualization, EFT and Bilateral tapping and look at the deep-seated beliefs, thought patterns, and subconscious stories that shape how we see ourselves, and figure out how to rewire them, so we can confidently step into every milestone ahead. For those who don't know me yet—hola, I'm your host, Brenda Diaz! I’m a first-generation Latina, macro social worker, public servant, and the creator of The Mujeres of Milestones.
